Racine COP House reopens after being destroyed by arson

It has been more than a year since the Thelma Orr Community-Oriented Policing (COP) House in Racine was destroyed by arson. On Wednesday, Nov. 17, the house rose from the ashes. "I worked on the case of the arson that happened here. It just, I think speaks volumes about the endurance this philosophy has," said James Pettis, Community-Oriented Policing Unit.

Wisconsin emergency responders hone skills for farm rescues

Firefighters and EMS personnel regularly train to meet the challenges involved in responding to residential fires and motor vehicle crashes. However, they often encounter new and more difficult challenges when responding to accidents on Wisconsin farms. “I grew up on a farm, and the equipment now is much larger,” said Pittsville Fire Chief Jerry Minor, who’s spent 43 years in the fire service.

Firefighters respond to fire at Gunderson Cleaners in downtown Menasha

Neenah-Menasha Fire Rescue responded to a structure fire Tuesday afternoon at Gunderson Cleaners, 41 Main St. Crews headed to the scene around 1:45 p.m., where Assistant Chief Shane Krueger said they found a fire in a commercial dryer. A investigation showed the fire was caused by a failure within the dryer system.

Wisconsin Rapids Fire Department supports fellow firefighter during his cancer battle

After captain Paul Mattlin with the Stevens Point Fire Department was diagnosed with colon cancer, his department started 'Mattlin Mondays' in honor of him. The Wisconsin Rapids Fire Department soon followed suit. Even though, Wisconsin Rapids Fire Department does not work with Mattlin everyday, their support can be shown in their t-shirts, helmet stickers, and wearing of other custom merchandise brandishing the firefighter's number and name.

South Milwaukee Fire Department investigating house fire that displaced family

The South Milwaukee Fire Department (SMFD) is investigating a house fire that displaced a family. It happened at a house on Sherman Ave around 9:17 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 15. The SMFD arrived at the home to find an attached garage fully engulfed. The fire was extending through the breezeway into the house.

Home a total loss following fire near Blanchardville

A home near Blanchardville is a total loss following a fire Tuesday evening, the Blanchardville Fire Department said Tuesday night. The fire happened at a single-family home on State Highway 78 near Sunnyside Road, Fire Chief Rolly McGowan said. When firefighters got to the scene, the home was fully engulfed in flames.

Young child walks away from Beaver Dam home after seeing police and fire sirens

A three-year-old child has been located after reportedly wandering away from home after seeing lights and sirens. The Beaver Dam Police Dept. posted on Facebook that investigators believe the child was intrigued by the lights and heard the sirens coming from the police cruisers and fire trucks. After starting off that way, the youngster became disoriented and went into an unlocked apartment.

Kaukauna firefighters go to new heights to rescue escaped tropical bird

In addition to helping out Kaukauna residents, firefighters have been know to rescue an occassional cat from a tree or duckling from a storm grate. But over the weekend, it was a bird in a tree that was the focus of the fire department’s rescue efforts. Sunny, a sun conure, or sun parakeet, is a tropical bird and can die from temps under 65 degrees, according to owner Ken Hurst.

Follow Up: Evansville Fire mourning after firefighter dies unexpectedly

The Evansville Community Fire District and Evansville Police are mourning after a firefighter died unexpectedly on Sunday. Christopher Augustin served as a firefighter and Emergency Medical Responder in Evansville starting in 2013. He also served in the Bellville Fire Department. “Firefighter Augustin served honorably until his passing,” Evansville Chief of Police Patrick Reese said in a statement Monday.

Evansville firefighter dies unexpectedly, police department reports

Evansville firefighter and emergency medical responder Christopher Augustin died unexpectedly over the weekend, the police department reported Monday morning. Its statement described Augustin’s death on Sunday as “untimely and unexpected,” adding that “he served honorably until his passing.” Augustin served with the Evansville Community Fire District and Evansville Medical Services since 2013, the statement indicated, noting that prior to him joining those departments, he was previously part of the Bellville Fire Dept.

More Racine employees getting vaccinated, but lowest vaccination rates are still among cops and firefighters

For the past eight weeks, City of Racine employees who are unvaccinated against COVID-19 have been required to be tested weekly for the novel coronavirus. Via an open records request, The Journal Times obtained testing data from the past eight weeks. No individual employee’s vaccination status was included, but the numbers of employees tested weekly by city department was provided.

Sheboygan house fire: 1 injured, 4 displaced

One person sustained minor injuries in a Sheboygan house fire Saturday, Nov. 13. According to the Sheboygan Fire Department, the fire happened near 14th and Union around 12:30 p.m. Upon arrival, firefighters spotted smoke and flames coming from the home's second floor. Two cats and were saved, and paramedics treated one person for minor injuries at the scene.

Green Bay basement fire injures 1, causes $200,000 worth of damages

One person was injured and removed from their home following a basement fire on Saturday morning in Green Bay. According to the Green Bay Metro Fire Department, at around 11:40 a.m., crews responded to a home located in the 500 block Skyline Boulevard for reports of a fire. Upon arrival, crews say saw heavy smoke coming from the front and back of the home.

Improved ambulance services included in Madison's 2022 budget

Madison Common Council approved the 2022 city budget Thursday night, including increased spending to improve ambulance services in the southeast portion of the city. The plan is to hire ten new paramedic positions in the fire department to staff an ambulance at Station 14 in order to decrease response times.

New simulation trailer enhances fire safety training in La Crosse and Holmen

The fire departments of La Crosse and Holmen have a new prevention tool in their arsenal. On Friday, the departments unveiled a state of the art safety simulator for public education campaigns. The 26’ trailer features several different rooms and teaches tactics like how to escape from a bedroom and safety techniques in the kitchen.

One person injured after Langlade County house explosion

A 67-year-old man is injured after a house explosion in Langlade County. The Langlade County Sheriff's Office tells News 9 that emergency crews were called to the house on Kennedy Lane shortly after 11 a.m. They were on scene close to two hours. The exact cause of the explosion is still under investigation, but it's believed to have started in the basement area of the home.

Riverside Fire District in Rothschild now operational

The Riverside Fire District shared between the Village of Rothschild and City of Schofield is now operational with a few finishing touches left for the building. The two municipalities have served central Wisconsin as one, joint fire district since 2017. The new building allows the volunteer firefighters operate in the same space.

Brookfield fire chief named 14th Assembly District First Responder of the Year

Brookfield Fire Chief David Mason has only been on the job for about four months. But in that time, he's already won the First Responder of the Year award for the 14th Assembly District. It's an award he's happy to receive but never expected. "There's no expectation for this kind of recognition," Mason said.

Eau Claire Fire Department warns of T-shirt spam

The Eau Claire Fire Department says a text message received by people across the Chippewa Valley is not from them. The text message says there is a limited edition T-shirt representing the fire department, and encourages people to click the link to make the purchase. Deputy Fire Chief Allyn Bertrang said he first learned about this text around 10:30 Thursday morning.

Truck hauling ammunition catches fire on highway outside of Amherst

As flames reaching as high as 20 feet into the air, firefighters outside of Amherst battled to contain the fire raging inside a semi-trailer that was hauling ammunition among other items. Amherst Fire District Chief Victor Voss recounted that the ammunition was exploding as his teams fought to get the blaze under control.
