early Friday morning. Expected snow totals have decreased for most
areas. A swath of 3 to 6 inches is expected from central to
northeast Wisconsin. Locally higher amounts of 5 to 10 inches are
forecast near Lake Michigan where lake enhancement is expected into
this evening. Even though snow totals are lower than expected over
much of the area, many accidents are occurring due to snow covered
and slippery roads.

A strong clipper system is expected to bring widespread snow to
all of northeast Wisconsin Thursday into Thursday night. Current
indications for timing are that the snow will begin around
daybreak on Thursday over central Wisconsin, spreading to
northeast Wisconsin and the lakeshore by midday Thursday. Snow
will continue through the afternoon and evening, before
diminishing late Thursday night for all but far northeast Wisconsin
and the lakeshore. The snow could fall heavy at times Thursday
afternoon into Thursday evening.
A snowfall that will require shoveling and/or plowing is expected.
This will be the largest widespread snow that has occurred over
the area since last winter. The track of the clipper low could
still change which would alter where the heaviest snow ends up.
Even with this uncertainty where heaviest snow occurs, expect the
Thursday evening commute, and possibly the Friday morning commute
to be impacted.
Stay tuned for later forecasts and statements as details for this
system become more refined within the next 24 to 36 hours. Winter
weather advisories, watches or warnings may be needed.

Conditions are favorable for brief, heavy snow showers through 2
PM this afternoon. These heavy snow showers could result in a
rapid increase in snow intensity, lowered visibility to a half
mile or less, and wind gusts up to 40 mph with blowing and
drifting snow. Any heavy snow showers would last about 15 to 30
minutes and then depart. If driving, be alert for sudden changes
in road conditions and exercise winter driving precautions. Colder
temperatures will follow the snow showers, which could lead to
roads remaining slick tonight.
