Madison Fire Department pushing to educate people on lithium-ion battery safety

The Madison Fire Department says a rise in fires attributed to lithium-ion batteries is a growing cause of concern around the U.S. and is pushing for better education on the devices to try and prevent fires. “A significant increase in the number of fires that’s due to more and more accessibility,” said fire marshal Bill Sullivan.

One dead after fire at Richland County home

One person is dead after a fire fully engulfed a home in Richland County, officials reported Thursday. A neighbor of the home on the 20000 block of Tuckaway Valley Road in Richland Center called officials Wednesday to report the fire, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Office. Responding deputies observed the home was in flames and collapsed.

Public safety professionals come together for training in Green Bay to make schools safer

Special training was held in Green Bay to help make area schools safer. The state's Office of School Safety held threat assessment training at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) Thursday. Police officers, public safety professionals, fire and EMS, school personnel and other community members participated.

USDA Forest Service offers funding through Cohesive Fire Strategy grant program

While it might be hard to imagine with all the snow on the ground, Wisconsin’s busiest time of year for wildfires is growing close. Two thirds of Wisconsin’s wildfires happen in the spring after the snow melts and before things start greening up. In 2021, there were more than 1,000 reported fires that burned roughly 2,500 acres.

Suamico house hit by car a third time; drunk driving suspected

People who live in a home in Suamico escaped without injury after a car crashed into their house late Wednesday night. It was the third time a vehicle crashed into their home. Suamico first responders say an SUV went off the road and struck the home on the 1400-block of Riverside Dr. just before midnight.

Firefighters Respond To Flames At Columbus Health And Rehab

The residents of Columbus Health and Rehab were safely evacuated Wednesday afternoon following a fire. Crews responded at 1:07pm to 825 Western Avenue following a fire alarm and reports from staff at the facility of a light smoke haze. Upon arrival, small flames were seen coming out of the roof near a vent above the generator room.

The Wisconsin Fire and EMS Coalition held a lobby day at the Capitol Wednesday. More than 150 firefighters and EMS providers met with lawmakers to talk about issues hurting their ability to serve their communities. One of their primary focuses was increasing municipal aid so departments have the money they need.

Council member fights to bring Safe Haven Baby Box to Chippewa Falls

Chippewa Falls may become the first city in Wisconsin to have a Safe Haven Baby Box after the city’s public safety committee advanced a proposal to create one. Heather Martell, Chippewa Falls District 5 alderperson for Wards 9, 10 and 10A, introduced the ordinance Tuesday, which was subsequently approved by the committee and heads to the city council for consideration.

Firefighting tool donated to Onalaska Fire Department

A local Masonic lodge made a special donation of a firefighting tool to the Onalaska Fire Department. The Masonic Lodge #214 presented the department with an FST or fire suppression tool. The easily carried and stored box is an aerosol based device designed to fill a space on fire, interrupting the chemical chain reaction of combustion while cooling the area.

Madison woman thwarts cooking fire with the help of home security cameras

A Madison woman had a close call after leaving food on the stove while running an errand Monday afternoon. Madison Fire Department spokesperson Cynthia Schuster said the woman realized she may have left food on the stove after leaving her apartment and used cameras inside to check. When she saw her apartment filling up with smoke, she called 911 for help.

Nokomis firefighter honored for lifetime achievement

A firefighter in Oneida County received a statewide lifetime achievement award. Wayne Kinnally has been a member of the Nokomis Volunteer Fire Department for 45 years. He was fire chief for 23 of those years, from 1993 to 2016. He was also awarded the Nokomis Fire Department’s annual Member of the Year award 5 times.

None injured in duplex fire in La Crosse

La Crosse firefighters responded to a fire at a duplex on Monday. According to a release from the La Crosse Fire Department, crews responded to a call just before 5:30 p.m. at 1617 Jackson Street. Firefighters saw smoke coming from the back of the duplex. Crews put out the fire quickly, and the flames didn't spread to other rooms.

Superior commission OKs policy change to recruit more women firefighters

The Superior Fire Department has struggled to attract women to its ranks. While Superior is slightly above the national average for female firefighters, one retirement would put the department below average, according to Fire Chief Camron Vollbrecht. Fewer than 5% of all career firefighters in 2020 were women, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

4 hospitalized after carbon monoxide leak at Rothschild movie theater

The Riverside and Kronenwetter fire departments were called to Cedar Creek Cinema on Sunday after several people fell ill and passed out after leaving the theater. Riverside Fire District Chief Rob Bowen said the department took the call at about 5:30 p.m. When they got there, they treated five people for suspected carbon monoxide, or CO, poisoning; four of those people then were taken to an area hospital.

Firefighters meet at La Crosse Center for annual convention

More than 200 firefighters converged on La Crosse for the Wisconsin State Firefighters Association's annual convention. The two-day educational convention covered topics such as leadership skills, physical health, honing investigative skills and mental health in first responders and their families. Member of the board of directors for the Wisconsin State Firefighters Association Chris Klahn said talking about mental health has only happened in recent years.

Firefighter, resident injured in Neenah apartment fire

A firefighter and a resident were injured during an apartment fire in Neenah that displaced a dozen people Sunday afternoon. Crews were called to the report of a structure fire around 12:15 p.m. at 2116 Marathon Avenue in Neenah. According to Neenah-Menasha Fire Rescue, firefighters saw a large amount of black smoke coming from the two-story building upon arrival.

Fire extinguished at Fiesta Cancun restaurant in Oconomowoc

Western Lakes Fire District responded to a fire at a well-known restaurant early on Friday. The District was dispatched shortly after 3 a.m. for a fire at Fiesta Cancun, according to WLFD. While responding Oconomowoc Police Department officers arrived on the scene and reported heavy black smoke coming from the rear of the building.

Fatal crash in Fon Du Lac County

The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of Wisconsin State Patrol are working the scene of a jackknifed semi on I-41 south of County Highway N. Shortly after 4 AM the semi lost control and jackknifed and a car that was following the semi was unable to stop and drove under it. Reports from the scene are that the passenger of the vehicle is injured and the driver was trapped in the vehicle.

'Unsolvable, unfair, wicked trade-off': Milwaukee firefighters battle cancer causing substances during every firefight

VIDEO: Firefighters around the world, including right here in Milwaukee, are hoping to extinguish an industry wide threat. Firefighting is classified as a group one carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, meaning the profession could be just as cancerous as tobacco and radon. "Why do we know that, and we don't have solutions," Milwaukee Fire Chief Aaron Lipski said.
