More Wisconsin women look to firefighting as a career

VIDEO: Firefighting is both a physically and mentally demanding profession, and while Wisconsin women have been blazing the trail for others in the industry, some said there is still work to be done. In 2020, women accounted for less than 5% of career firefighters nationwide, according to the latest estimated numbers by the National Fire Protection Association.

Truax Field in Madison First to Eliminate Facility-Based Foam

2 cats die in Lodi house fire that was caused by lightning strike

Two cats died after a lightning strike caused a home fire in Lodi Wednesday morning, according to the Lodi Area Fire Department. A news release said firefighters were called to a home on Chestnut Street at about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. A employee from a bank down the road saw the smoke coming from the home and alerted authorities, according to a Lodi Fire Chief Nate Sievers.

Beaver Dam Fire Department Firefighter/Medic Promoted To Lieutenant

The Beaver Dam Fire Department is highlighting the promotion of one of their own. Firefighter/Medic Josh Coffey has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant. He officially began his new role on Tuesday. Coffey, a native of Georgia, began his fire service career with the Butts County Fire Department. He then served on the Henry County Fire Department in suburban Atlanta before he and his wife moved to Beaver Dam to be closer to family.

Appleton’s Fire Station #1 brings back a little history, receives a replica firefighter bell

VIDEO: The Appleton Fire Department hosted a bell dedication ceremony on Wednesday morning to celebrate Station #1 receiving a new firefighter’s bell. Officials say that throughout history, the life of a firefighter has been closely associated with the ringing of the bell. Holmen Area Fire Department welcomes new chief

The Holmen Area Fire Department swore in its new Fire Chief on Tuesday, April 18. Ryan Ostreng has worked for eight different fire departments in Wisconsin and Minnesota, over his 26 years as a fireman. He previously worked as the Fire Captain and Deputy Director of City Emergency Management at the Rochester Fire Department, for 20 years.

Arson suspect caught, admits to setting wildfires for nearly two decades in Fond du Lac County

The Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Office caught an arson suspect responsible for intentionally igniting wildfires in the area for nearly two decades. Milwaukee Fire Department, Ignite the Spirit partner with Sojourner to raise money for domestic violence survivors

The Milwaukee Fire Department (MFD) is the first to respond to all calls for help in the city. Racine house fire sparked by electrical issue

A fire broke out at a home near Ashland and Olive in Racine on Saturday, April 15. Racine Fire Department was called to a report of a smoke detector activation around 11:30 p.m. Firefighters arrived at the scene and saw fire and smoke coming out of a rear first-floor window. The fire was under control within 10 minutes.

Officials say Arcadia fire 100% contained, fire operations conclude

Significant progress was made by firefighters to contain the Arcadia Fire by Saturday. A statement released by the Fort McCoy Public Affairs Offices says that the fire has been extinguished. Fort McCoy officials had stated on Friday already that the fire burning on its north border was fully contained, with a spokesperson from the DNR clarifying that the Arcadia fire was at 99%.

DNR: Fire north of Fort McCoy burns 3,000 acres, 50% contained

A fire north of Fort McCoy is now 50% contained. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says about 3,000 acres have burned in Monroe County. A vast majority on the Fort McCoy base, only 70 acres were off base. Another 85 structures were threatened by the fire, so a larger area was evacuated.

Green Bay fire forces 6 out of home, causes $60,000 damage

VIDEO: The Green Bay Metro Fire Department says 3 adults and 3 children are out of their home after a fire on the city’s west side overnight Thursday. The fire in the two-story home was reportedly shortly before 4:30 a.m. on the 800-block of Division St. They found the fire burning in the ceiling between the first and second floors.

Former Merrill Fire Chief has his 80 year death solved

After over 80 years later - Merrill's former Fire Chief Aldord Talbot's death is recognized as having been in the line of duty. Talbot died October 7, 1941, originally documented as having happened in the fire house - but unrelated to a call. That's where Merrill Historian Michael Caylor discovered this searching through old funeral home obituaries.

DNR official: Jack Pine fire under control, Fort McCoy fire around 50% contained

A Wisconsin DNR Incident Management Team spokesperson said one wildfire is under control and another is still burning Thursday morning. Mike Hillstrom told 27 News that a fire in Necedah, dubbed the Jack Pine fire, and a fire near Fort McCoy are being fought together as the "Black River Complex." The DNR's Incident Management Team is leading the response to both.

Crews respond to fire in rural Outagamie County

VIDEO/PHOTOS: Crews responded Tuesday night to a fire in rural Outagamie County. Firefighters responded to Cicero Road before 7 o’clock. That’s northeast of Seymour. On the way to the scene, an Action 2 News crew reported being able to see heavy smoke billowing into the air from the highway. The fire appears to be affecting several buildings on farm property.

First responders reflect on Beaver Dam apartment explosion five years later

On a Monday afternoon in early March 2018, an explosion at an apartment building made Beaver Dam — a small city of about 16,000 people in southeast Wisconsin — a hub for local, state and federal agencies. The single casualty of the blast at 109 Knaup Drive was the resident of a second-floor unit who, authorities later discovered, was crafting homemade explosives.

Oshkosh Fire Department, local schools team up to create new playground

The Oshkosh Fire Department announced on Monday that they are teaming up with local schools to create a new playground. In a release, the Oshkosh Fire Department says they are working with Read Elementary School and Fox Valley Technical College to build an innovative public play space that comes with a unique theme.

Onalaska Fire Chief retiring in May

Onalaska Fire Chief Troy Gudie will retire after 34 years, the City of Onalaska announced Monday. Gudie started as a volunteer in 1989 before being hired on full-time in 1993. He eventually served 17 years as the Assistant Chief and was promoted to Fire Chief in 2020. Gudie says two accomplishments that stand out over the years were the implementation of a local high school Fire and EMS Academy with Western Technical College and reaching an agreement to provide fire services for the entire Town of Onalaska.
