‘A team effort:’ West Allis first responders save man’s life after heart attack, crash

Just before midnight in September, Michael Scharf doesn't remember first responders breaking his window, pulling him out or attempting to find a pulse. Scharf, 52, had just suffered a heart attack and West Allis police officers were the first to find him, locked inside of his car that had just crashed.

Madison Mayor rejects budget for ambulance service at new fire station, alder concerned about response times

VIDEO: A new fire station designed to cut down response times may not get a new ambulance. Madison Mayor Paul Soglin rejected a request to provide this service at Fire Station 14 near Stoughton Road. News 3 has been following this story since 2013, when a man died in an apartment fire where it took more than 10 minutes for fire crews to arrive.

America's firefighters honored in Eau Claire ceremony

VIDEO: Thursday, 103 United States firefighters were honored and remembered at a memorial ceremony in Eau Claire. Lieutenant Andrew Dorn, with the Eau Claire Fire Department and Honor Guard says it’s an annual ceremony that started in 1991. He says each firefighter’s name is read aloud and a bell is rung.

Arrest warrant issued for Menasha man in connection with toddler's death in fire

An arrest warrant has been issued for a man accused of neglecting an 18-month-old boy who died of injuries caused by a fire last month. A criminal complaint filed Oct. 5 against Vernon Williams, 29, of Menasha, charges him with neglecting a child causing death. The boy was rescued by firefighters Sept.

Facing a lack of volunteers, White Lake group gives up ambulance service; will rely on Antigo for service

VIDEO: About 40 years ago, Troutland Rescue Squad started shuttling patients from the White Lake area to the hospital in Antigo. Troutland is about to make its last run. It simply can't find enough volunteers to serve as EMTs. This fall, the city of Antigo took over primary responsibility for calls in this part of rural Langlade County.

Seven men, one woman to be honored as Wisconsin firefighters who died in line of duty

They died after suffering the effects of cancer, or a heart attack, or in a collision with a train. Their deaths were as recent as six months ago, and as dated as nearly 90 years ago. 14 treated for carbon monoxide inhalation after Portage business evacuated

Fourteen people were treated Wednesday afternoon at Divine Savior Healthcare for carbon monoxide exposure at Dawn’s Foods, located in Portage’s industrial park on the city’s west side. As of 7 p.m. Wednesday, two of the patients had been discharged, and 12 remained in the emergency room for observation, said Divine Savior spokeswoman Haley Gilman.

Fire truck ride a special experience for Yahara Elementary student

Imagine waking up in the morning and someone tells you one of your wishes is about to come true. For one local Yahara Elementary School student it happened last week. Doug Teitge, a Yahara Elementary student with autism, was woken up by his mother, Renee, on Oct. 3 for school. But unlike any other typical day, Renee announced to Doug that a fire truck would be coming to escort him to school.

Explosion destroys lakefront house in Harrison; two people injured in adjacent home

VIDEO: An explosion destroyed a seasonal lakefront house at W5639 Firelane 12 shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday. Lt. Mark Wiegert of the Calumet County Sheriff's Office said no one was in the home at the time. Two people in an adjacent house were injured. "The injuries right now appear to be minor," Wiegert said.

Construction worker injured after falling off roof when Monroe wooden building partially collapsed

A construction worker may be seriously injured after falling off the roof of a wooden construction building in Monroe, according to the fire chief. Monroe Fire Chief Dan Smits said the building partially collapsed around 2:50 p.m. Tuesday. Officials with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Monroe Police Department are investigating the incident.

Fallen Spring Valley firefighter Terry Shafer honored on national stage

A longtime Spring Valley firefighter was honored at a U.S Fire Service memorial on Sunday. Terry Shafer, Spring Valley's fire chief for 30 years, was among 103 other firefighters who died in duty and were honored at the Emmitsburg, Maryland service at the National Fire Academy. As part of the service, his name was added to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial on the academy's grounds.

Ponkauskas to serve as interim Janesville fire chief

Janesville Deputy Fire Chief Jim Ponkauskas will serve as the department’s interim chief starting in January. The Janesville Police and Fire Commission selected Ponkauskas Oct. 3. Fire Chief Randy Banker will retire in January. Based on the existing shared administrative services agreement with the Janesville, Ponkauskas will, as Banker is doing, serve as interim chief of the Milton and Milton Township Fire Department.

Rhinelander Fire Department spreads breast cancer awareness

VIDEO: The Rhinelander Fire Department plans to wear bright pink shirts all month long to raise breast cancer awareness. The department has worn and sold pink shirts since 2009 for the month of October. Firefighter Adam Johnson said last year the department raised enough to help out four local families affected by breast cancer.

Silo damaged in explosion at Monroe ethanol plant

Officials say an explosion at an ethanol plant in southern Wisconsin caused structural damage, but did not result in any injuries to employees or first responders. Green County Emergency Management Director Tanna McKeon says the explosion occurred in a silo at Badger State Ethanol in Monroe shortly before 6 a.

Oshkosh Fire Department ready to install fire detectors during its annual Detector Trek

2 families displaced by fire at Milwaukee duplex near 12th and Center; firefighter burned

VIDEO: Two families were displaced by fire at a home near 12th and Center in Milwaukee Monday, Oct. 8, according to the American Red Cross. Red Cross officials said the duplex was heavily damaged. Seven people were displaced, and Milwaukee Fire Department officials said one firefighter was burned. He was taken to the hospital, where he was treated and released.

147 Years Later Peshtigo Remembers Fire That Destroyed City

Greenfield: Body found in burning pickup truck

Greenfield Police are looking for answers about a body found inside a burned-out pickup truck. Officers got a call from a neighbor about a vehicle on fire in the 5600-block of Parking Street about 4am Sunday. After firefighters put the fire out, they found a body inside the car. Greenfield Police are not saying who it is, or how they died.

‘Unbelievable:’ Officials work to determine cause of Elm Grove fire so intense it sent 6 firefighters to hospital

VIDEO: Sixteen fire departments and three police departments responded to a fire in Elm Grove on Saturday evening, Oct. 6 that resulted in injuries to six firefighters, who were taken to the hospital, where they were treated and released. The call came in shortly before 6:30 p.m. for the fire at a home on Fairhaven Boulevard near Watertown Plank Road.
