Lake Mills welcomes firefighter recruits, but staffing shortage is far from over

Five new recruits are joining the Lake Mills Fire Department, but the chief says the station is not out of the woods when it comes to a staffing shortage. Fire departments around the nation have struggled to keep men and women on the roster, Chief Todd Yandre said, similar to what other chiefs are reporting.

Fire in Wauwatosa garbage truck; driver acted quickly

PHOTO: Do no put combustible items, hazardous waste, or hot items like fireplace ashes in your garbage. That is the message from the Wauwatosa Fire Department. On Thursday, Feb. 10, a driver for one of the city's garbage trucks smelled smoke – and acted quickly. A Facebook post notes he immediately headed to a safe area to dump the truck.

Fire put out in underground parking garage below downtown apartment complex in Madison

De Pere Fire Rescue describes the importance of its drone

Wednesday afternoon fire departments responded to an ice rescue call on the Fox River near the Highway 172 bridge. After a search, officials said they didn't find any evidence of someone falling through. "Today, [drones] could pick out the ice fishing holes on the ice," De Pere Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Jack Mlnarik said.

Lac du Flambeau home destroyed by fire

Two people had to be rushed to a hospital Tuesday morning after their home caught fire. The fire started before 5 a.m. Tuesday morning at a home on Thunderbird Lane, according to the Lac du Flambeau Tribal Police Department. Everyone inside the home was able to get out safely before an occupant called 911.

La Crosse Firefighter of the Year announced

The La Crosse Fire Department announces their pick for this years' Firefighter of the Year Award. Each year the La Crosse Fire Department selects an individual firefighter that reflects the department and the City of La Crosse in a positive way, on and off duty. Nominations were sent to a committee consisting of the Department Chief and four other firefighters who reviewed and selected the winning candidate.

Door County family loses everything in house fire

After a devastating fire left two Algoma teachers with nothing, two different communities are stepping up to help. Fire destroyed a home in the Door County community of Brussels Tuesday, leaving the family without their pets and belongings. At 2:40 p.m., crews responded to the scene in the area of Pit and Ledge Roads.

12-story building evacuated Downtown due to water leak, Madison Fire Department says

Residents in a 12-story building Downtown were evacuated Monday due to a water leak in an electrical room, the Madison Fire Department said. Firefighters responded to 314 West Dayton St. shortly after noon because of a fire alarm, fire department said. No injuries were reported. The building contains fire department administration and Ovation 309, an apartment complex, the department said.

Pine River man rescued from silo with severe injuries, life flighted to hospital

The Pine River Fire Department said a man was severely injured while performing routine maintenance inside of a silo. The call came in at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, February 7 for a man who was caught in the auger and trapped 30 feet above the ground. Crews on the scene called for a ladder truck from the City of Merrill so they could free the man from the top of the 50-foot silo.

Brown County house fire highlights lack of affordable housing in NE Wisconsin

Valerie Rinehart is still visiting the site of her former home in Greenleaf. “I mean, I’m blessed that everyone is out safe. Thanks to the angels that came and got everyone out,” Rinehart said while staring at burned rubble. On January 22nd around 5:30 p.m. a fire that she says began on the roof destroyed her rental home.

Explosion believed to have started home fire in Wood County

Crews were battling a working house fire in Wood County Monday evening. According to a Town of Rome Fire Department, the fire started after an explosion at a home on Winding Trail in Saratoga at about 6:45 Monday evening. Numerous agencies responded to the fire. The Wood County deputy says the homeowner was not there when the fire started.

Galesville business 'a near total loss' after fire

An early Sunday morning fire destroys a Galesville business. The Galesville Area Fire Department was called at 4:12 a.m. to Jeff's Service off of Highway 53. Chief Lucas Teska immeadiately asked for mutual aid from the Ettrick and Trempealeau Fire Departments. Upon arriving at the scene, he requested additional assistance from other departments.

Cadott Fire & Rescue and the Chippewa Fire District rescued dog after falling through ice

Cadott Fire & Rescue and the Chippewa Fire District performed an ice rescue Saturday morning after a Cadott family's dog broke through ice and was stranded in water. Officials said the dog was rescued on its owner's farm located south of Cadott. They got the call at 9:16 a.m. and the dog was out of the water by 9:45 a.

Attic fire displaces rural Portage family

An attic fire Thursday night displaced a rural Portage family, the city’s fire department said Friday. In a news release, Portage Fire Chief Troy Haase said the fire broke out just after 9 p.m. on Highway 78 southwest of the city. A resident reported smelling smoke and seeing sparks coming from a ceiling fan and noted part of the house was without power.

Dartford Inn damaged in fire

Firefighters worked into the early morning hours responding to an evening fire at The Dartford Inn, the Green Lake County Sheriff's Office said Friday. Emergency responders first received calls about a fire at the Dartford Inn at around 11:42 p.m. Thursday. When responders first arrived, the sheriff's office said a large portion of the building was on fire.

Basement Fire Leaves Fond du Lac Home Uninhabitable

The residents of a Fond du Lac home have been displaced following a basement fire Thursday afternoon. Crews were called to 303 E. 10th St. shortly before 4 p.m. Upon arrival, they found fire in the basement. It was quickly extinguished but left significant damage in the basement and heavy smoke damage throughout the home.

Cooking fire causes extensive damage to Oshkosh duplex, no smoke alarms

Seven people were displaced and some pets died in a fire at an Oshkosh duplex Wednesday. Feb. 2, at 5:24 p.m., firefighters were called to the 1000 block of Greenwood Court. Crews encountered heavy fire in a kitchen and dining room area. The fire caused extensive damage, according to the Oshkosh Fire Department.
