Arcadia community holds celebration of life for former fire chief

VIDEO: Today, community members in Arcadia gathered to celebrate and honor Jeff Halvorsen. Halvorsen was the fire chief of the Arcadia-Glencoe Fire Department before passing away on August 22nd. Halvorsen was a part of the Arcadia-Glencoe Fire Department for over 31 years while serving as chief for over 17.

Tomah Fire Department celebrates 150 years of service

Community members around Tomah gathered to help celebrate the fire departments’ 150 years of serving the community. Fire in Racine that caused an estimated $41,500 in damage 'is under investigation'

A house fire on the 1600 block of Taylor Avenue that caused an estimated $41,500 in damage Friday afternoon “is under investigation,” according to the Racine Fire Department. No serious injuries were reported. According to the Racine Fire Department: Five apparatuses responded to the home, as well as one command car.

Governor appoints former Marshfield firefighter-paramedic as new Wood County coroner

Gov. Tony Evers announced Friday that he has appointed a former Marshfield firefighter-paramedic as the new Wood County coroner. David Patton will take the position left vacant since former Coroner Scott Brehm resigned May 15. Patton has been a deputy coroner in Wood County since March 2020. He has performed death investigations and worked with local police and fire departments, according to the governor's office.

Pedestrian flighted after being hit by car in Muskego

Tess Corners Fire Department responded to a vehicle vs. pedestrian crash shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday near the Muskego High School athletic fields. Off-duty first responders arrived on the scene within seconds following the accident and began to assess and address the injuries the patient sustained.

Mequon swears in three new fire department battalion chiefs

The Mequon Fire Department on Monday swore in its three new battalion chiefs. The command-staff positions are a result of the city’s Future of our Fire Department Committee, which was created in July 2019 to give the Common Council a road map to address both staffing and facilities concerns. The committee was specifically charged with examining ways to optimize the future viability of Mequon’s paid-on-call fire and ambulance services.

Part of downtown Oconomowoc evacuated due to leak of ‘explosive levels’ of natural gas

Main Street near South Street in downtown Oconomowoc was evacuated Thursday morning as a natural gas leak that was centered in Breakshots Huba Huba Bar and Grill, 105 S. Main St., hovered over the area. Western Lakes Fire District Chief Brad Bowen said a business owner had went to open up for the day around 9 a.

Madison launches program to respond to mental health 911 calls

A new program designed to provide alternative emergency response for mental health 911 calls will launch next week. The Madison Fire Department’s Community Alternative Response Emergency Services (CARES) team will begin responding to 911 calls on September 1. In a Thursday morning news conference, city leaders explained how the program will work.

Surprise! Neenah P.D., Howard Fire Department awarded lifesaving equipment

One person found dead in an apartment fire on Madison’s west side

The Madison Fire Department says one person was found dead when firefighters responded to an apartment fire on Madison’s west side. Just after 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, fire crews responded to a fire alarm at Summit Hill Apartments on Mckenna Boulevard. The apartment building has 41 units. Firefighters located the unit where the fire started, and determined it was mostly put out by sprinklers.

Fredonia DPW worker trench rescue, flown to hospital

A Fredonia DPW worker was flown to the hospital with "crush-related injuries" after being rescued from a trench in the village Wednesday, Aug. 25. The man was identified by the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office as Brandon Heinen, 24, of Port Washington. Work was being done to install pipes when the sidewall of the trench collapsed on top of the man, leaving him buried chest high.

Wisconsin hires California law firm to go after PFAS polluters

Wisconsin has chosen a California environmental law firm to help investigate and go after those responsible for PFAS contamination. Coroner confirms death of 'missing' Arcadia-Glencoe fire chief

The body found inside a truck belonging to the Arcadia-Glencoe fire chief has been identified as Jeff Halvorsen. As we've reported, Chief Halvorsen had been missing since Wednesday, according to officials with the Trempealeau County Sheriff's Office. A ruling on the cause of death is pending a toxicology report.

WPS Foundation awards $50,000 to Wisconsin first responders through rewarding responders grant

The WPS Foundation provides its Rewarding Responders Grant annually to help police, fire, and emergency medical services (EMS) agencies purchase lifesaving equipment or important training for their members. Follow-up: Fort Atkinson man captures history and documents 'bravery' of heroes in warehouse fire

PHOTOS: A Fort Atkinson photographer captured history for his hometown during a warehouse fire earlier this month. On August 10, Spencer Jelinek said he saw smoke from his balcony. Instead of running from the fire, he ran toward it. “It was just a split reaction. ‘I need to go do this,’ and I did it,” he said.

Book to commemorate 150th anniversary of Peshtigo Fire launched

Inside the Peshtigo Fire Museum are artifacts of the 1871 fire, which burned 1.5 million acres and took the lives of what is estimated to be between 1,200 and 2,400 people. Now, to commemorate the sesquicentennial, a book called "The Great Fires in Wisconsin of 1871" has been republished in order to educate people about the fire.

1960s Firefighter Helmets Donated To Brookfield Fire Department

PHOTOS: A piece of Brookfield history found its way home to the city's fire department. Firefighter helmets belonging to volunteer firefighter Arthur Berres were dropped off Thursday by two of his grandchildren, Mark Roesch and his sister, Mary Ellen Pankow. Roesch said the family was going through family pictures and found photos of Berres and his wife, Edna (Nachtstein) Berres.

Appleton to Mark 20th Anniversary of 9/11 with Procession, Ceremony

The city of Appleton is commemorating the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks with a procession and ceremony. The procession on Sept. 11 is set to begin at Fire Station No. 1, at the corner of Atlantic and Drew streets, at 8:45 a.m. That is the time when the first plane hit the World Trade Center. The procession then moves south on Drew Street to City Park.

Three injured in Buffalo County crash

Three people were injured in a two-vehicle crash Saturday in Buffalo County, according to authorities. The Buffalo County Sheriff’s Department said Monday that Kylie Barningham, 28, of Pepin was driving east on Hwy. 35 and began to turn north onto Hwy. 25 when she failed to yield to Christina Gbejewoh, 43, Woodbury, Minn.
