Milwaukee firefighters battle fire & frigid wind chills

VIDEO: Milwaukee firefighters battled a huge house fire Thursday morning in the frigid cold. News Chopper 12 captured flames and thick smoke pouring out of the roof of a house near 29th and Townsend streets. Investigators said the fire started on the first floor and quickly spread to the second floor and then up to the attic.

It's getting tougher for volunteer fire departments in Wisconsin to find firefighters

Ryan Krings is a busy man. Not only does he have a full-time job as a firefighter with Neenah-Menasha Fire Rescue, where he works about 56 hours a week, but he's the volunteer chief of the Winneconne-Poygan Fire Department. Though Krings isn't paid as volunteer chief, he works about 20 hours a week there on top of coaching football at the high school.

Ashland Fire Department welcomes new firefighter

Paul Oliver is the newest member of the Ashland Fire Department. Oliver recently graduated from Chippewa Valley Technical College’s fire medic associate degree program and also has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Minnesota. Oliver comes to AFD with five years of experience with the Lake City, Minnesota Fire Department and two years with the United Fire Department and Baldwin Ambulance Service.

11 without a home after Appleton duplex fire causes $300,000 damage

Five adults and six children are without a home after a duplex fire in Appleton late Tuesday morning. The Appleton Fire Department responded to a report of a house fire on the 1600-block of E. Capitol Dr. at 11:30. Video and photos from the scene show damage to a garage separating the two sides of the duplex.

Update: Kenosha apartment fire leaves 3 dead, cause under investigation

A fire at a Kenosha senior-living apartment building left three people dead Monday night, Jan. 17. The fire broke out around 9:30 p.m. Monday at the Saxony Manor Apartments on 22nd Avenue. Neighbors are searching for answers. "I said ‘holy crap’ – there’s flames coming up," neighbor Geri Smith said.

Stevens Point Fire Department warns of oxygen fire dangers

VIDEO: The Stevens Point Fire Department is warning about the dangers of oxygen-related fires, in light of several fires involving smoking. They released an educational video aimed at saving lives and property, saying these types of fires are avoidable. "Everybody still has that one family member or maybe you're a smoker at home, and we're just trying to get out to these people that it's not an if, it's a when or if you're injured or killed if you're smoking with your oxygen on," said Stevens Point Fire Marshal Drew Egan.

Oshkosh Fire Department trains for ice rescues

It has been a busy beginning of the winter for ice rescue crews. The Oshkosh Fire Department says they have to keep their skills sharp to keep people safe. Two dead, five injured in Kenosha apartment fire

Two people are dead and five others have been injured in a fire at a senior apartment complex in Kenosha. Fire Department Battalion Chief Ken Schroeder says the fire started at the Saxony Manor apartments about 9:30 p.m. Monday. Two people died in the fire and five others are hospitalized. Two of the five injured have life-threatening injuries.

Fond Du Lac Fire Rescue spreading warmth to those in need

Fond du Lac Fire Rescue is spreading warmth to those in need… literally. The department has been collecting sleeping bags to hand out every winter since 2016. For the first time this year, the department is also collecting new hats and gloves. “We keep the sleeping bags on all of our rigs so that if one of our crew members see somebody in need then they just give them a sleeping bag,” said Community Risk Reduction Specialist Calie Tasch.

Fire causes $100K+ in damage to home near Stoughton; no injuries reported

Fire crews are investigating what caused a house fire near Stoughton Friday afternoon. The fire was reported around 4:15 p.m. in the 1500 block of Williams Drive, according to Dane County dispatch. Stoughton Fire Chief Joshua Ripp when firefighters got to the scene, they found heavy smoke coming from the back of the home as well as the attic.

Second Mineral Point firefighter killed while responding to crash laid to rest

For the second time in a week, fire trucks from departments across the region lined the streets of Mineral Point on Friday as the community paid its respects to a firefighter killed while responding to a crash on U.S. Highway 151 last week. Capt. Brian Busch, 43, was driving a Mineral Point fire truck that was hit by a semi truck while turning onto an emergency crossover on Highway 151 near mile marker 38 last Thursday.

Beloit man honors 'friend,' former fire chief with hundreds of flags

VIDEO: Driving around Beloit this weekend, you may notice hundreds of American flags lining the streets. Mark Finnegan said there were about 900 banners to cover the processional route for former Beloit Fire Chief Brad Liggett. “We thought, ‘Let’s just line the route like a hall of honor as a salute to him for all he did for so many of us,’” Finnegan said.

Milwaukee Fire Department giving away free smoke alarms

Smoke alarms can save lives. A potentially deadly situation could have been avoided in Milwaukee had there been a smoke alarm in the apartment. On Jan. 8, the Milwaukee Fire Department responded to a call for smoke in an apartment building. There was light smoke and haze in the basement. Everyone evacuated the building except for one apartment.

Oshkosh Fire Department gives safety tips after space heater related fires

Following several space heater related fires in Northeast Wisconsin and other parts of the country, the Oshkosh Fire Department has tips to ensure people warm up safely. The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates portable and stationary heaters are involved in an average of 6,800 fires every year.

Kaukauna fire caused by space heater in bathroom

The Kaukauna Fire Department responded at 1:33 a.m. to a fire at 210 Whitney Street where a single-family residential building was found to have smoke coming from the side of the home and bathroom window. Firefighters entered the home and extinguished the fire in the bathroom. The home occupant reported that he awoke from sleep to find heavy smoke and went to the adjourning house to call 911.

Merrill Fire outfits paramedics with new ballistic vests

Merrill Fire Department recently purchased new ballistic vests for its paramedics to wear on potentially high threat EMS calls, replacing the outdated, hard-to-maintain ballistic vests the department had been using, the Merrill Fire Department announced this week. In addition to active shooter scenarios, paramedics will wear the vests on calls that involve drug overdoses, domestic violence and physical altercations.

Model Market fire: Human remains located amid debris in Kenosha

The Kenosha Fire Department located human remains on Tuesday, Jan. 11 within the debris of the Model Market fire location near 54th Street and 24th Avenue. Investigators had been trying to locate a man who may have been inside the market when the fire occurred last Wednesday, Jan. 5. The Kenosha County Medical Examiner was called to the scene on Tuesday – and has taken custody of the deceased.

Dodge County fire departments merge after staffing shortages

Calling it the first in Dodge County, three fire departments have merged into one, addressing a problem facing many small-town stations. The former Clyman, Lowell and Reeseville Fire Departments are together known as CLR Fire & Rescue. The merger on January 1 finalized the effort that stretched more than five years.

Fallen Mineral Point firefighter laid to rest

One firefighter killed while responding to an incident on January 6 was laid to rest Wednesday with a funeral and fire department procession. There is an empty space that 69-year-old Jim Ludlum left behind at the Mineral Point Fire Department. “This is going to be a long process for them,” Iowa County Emergency Management Director Keith Hurlbert said.

Fire at Stoughton home displaces residents, cause is under investigation

Stoughton Fire crews were called into action for a fire on Tuesday. Crews were sent to the 1000 block of Stoughton Avenue just after 7 p.m. for reports of fire coming from the second floor of a home. All residents had evacuated the house when firefighters arrived and were uninjured. Firefighters later rescued a hamster from the first floor of the home.
