Waukesha fire chief reflects on 9/11 and his 47-year career

When he turned 18, Dan Buchholtz figured it was time to formally take on a firefighting responsibility that pretty much had been part of his life for four years already. There were a few things he hadn't envisioned, of course. That he would become chief of his department 26 years later. That he would serve side by side with his brother, Stu, 60, an assistant chief.

Rep. Plumer recognizes Koepp's 50 years of service with Poynette-Dekorra Fire Department

9/11 memorial events in Northeast Wisconsin, locals honor fallen heroes

In Northeast Wisconsin, there are multiple events popping up to pay tribute to everyone who died during the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 – honoring all of the individuals 20 years later. According to Associated Press, nearly 3,000 people were killed in the 9/11 attacks. 2,750 people were killed at the World Trade Center in New York, 184 died at the Pentagon, and 40 more died in Pennsylvania.

Wisconsin fire departments awarded $1.7 million for training, equipment

Several fire departments in Wisconsin, including a few in the south central region, received more than $1.7 million Friday to fund new training programs and equipment. The grants will go directly to fire departments and EMS groups that are not affiliated with a hospital, explained Rep. Ron Kind (D- La Crosse).

Village of Viola creates flood mitigation plan

Flooding problems are nothing new for Vernon County, but one village is taking steps to lessen the future impacts of the Kickapoo River. In a recent County by County, Alex Loroff describes the effect flooding has had on the village of Viola. The Kickapoo River runs throughout eastern Vernon County, making its way down from Ontario, through La Farge, and eventually flowing into the village of Viola.

Sen. Baldwin talks rural Wisconsin EMS shortage during visit in Mellen

Superior Fire Gives Expert Advice on Fire Safety

With severe dry conditions, practicing fire safety is more crucial now than ever to prevent indoor fires. As of now, there have been 13 indoor/outdoor structure fires in Superior this year. Kitchen fires are the most common indoor fire incidents, but leaving open flames and heat sources unattended is a big reason why fires are going up.

Follow-up: 13 Patients Transferred to Other Hospitals Following Gas Leak at St. Elizabeth in Appleton

Thirteen patients at Ascension St. Elizabeth Campus in Appleton were transferred to other local hospitals Thursday following a chemical gas release. Hazardous materials crews were called to the northwest portion of the hospital at 9 a.m. Appleton Fire was notified to check the air quality. According to the hospital’s statement: Out of an abundance of caution and because the Emergency Department is in close proximity to the affected area, 13 patients were transferred to other local hospitals.

Fond du Lac fire destroys garage, down power lines hinder access to flames

A garage is completely destroyed after a fire, reports Fond du Lac Fire Rescue. According to a release, the department was alerted to a garage on fire near the 100 block of Everett St. around 11:50 a.m. Wednesday. Fire crews say when they arrived the structure was fully engulfed in flames. They note the fire spread to a nearby garage that had limited access due to numerous power lines being down as a result of the fire.

Hazardous materials teams have responded Ascension St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton. “At 9:00 a.m., Ascension St. Elizabeth implemented its emergency response procedures after evidence of a chemical gas release was discovered this morning. We are working with the Appleton Fire Department to manage the situation, which includes supporting the safety of our patients and associates.

Wisconsin Energy Institute at UW-Madison evacuated after lab fire

A lab fire at the Wisconsin Energy Institute at UW-Madison prompted an evacuation on Tuesday. Madison Fire Department crews responded to a fire alarm at around 1:20 p.m., though no smoke or fire could be seen when they arrived. Crews were then told by a building manager that there was an active fire in an autoclave lab room.

Madison first responders to hold blood drive to commemorate 9/11

Madison first responders will host a blood drive on September 11, in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of 9/11. The Red Cross announced Wednesday that Madison Police Department and Madison Fire Department will host the blood drive. They anticipate that they will exceed their one thousandth donation milestone, according to Executive Director for the Southwest Wisconsin Chapter of the American Red Cross Kyle Krieg.

Ozaukee County crash: 84-year-old woman seriously hurt

An 84-year-old woman from North Carolina is in serious condition following a crash on State Highway 33 near Singing Hill Road in the Town of Saukville on Tuesday, Aug. 31. The Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office says the wreck happened shortly after 7 a.m. Tuesday. A car headed east on STH 33 drifted over the center line and struck a westbound truck operated by the Ozaukee County Highway Department, officials say.

Somers, Paris fire departments receive WE Energies grant

The Somers and Paris fire departments are among 27 emergency response agencies that recently received a Rewarding Responders Grant from We Energies. A total of $50,000 was awarded to police, fire and emergency medical service providers across Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The We Energies Foundation provides its Rewarding Responders Grant annually to help emergency response agencies purchase lifesaving equipment or cover the cost of important training for their members.

Poynette-Dekorra Fire Department receives grant for reflective safety vests

The Poynette-Dekorra Fire Department recently announced that it is a recipient of the TC Energy Build Strong grant. Through this grant, the department was able to secure $2,200 in funding to purchase reflective safety vests for its Fire and EMS personnel. First responder visibility is critical in any response with moving traffic, which poses a significant threat to members.

Campbell Fire Department wins FEMA grant

The Town of Campbell Fire Department has been awarded a FEMA grant to purchase new, critical equipment. The Department will use it’s $131,523.81 grant, and some matching funds from the Town of Campbell to purchase Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). “We are very grateful to receive this grant and needed equipment.

Town of Dunn shed fire sends smoke towering over Dane County

A Dane Co. machine shed and classic semi parked inside it are considered total losses after a Monday morning fire that sent heavy smoke towering over Lake Kegonsa. McFarland Fire Dept. Chief told NBC15 News multiple departments spent an hour battling the flames, rotating crews in and out because of the heat, before getting the fire under control.

South Area Fire District holds open house

VIDEO: The South Area Fire District held its annual open house Sunday afternoon at Fire Station 1. People were invited to see the inside of firetrucks. They also got to meet firefighters, paramedics, sheriff officers and even officers with Marathon County SWAT team. The open house also allowed kids to try out the water hoses and other demonstrations from North Central Technical College fire training.
