Area firefighters take traffic management course in Arbor Vitae

On Saturday, the Arbor Vitae Fire/ Rescue Department hosted a traffic management training course for area firefighters. Arbor Vitae firefighter Jeff Biertzer presented the course to a group of thirty men and women. Biertzer says that knowing how to manage traffic in emergencies is becoming an important role for area fire departments, and that partnership between them and police is crucial in clearing a scene.

Pine River Fire Department puts new equipment into service

The Pine River Fire Department today put into service some new gear which will be a critical part in continuing to serve their community. FEMA paid for the majority of the cost for the replacement of the firefighters personal protective gear, a new cascade system, and 12 air packs. The Federal agency also provided for a pack known as an RIT system, which is used to help rescue a firefighter who may be lost or trapped inside of a burning structure.

Madison Fire Department introduces 2 new ladder trucks

Two new ladder trucks have hit Madison's streets. The City of Madison Fire Department added Ladder 2 in December and Ladder 6 this week. Both are 100 feet long, weigh over 39 tons — roughly equivalent to three African elephants — and can reach a speed of 65 mph. Their fire pumps can pump at about 1,500 gallons a minute.

Hometown Heroes hockey game between RWD, Baraboo supports first responders

A local hockey team dedicated their rival game to first responders. RWD High School Hockey held their first ever Hometown Heroes game against Baraboo Thursday. RWD head coach Neil Mattson saw a similar tribute at last year's state hockey tournament and wanted to do the same for first responders in Reedsburg, Wisconsin Dells and Mauston.

Fire destroys building downtown Osceola, home to Red Bird Music Store

Crews with Osceola Fire and Rescue, Dresser, Garfield, Alden and Shafer responded to a fire Wednesday night at Red Bird Music Store downtown Osceola at 211 N. Cascade Street. According to Osceola Fire Chief Paul Elfstrom, he was alerted to the fire at approximately 5:30 p.m. “When I arrived on scene there were two young men standing outside the building,” he said.

Ammonia leak at TNT Crust in Green Bay injures six, 3 taken to hospital

Three people were taken to a hospital during an ammonia leak at a business in Green Bay. At about 1:15 a.m., the Green Bay Metro Fire Department was called to TNT Crust at 508 Elizabeth Street. Crews found a “substantial leak” in the ammonia coolant system, according to the department. Employees were evacuated.

Home expected to be a total loss after fire in Dane County

An home near Oregon is expected to be a total loss after a fire Wednesday afternoon. Dane County dispatchers confirmed the fire was happening at a home off of Oak Hill Road, in Rutland. Crews from three counties responded to the scene around 3:50 p.m. Wednesday. A heavy plume of smoke could be seen coming from the fire just after 5 p.

Madison Fire Department responds to gas leak at East High School

The Madison Fire Department says it was called to East High School Thursday morning for a gas leak while students were briefly held outside of the building as a precaution. Firefighters were called to the school just before 8 a.m. for a report of a natural gas leak. The fire department says a large piece of concrete broke apart during demolition work in the school and hit a gas line in the school’s boiler room, breaking the line.

Update: $25,000 reward offered in firebombing of Madison anti-abortion office

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is now offering up to $25,000 to anyone who has information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of whoever was behind the arson at a Madison anti-abortion group’s executive office, which happened on Mother’s Day last year. Federal agents announced the new reward Thursday, noting the FBI, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the Madison Police Department are still investigating the case.

Packers donating AEDs after Damar Hamlin’s cardiac arrest

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin’s sudden cardiac arrest on the football field two weeks ago has sparked action in the Green Bay Packers organization. It’s teaming up with Bellin Health to purchase and donate automated external defibrillators, or AEDs, to local organizations. New mural in Madison to recognize firefighters' work during pandemic

A permanent thank you to firefighters who have given their all during the pandemic will soon grace the wall of Madison Fire Station 10. That thank you is a mural made by Developing Artists, Murals and Alliances (or DAMA). Veronica Figueroa, Executive Director of DAMA, helped design the mural with input from community members and first responders.

Monroe County: Fort McCoy firefighters hold ice rescue diving training at frozen-over installation lake

One by one, firefighters donned their dry suits and diving equipment and slipped below the ice of Big Sandy Lake on Jan. 11 to practice rescuing a victim during ice rescue training for the Fort McCoy Directorate of Emergency Services Fire Department dive team. Members of fire department’s dive team spent most of the day at the lake practicing various scenarios and honing their ice diving skills as part of an annual requirement to not only refresh skills but also maintain certifications, said Assistant Fire Chief Hunter Young.

2022 marks the busiest year in Wausau Fire Department history

The Wausau Fire Department received 6,686 calls in 2022 which is about 200 calls less than the previous year, but the department is busier than ever. “The Wausau Fire Department in 2022 had the busiest year in history,” said Chief Bob Barteck, Wausau Fire Department. Tomahawk, other crews battle fire at Tripoli BP

PHOTOS: A fire at the Tripoli BP caused significant damage as firefighters from Tomahawk and area fire departments battled the blaze Monday morning. 5 displaced after bathroom exhaust fan causes fire in Sun Prairie townhouse

A neighbor's quick thinking limited the damage to a Sun Prairie townhouse after an attic fire. Sun Prairie Fire & Rescue Company Assistant Chief Bill Sullivan said they responded to a reported fire at a six-unit townhouse on Schiller Street Sunday. The caller explained they could smell smoke but didn't see any smoke or fire in their unit.

Crews respond to vehicle fire in Sparta area

No one is injured after a fire destroyed a vehicle in the Town of Leon. The vehicle caught fire while in the woods, just a mile off Kale road. “The only way to access the fire was with four wheel drive and our all wheel drive engine. Once we finally got to the vehicle it was fully engulfed– the occupants of the vehicle were out in the woods and were going to do some wood cutting,” Sparta Fire Chief Mike Arnold said.

'You never know what you’re going to get into': Madison firefighter reminisces and retires after 29 years

Long-time Madison Fire Department member and leader John Fleming retired after 29 years of service this month. The department said Fleming was inspired to join the profession after watching his father and other family friends enjoy the career. Howard, Suamico Fire Departments receive grant to train high school students

People see firefighters protecting the area all the time, but each got their start in the classroom. Western Technical College in Sparta has several students hoping to graduate and become full-time members of the firefighting profession. The latest recruits say that they chose the career for a variety of reasons.
