Neenah apartment fire sparked by heater plugged into extension cord

Firefighters say improper use of extension cords with a heating device sparked an apartment fire early Wednesday. At about 2:35 a.m., firefighters were called to a two-story apartment building at 1316 Honeysuckle Lane. The first engine arrived to find heavy smoke in the building. They used a ladder to rescue a person from the building.

Follow-up: Merrill fire chief weighs in on Wisconsin's 51 deaths associated with home fires so far this year

More than 50 people have died in house fires so far this year. That’s nearly a dozen more than the year before and part of an upward trend of home fire deaths nationwide. Seeing the statistics of all the people that have died this year after their homes caught fire, one word comes top of mind for Merrill Fire Chief Josh Klug: disappointment.

Superior battalion chief preps for new role

Camron Vollbrecht was on top of a mountain when he got the call he was going to be Superior’s next fire chief. “I was in northwestern Colorado on an elk hunt with some buddies from college,” said Vollbrecht, who currently serves as a battalion chief for the Superior Fire Department. He got the call from outgoing fire chief Scott Gordon.

Fire destroys Amish home in rural Vernon County

An Amish home was destroyed by fire on Monday night. An Amish elder asked News 8 Now not to shoot footage of the fire. We honored their request, which is why you only see footage of firefighters. Genoa-Harmony Fire Chief Mike Hanson said winter weather caused several problems. It took longer than normal for crews to reach the home on Runge Lane because of slick roads.

Neighbors rescue horse from Burnett County lake after it fell through ice

A horse in Wisconsin owes its life to some neighbors who sprang into action when it got into trouble on Sunday. The animal had fallen through ice on a frozen lake, and rescuers had to think fast to get him to safety. At Big Wood Lake, because of the fresh snow, you can’t see the horse’s tracks. But what you can see, all the footprints from the people who came to his rescue and a flat area where the horse was dragged to shore150 yards from where he fell in the ice.

Green Bay firefighters deliver hundreds of gifts for Brown County teenagers in need

Monday was the day the Green Bay Metro Fire Department calls its favorite of the whole year. Firefighters delivered to the Salvation Army nearly 700 gifts for Brown County teenagers in need. The items delivered Monday were collected from the Gifts For Teens parades and shopping days that took place during the last couple weeks.

2 displaced after improperly discarded fireplace ashes cause fire at Madison home

Two people are displaced after improperly discarded coals caused a house fire Sunday morning. Madison Fire Department (MFD) spokesperson Cynthia Schuster reported crews responded to Stevens Street near Grand Avenue just after 10 a.m. for a fire on the back porch of a home. Schuster said firefighters noticed heavy smoke from two blocks away and, upon arrival, saw heavy brown smoke coming from the eaves and flames from a window on one side of the house.

Firefighters successfully extinguish house fire in Cross Plains

PHOTO: The Cross Plains Fire Department said crews were able to successfully extinguish Sunday's house fire. According to the Cross Plains Fire Department, it was extinguished by 5:45 p.m. The Cross Plains Fire Department said several neighboring agencies helped them extinguish the fire. They added that snow and ice made for difficult firefighting conditions.

Two dead in Janesville house fire; cause under investigation

A fire at a home in Janesville killed two people Friday afternoon, city officials said. The fire broke out at a home in the 2300 block of Hawaii Drive just before 1:15 p.m. An initial report said flames were visible and people were trapped inside, according to a news release. When firefighters got to the scene, they found heavy smoke and fire coming from the house.

Labor pains: Wisconsin EMS, fire departments struggle to keep and retain paid-staff, volunteers

Across Wisconsin, fire departments and emergency medical service (EMS) agencies have a people problem — a major people problem. They don’t have enough of them. They are struggling to hire and retain paramedics, firefighters and emergency technicians. The problem is so acute that some volunteer fire and EMS departments don’t have enough personnel to respond to 911 calls.

Town of Shelby pays tribute to a beloved firefighter

The Shelby Fire Department is paying tribute to fellow firefighter Captain Jerry Roesler, who passed away on Dec. 12. Roesler was a 56-year veteran of the department and a beloved member of the Holy Cross Diocesan Center. Past and present firefighters gathered to remember and celebrate his life. According to the fire chief, this means going back to work and honoring Roesler’s dedication to the job.

Portage Fire Chief: 1 hire will slash response times by 40%

Portage's fire chief says the planned hire of another, full-time member of the fire department is expected to slash response time to fires. Chief Troy Haase said the department currently has seven full-time staff and eighteen paid, on-call volunteers. Haase said the volunteers are the backbone of the operation, but he said volunteers must travel from homes or workplaces and the delay of that transit contributes to lengthy response times to get a first engine to a fire scene.

Tomah's Fire Chief asks that residents keep hydrants clear of snow

Tomah's fire chief is asking people to help them out by making sure fire hydrants near their residences are clear of snow. Chief Tim Adler sent a message out Thursday morning asking for the assistance. "...with the recent heavy wet snowfall we received our Fire Hydrants have now be compromised by being buried and hidden from our view which can delay our response, and as the next 24 to 36 hours take place the air temperatures are going to drop into the single digits to below zero which is going to make digging the hydrants out even that more difficult as they will be a frozen block of ice," he said in his message.

Vehicle fire in Pelican spreads to house, fire crews save further damage

Fire crews in northern Wisconsin saved a house from further damage after a vehicle next to a residence was ‘fully’ in flames. The Pine Lake Fire/Rescue shared in a Facebook post that the incident happened on Riverbend Road in the Town of Pelican. Crews were made aware of the incident after a neighbor reported the fire.

VIDEO: Three people are dead after a horrific fiery crash involving a City of Milwaukee Public Works heavy-duty pickup truck in southeast Wisconsin. Dutchess County fire departments brighten spirits of young Wisconsin girl

Four-year-old Delaney Krings of Wisconsin is suffering from terminal brain cancer. Delaney, who turns five on Friday, was unable to participate in her Make-A-Wish trip due to an infection, and people across the country have tried to brighten her spirits for the holidays. Once Delaney’s plight went public, a family friend of theirs made an appeal for people to send the child holiday cards.

Portage Fire Chief expects quicker response times with addition of new fire captain

The Portage City Council approved a new fire captain in the 2023 budget and that person could reduce response times drastically as the department sees a rise in calls. Portage Fire Chief Troy Haase gave his annual report of 2022 on Tuesday night at the city council meeting on Tuesday night. He said with the addition of a new fire captain it could cut the department response time by up to four minutes.

Santa & Madison firefighters spread holiday cheer to patients at American Family Children's Hospital

PHOTOS: Patients at American Family Children's Hospital in Madison got a surprise Tuesday: a drive-by parade featuring Santa and local firefighters. A fleet of fire trucks cruised past the hospital on University Bay Drive. Santa stood atop one of the trucks, waving to kids in the hospital. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, they would actually go into the hospital.
