Wisconsin firefighters killed in line of duty to be honored

Three firefighters with Wisconsin ties who died in the line of duty last year will be honored this weekend as part of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend. Two longtime Mineral Point firefighters, 43-year-old Captain Brian Busch and 69-year-old James Ludlum are among the 144 firefighters from around the country who will be recognized for their service during this weekend's event.

Sheboygan firefighters save person trapped on roof during house fire, 2 injured

Firefighters in Sheboygan helped to rescue a person who was trapped on the roof of a home that was on fire on Tuesday night. According to the Sheboygan Fire Department, crews first received reports of a structure fire just before 10:40 p.m. on May 2. The first crews to arrive at the home in the 1900 block of South 13th Street say they noticed ‘heavy fire’ coming from the second story of the home and one person trapped on the roof.

Onalaska Fire Chief Troy Gudie retires after 34 years

It’s the end of an era for the Onalaska Fire Department. Fire Chief Troy Gudie is turning in his fire helmet for a fishing rod. What do you want to be when you grow up? Most kids will tell you: a firefighter. Smoking materials cause Sheboygan apartment fire

Firefighters responded to a report of fire alarms and smoke filling an apartment building in Sheboygan Tuesday morning. Crews arrived within 4 minutes of the emergency call at 6:20 a.m. and found a fire on a second-floor porch that spread into an apartment and into the walls of the building on the 2300-block of Hillshire Drive.

Sun Prairie Fire Department hosts demonstration of electric fire truck

The Sun Prairie Fire Department hosted the first demonstration of the first fully electric fire truck in North America. First launched in 2021 by the REV Fire Group, the EV REV Vector is able to respond to calls and pump for four hours straight on a single battery charge. The company said in addition to being energy efficient, it also eliminates exhaust and cancer-causing risks for first responders.

Man dead after structure fire in Dunn County

A man is dead after a structure fire in Dunn County Monday. According to a media release from the Dunn County Sheriff’s Office, on May 1, 2023 around 8:19 a.m., authorities received a report of a structure fire at a home on 50th Street, in the Town of Tiffany. The Dunn County Sheriff’s Office, Glenwood City Fire Department, and Boyceville EMS responded to the scene.

Washington County fire suppression tools 'saved property' during house fire

Flames and smoke took over the basement of a house in Washington County, April 24, but from the outside, you'd never know. A special fire suppression tool saved the home. "I got visible flames in the basement," a first responder said. "Looks like it’s filled with smoke." On the morning of April 24, the Washington County Sheriff's Office responded to a house fire in Addison.

Families learn the importance of fire safety, thanks to La Crosse Fire Department

It was all about fun and fire safety Saturday at the La Crosse Children's Museum. Kids checked out firefighters' gear, learn how to make an emergency exit plan and ask questions about fire safety. The La Crosse Fire Department says it's never too early to teach kids to be fire safe. "When you're a new parent, there's some things you have to learn," said Community Risk Reduction Specialist Molly McCormick.

Numerous Brown County agencies respond to kitchen fire at Egg Yolk Cafe, firefighter taken to hospital

Multiple agencies responded to a late-night kitchen fire at a Bellevue restaurant on Friday that sent one firefighter to the hospital for medical reasons. According to the Green Bay Metro Fire Department, crews were called to Egg Yolk Cafe on Monroe Road around 11 p.m. on April 28. When crews arrived fire was visible in the kitchen area and smoke could be seen coming from the roof of the restaurant.

$12.5 million donation will fund brain trauma program for Wisconsin veterans, first responders

Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin will launch a $12.5 million program to treat mental and physical brain trauma in military veterans and first responders, the first of its kind in the Midwest. The BRAVE Program, or Building Resilience through Action in Veterans and First Responders, will provide patients with a one-stop shop for the treatment of what are often invisible, yet pervasive, mental wounds.

Superior Fire Department Takes Advantage Of Abandoned Building For Training

VIDEO: The dangers of firefighting are very real, and that means dozens of hours of training every year. On Wednesday, Superior firefighters got an opportunity to get the best type of training possible by using an abandoned building. Superior fire officials said these opportunities don’t open up often, but when they do, they reschedule whatever they are doing to get firefighters together to really hone their search and rescue skills — while building a stronger bond under tough circumstances.

Kronenwetter Fire Department to celebrate first ladder truck with Push-In ceremony

The Village of Kronenwetter Fire Department will celebrate its newest acquisition with a traditional “push-in” ceremony on Monday, May 1 at 7 p.m. at the Kronenwetter Fire Department at 1582 Kronenwetter Dr. Ladder Truck 1 joined the Kronenwetter fleet back in January. The $1.3 million purchase was approved by the Village Board last year using $400 thousand in American Relief Plan Act funds and $200 thousand from the equipment fund.

Kenosha: Driver pulled to safety after moving minivan erupts in flames, leaves trail of fire

VIDEO: A flat tire sparked a fire that engulfed a moving minivan in Wisconsin on Tuesday night and left a trail of flames as officers raced to pull the driver to safety, authorities said. Officers spotted the minivan just after 9 p.m. driving with a flat tire, the Kenosha Police Department said. After seeing sparks flying from the tire, officers tried to pull the vehicle over.

Woman and dog OK following Oneida County water rescue

The Pine Lake Fire Department said a dog and a woman are safe following an ice rescue north of Rhinelander on Tuesday afternoon. Crews responded to Mohawk Shores Road around 3:30 p.m. for the report of a dog that had broken through the ice. When crews arrived they found a woman who was attempting to rescue a dog also in the water.

5 years after explosion and fire, Superior refinery restarts

On April 26, 2018, an explosion and fire rocked the Husky Energy refinery in Superior. And after five years of reconstruction, the facility is beginning to reopen. "We have commenced restart of the refinery and introduced crude in late March," said Doreen Cole, senior vice president of downstream manufacturing at Cenovus, which now owns the refinery.

Interview: New Green Bay Metro fire chief fights cancer in his department

Firefighting is a dangerous profession, but sometimes the danger isn’t as visible as smoke and flames. The Green Bay Metro Fire Department is screening firefighters for cancer. Participation is voluntary, but a five-year study released a decade ago found firefighters had a 9% higher rate of cancer and 14% higher rate of cancer-related deaths compared to the general population.

'Getcha' head in the game': Racine police and fire departments face off on the court

While usually fighting it, this time around these public servants brought the heat. The Racine Police Department and Racine Fire Department met Saturday at the Horlick High School Fieldhouse, 2119 Rapids Drive, for their first “Guns and Hoses” basketball game. The game was a private event for families of the police officers and firefighters.

Beaver Dam Fire Department reports busiest week in department's history

The Beaver Dam Fire Department had the busiest week in its 155 year history earlier this month, officials announced. Between April 9 and April 16, crews responded to 92 calls for service at an average of over 13 calls per day, officials said Sunday. The department is on track to respond to over 3,000 calls this year.
