Forestry staff presented program informing property owners how to be ‘firewise’

Spring is the season for wildflowers and wildfires. As Wisconsin’s winter-weary residents celebrate the warmer weather, the lack of snow cover and still-dry vegetation creates prime conditions for wildfires to start and spread. To educate homeowners to be “firewise” and take steps to reduce property damage from wildfires, Department of Natural Resources forestry team leader Eric Zenz of the Black River Falls Service Center and DNR forestry specialist Amy Luebke.

Woman injured, pinned by heavy cabinet at work, Madison fire officials say

Firefighters helped a woman who was trapped under a heavy piece of furniture at work in downtown Madison Tuesday afternoon. The Madison Fire Department said an employee at a business in the 300 block of East Wilson Street was rearranging files alone in a locked room when the top drawer of the file cabinet caused it to become top-heavy and tip over.

Mauston Fire Department has busy Sunday

It was a busy Sunday for the Mauston Fire Department as the volunteer service responded to three calls on March 12, including a house fire. A fire reported at W3728 Partridge Lane totaled the second story of a home owned by Keyslyna Iwanska. The first floor suffered heavy smoke and water damage. Mauston Fire Chief Kim Hale said Iwanska and a pet escaped the fire without any injuries and some possessions were recovered.

Fire in Portage home claims several pets

The Portage Fire Department put out a house fire on Hamilton Street on Tuesday afternoon, responding with the benefit of some great fortune, and at the same time, not quite enough. “I was heading to work and I drove by the house and something didn’t look right,” said department Capt. Robert Wood, who happened by 826 Hamilton St.

After 47 years, Kenosha firefighter still burns for hockey

House Captain Daniel Radandt, 55, of Station 7 of the Kenosha Fire Department, has been a hockey goalie for more than 40 years. He learned the sport as a child and continues to play competitive hockey in Kenosha. Q. How did you get into hockey? A. It was at age 8. My dad made a rink on a pond. We used to live on KR and Highway 31.

Police investigate fatal house fire in Princeton

Authorities are still trying to identify a person who died early Monday morning in what they call a suspicious house fire in Green Lake County. The Princeton Fire and Police departments, along with the Green Lake County Sheriff's Office, responded to a report of a house fire at 12:50 a.m. Monday in the 100 block of South Farmer Street in Princeton, according to a police department news release.

Outdoor burning suspected as cause of fire at rural Milton home

A rural Milton home is a total loss after a fire Sunday afternoon, Milton Fire Chief Chris Lukas said. Homeowner Walter Isaacson at 3:50 p.m. Sunday reported the fire at 7207 E. Bowers Lake Road to the Rock County Communications Center, Lukas said. Isaacson and his wife were out of the house when firefighters arrived, but two of the family cats still had not been found, Lukas said.

Police investigate if Baraboo arson suspect is tied to other fires

VIDEO: Baraboo police have arrested 42-year-old Timothy Larsen on arson charges in connection to a house fire on Sept. 2 in the 500 block of 6th Avenue. A family had recently moved out, so the home was vacant at the time of the fire. When police officers arrived on the scene of the fire, they didn’t have to go far to find the man who would eventually become their suspect.

Merrill Fire Department gets new brush truck

When firefighters head to a fire, they need to park the red truck before it can spray water. Merrill Fire Department's newest truck can drive and fight fire at the same time. The fire department's new brush truck will be in service soon. It has been 20 years since they've had a new one. Firefighters can fight brush fires using a joystick system, much like the ones used for video games.

Shullsburg Chief suspends use of fire trucks for basketball team escorts after complaints

VIDEO: Noise complaints after the Shullsburg boys basketball team was escorted into the city after making it into the state basketball tournament are prompting the Shullsburg Fire Department to suspend the use of fire trucks for such purposes. The team was escorted back into Shullsburg after advancing to the state semifinals.

Tomah apartment fire displaces 36 residents

Thirty-six people were displaced after an early Saturday morning fire damaged an apartment unit in Tomah. Tomah Fire Chief Tim Adler said everyone was safely evacuated from the fire that caused severe damage to the 16-unit apartment on Murdock Street. Adler said 41 firefighters from Tomah, the Oakdale Fire Department and Fort McCoy battled the fire.

Two Blair-Preston firefighters being honored for heroic actions

Town of Oneida barn fire kills several cattle

VIDEO: A farm family is looking for answers after fire tore through one of their dairy barns Saturday night, killing several animals. No people were injured in the blaze, but that barn is considered a total loss. The Sprangers Family Dairy is located in the Town of Oneida, near the intersection of Bain Road and McCabe Road.

Car collides with Randolph fire truck on way to fire

A Randolph Fire Department truck was struck by a Ford Fiesta Friday morning while the truck was responding to a fire on Highway 33. The collision took place at the intersection of Pleasant Road and Highway P. Randolph fire chief Bruce Miller said neither of the firefighters in the truck was injured. “The driver of the vehicle was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,” Miller said.

Flight for Life Called after Person Falls Off Glenbeulah Fire Truck

Flight for Life was called to the Glenbeulah Fire Department in Sheboygan County Wednesday evening. According to the fire chief someone fell off a truck at the fire department. It is unknown if that person is a firefighter and the current condition of the person is unknown.

McFarland firefighters climb to tackle lung disease

Five members of the McFarland Fire Department are preparing to climb more than 1,000 stairs while wearing full turnout gear. The quintet will walk up the stairs at the U.S. Bank Building in Milwaukee on March 18 as part of the Fight for Air Climb to raise funds and awareness for the American Lung Association.

Larger fire station may be in Wheatland’s future

The need for a larger fire station in Wheatland was discussed at the Town Board meeting Monday in an effort to begin long-range facility planning. “We have outgrown the existing building,” Fire Chief Lou Denko said. Denko said the station houses five trucks and the all-terrain vehicle used to fight grass fires.

Earliest documented tornado to hit La Crosse County caused damage Monday

The National Weather Service has confirmed a tornado hit La Crosse County Monday night, the earliest recorded instance of a tornado in western Wisconsin. The F-1 twister, with winds of 100 to 110 mph, touched down near Barre Mills about 8:45 p.m. and traveled about 3 miles to the northeast, lifting up south of West Salem, according to the Weather Service.

South Shore Fire Department crews battle fire at Affordable Tree Care

Crews spent hours Wednesday battling a fire that started in a wood pile at Affordable Tree Care, 3201 Highway H. The fire, which was reported about 12:30 p.m., spread from the wood pile onto parkland and up to the railroad tracks, said Mark Pierce, South Shore Fire Department division chief. A box alarm was called, bringing in additional crews from Racine, Kenosha and Milwaukee counties.
