Kenosha alderman pushes for open burning in city

Kenosha aldermen are working to make open burning legal in city limits, despite strong opposition from the fire chief. An ordinance sponsored by Ald. Dan Prozanski would allow open burning under certain conditions. Prozanski, who represents District 14, said his constituents want the freedom to use outdoor fire pits and fireplaces on their property.

Fire crews rescue tubers from river in Eau Claire

Two people tubing Wednesday afternoon on the Chippewa River were rescued by Eau Claire firefighters. The Fire Department was called at 12:25 p.m. on a report of two people in distress on flotation devices. Firefighters located the two people about 30 feet off the riverbank near UW-Eau Claire. Fire crews used throw ropes to bring the people to shore.

Superior Fire department training 'makes us all safer'

The Superior Fire Department's efforts to equip middle school students with lifesaving skills earned state recognition Monday. Over the last four years, the Emergency Medical Services for Children Pediatric Champion of the Year Award has recognized a crew that responded to an emergency call involving children.

Bristol sets stage for joint fire study

The first of what could be five Kenosha County communities has approved a cooperative agreement to study possible consolidation of fire and rescue services. The Bristol Village Board Monday approved its participation in a study of whether sharing services or consolidating departments could improve efficiency, provide a higher level of service and save money.

Fire in Mt. Horeb could be caused by lightning

A house fire in Mt. Horeb on Tuesday morning might have been started by lightning, according to Mt. Horeb police. Firefighters were called to 511 Birchwood Trail on a report of a possible lightning strike. Firefighters from Verona, Black Earth and Barneveld were also called to the scene. Police said everyone got out of the home safely.

Suring bar a total loss after overnight fire

Cambria volunteer firefighters recount deadly Didion corn mill explosion

VIDEO: The small town of Cambria has an all-volunteer fire department and thought the 23 firefighters work full-time jobs they are on call 24 hours a day for emergencies, including the night of the deadly explosion at the Didion Milling plant. On May 31, the emergency call about the explosion at the plant woke the volunteer firefighters out of bed.

Downed power lines caused tree/deck blaze on West Side, Madison Fire says

A tree coming down in a Near West Side neighborhood on Saturday fell onto power lines, with the subsequent arcing causing damage to multiple trees and a wooden deck. The fire happened at about 4:15 p.m. in the 3900 block of Plymouth Circle, the Madison Fire Department said. Firefighters saw a moderate amount of smoke approaching the residence, with two firefighters bringing water lines around the back of the house and two more assessing the downed wires.

Sculpture to have home in Chippewa Falls Fire Station

For years, Jerry Jacobson has been taking the self-guided sculpture tour in Eau Claire. But it wasn’t until this year that the Northwestern Bank president saw a work of art that was perfectly suited for a special spot in Chippewa Falls. Mike Hepfler, Chippewa Falls Fire and Emergency Services chief agrees, and now the statue will have a permanent home in the newly opened Fire Station No.

Northwoods firefighters experience a new kind of training

Firefighters from departments across the Northwoods experienced a different kind of training this weekend. "This is going to be a situation that we never usually run across," said Woodruff's Assistant Fire Chief Victor Gee. Several firefighters spent part of their weekend preparing for a situation that isn't seen often in the Northwoods.

Automatic CPR machines donated to Racine County fire departments

Six western Racine County fire and rescue agencies received automatic CPR device donations Wednesday. The devices were provided by the Memorial Hospital of Burlington Community Foundation. The Lund University Cardiac Arrest System, or LUCAS, helps take the load off first responders in cardiac arrest scenarios by performing 102 chest compressions per minute.

Fitchburg Fire Station move-in begins

The Fitchburg Fire Department has begun moving into its new station on Marketplace Drive, but it isn’t expected to be operating out of there for another few weeks. Fire chief Joe Pulvermacher told the Star in an email he hopes to have the transition finished by July 1 “at the latest,” and that the construction of the station was on schedule to be finished other than minor items by June 8.

Tractor injures three at Darlington parade Sunday, fire chief says

Three people were injured by a tractor at a Darlington parade Sunday, the police department said. A 69-year-old man with the most serious injuries was taken to a Madison hospital by helicopter. Two others -- a 39-year-old man and a 64-year-old man -- were taken to a Lafayette County hospital with minor or moderate injuries, said Darlington Police Department Chief Jason King.

Boat destroyed in fire on Lake Kegonsa, Sheriff's Office says

A Bayliner boat was destroyed by fire Thursday afternoon while docked at a pier at a boat launch on Lake Kegonsa, with the boat owner getting burned in the blaze. The fire was reported at about 5:50 p.m. at the Fish Camp County Park boat launch on the north side of the lake, the Dane County Sheriff's Office said.

Suspected arson spree on Milwaukee's south side: eight fires within one hour

Authorities in Milwaukee are treating multiple early-morning fires on the city's south side as possible arson. The fire department received reports of at least eight trash fires between 3:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. Some of those fires spread to nearby homes, garages and parked vehicles. Many of the reports were along Orchard Street, Lapham Boulevard and Hayes Avenue.

Pickup, camper destroyed by fire in Black River Falls

A 2009 Ford pickup truck and 2002 toy-hauler camper were destroyed by fire Thursday evening in the driveway of a Black River Falls home. When firefighters arrived after 7 p.m. to the blaze in front of 1038 Laura Lane, heavy fire was coming from the camper and spreading to the attached truck. The vehicles are a total loss and heat from the fire melted some vinyl siding on the home and garage, according to a Black River Falls Fire Department news release.

Two injured in house explosion in Winter

Two people were injured when a gas-fired hot water heater exploded at the James Papanek residence at 6521W Hazel Street in the village of Winter at approximately 3:15 p.m. Thursday, June 8. The explosion blew out several windows and scattered insulation and other debris across the lawn in front of and behind the single-story house.

Milwaukee man accused of setting wheelchair-bound sister on fire

A Milwaukee man is accused of setting his wheelchair-bound sister on fire, and killing her, according to a criminal complaint. Nasif Salaan Hibbler, 30, is charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the death of his sister, Sgakira Hicks. Police said Hibbler walked into a Milwaukee police station on Saturday and told officers, “I just set my sister on fire.

Crews respond to fire at DeForest biodiesel plant, dispatch says

Crews responded to a report of a fire at a facility in DeForest Thursday morning, a Dane County dispatcher said. Dispatch said the DeForest Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at 9:16 a.m. at 605 Bassett St., which is the Sanimax plant building. Dane County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Elise Schaffer said deputies also responded to the fire scene to assist DeForest crews.

3 Liberty Firefighters Hurt While Battling Blaze

Three firefighters were injured while battling a house fire in Liberty. Officials say the fire broke out shortly before 9 a.m. Wednesday, at a home on Markean Rd. When fire crews arrived, they saw smoke and flames coming from the home. 14 fire departments responded to the fire. Three firefighters were injured and taken to the hospital.
