Passerby notices fire inside Mayville Fire Department station

VIDEO: A fire broke out at the Mayville Fire Department on Horicon Street late on Saturday, March 4th. Officials said shortly after 10:00 p.m., a passerby saw flames inside the building and called 911. The fire was confined to one apparatus. The station had heavy smoke. The fire station was ventilated and clean up was underway Sunday.

Deer-Grove, Cambridge and Marshall EMS services eyeing merger study

They’ve been talking since 2015 about a three-way merger. Now the Deer-Grove, Cambridge and Marshall EMS services are taking a significant step toward that possibility. In coming weeks, they expect to jointly put out a request for proposal (RFP) seeking a consultant to study the idea. A consultant could be on board this spring.

Walker orders flags to half-staff in memory of Spring Valley fire chief

Gov. Walker has ordered flags be lowered to half-staff in honor of an area fire chief who died last weekend. Terry Shafer, 62 of Spring Valley, died unexpectedly on Saturday. According to his online obituary, he served more than 30 years as fire chief of the Spring Valley Fire Department. He decided to step down as chief last year, but was continuing to serve in various roles with the department.

Beaver Dam firefighters rescue 2 people from apartment fire, including person hanging out window

Beaver Dam fire officials responded to an apartment fire to find someone hanging out of a window, trapped by smoke. The fire took place Thursday afternoon, March 2nd on Lake Crest Drive, near the Beaver Dam Bay Marina. According to the Beaver Dam Fire Department, several people were injured and taken to the hospital -- but they are expected to survive.

Darien Fire Department gets thermal imaging cameras

Darien Fire/EMS Department recently placed five personal thermal imaging cameras in service for crew members. The thermal imaging cameras where purchased using funds donated by Thelma Meyer in memory of her late husband, Darien Fire Department Captain Richard Sawyer. During the years that Captain Sawyer served with the Darien Fire Department no one would have dreamed of being able to see through smoke, but today that is a reality for every firefighter responding on the fire engine in Darien, said Darien Fire Chief Justin Schuenke.

Ice shoves crash into Lake Winnebago boathouse, sparking fire

VIDEO: While the shores of Lake Winnebago see ice shoves annually, massive ice mounds and strong winds this week are providing a stark reminder of just how powerful those shoves can be. State Senator Roger Roth witnessed it first hand, as he watched an ice shove destroy his boathouse Wednesday afternoon.

Kenosha Fire reports fewer seek firefighting jobs

At most businesses, 144 applicants for eight job openings would be an embarrassment of riches. But for the Kenosha Fire Department, that number of applicants is a steep decline from years past, leaving department leaders wondering how they can encourage more to consider careers as firefighters. Chief Charles Leipzig said they would have 400 applicants for job openings 10 years ago.

Back to School: Merrill firefighters learn importance of keeping accurate, clean public records

Driver extricated from car hanging off Kaukauna bridge

PHOTO: No one was injured after a car was found hanging off the Veterans Memorial Bridge Wednesday afternoon. Rescue crews say they were called to the bridge at 1:15 p.m. Upon arrival, one of the passengers was able to get out of the car. Another person was unable to due to the position of the car. Firefighters used a 9,000-pound side winch to stabilize the car and safely extricate the driver.

Spring Valley mourns loss of longtime fire chief

There is a gaping hole in the fabric of the Spring Valley community after the unexpected death of longtime Fire Chief Terry Shafer, who died Saturday, Feb. 25 while on a weekend trip with his brothers. He was 62. Shafer joined Spring Valley Fire in 1979 and began wearing the white chief’s helmet in 1986.

Lightning strikes home in Kenosha, starts fire

VIDEO: A lightning strike started a fire Tuesday night in a Kenosha home. A Kenosha Fire Department battalion chief confirmed the strike on 47th Avenue near 42nd Street. "We did have a line of severe thunderstorms that came through the area with multiple lightning strikes," Battalion Chief Matthew Haerter said.

A family affair: Baraboo firefighter celebrates 40 years

Baraboo Fire Department Deputy Chief Steve Pointon thought he was about to attend a regular staff meeting Monday evening. Instead, he entered the garage to see friends and family standing alongside his fellow firefighters. They were gathered around a cake, ready to congratulate Pointon on his 40 years with the department.

"It's a Huge Concern:" West Bend Arson Suspect Arrested

VIDEO: A man wanted for starting fires at three West Bend businesses has been arrested. Police announced the arrest Tuesday. The most recent fire happened behind Mountain Outfitters on Sunday, when police say the man started a trailer filled with cardboard boxes on fire. "I came out and checked it out, and it was pretty ugly and dirty and damaged," says Mary Gamerdinger, who works at a non-profit next door.

Town of Mitchell fire draws multiple departments

Firefighters from multiple area departments were working Tuesday afternoon to put out a structure fire at a residence in southwestern Sheboygan County. Emergency personnel were dispatched around 1:35 p.m. to the fire at N8746 County Highway W, in the Town of Mitchell, the county sheriff’s office reported.

Chippewa County barn catches fire

A barn caught fire Monday in Chippewa County east of Colfax. Firefighters responded to the fire at about 3:30 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Highway T and Highway B near the town of Howard, according to the Chippewa Fire District. Onalaska fire departments in need of volunteer/paid-on-call firefighters

VIDEO: While full-time career firefighters are out on a call, other emergencies still need to be covered. Sometimes those are handled by volunteer or paid-on-call positions. However, area fire departments say those positions are becoming more and more difficult to retain. "Families are just too busy these days," said Assistant Chief Troy Gudie of the Onalaska Fire Department.

Beloit sees increase in fire and medical calls for service

VIDEO: In the past year Beloit Fire Department has responded to more than 400 calls compared to the previous year. Just last month, they saw a 100 call increase. The Beloit fire chief says aging baby boomers, flu season and people that may not have health insurance are all contributing factors to the spike in calls.

Ten people displaced by fire Sunday night in Madison

VIDEO: Ten people were displaced because of an apartment building fire on the east side of Madison Sunday night. Dane County Communications tells 27 News the call about a fire at 743 North Thompson Drive came in just before 11 p.m. Sunday. Callers told officials there was smoke in the back of the building on the second floor.

Green Bay house fire leaves four without home

VIDEO: An afternoon house fire has left four people in search of a new home. The fire started just before noon on Sunday in the 800 block of Ridge Road in Green Bay. When firefighters arrived heavy smoke was coming from the home. Five additional units were called to the scene to help battle the blaze.
