North Shore Fire Department service levels unsustainable without more funding, analysis shows

A financial analysis shows the North Shore Fire Department would need a 2.5 percent increase from its seven North Shore communities to maintain staffing levels, service response time and operations at its five fire stations. FD staff has dropped 20 percent since 2004, but in that same time period, the emergency call volume has increased 150 percent.

Urban Spelunking: Milwaukee Fire Department's former Third Ward fireboat station

Considering how much waterfront Milwaukee has – between the lake, the rivers and the canals – it makes perfect sense that there's a history of fireboats here. According to the Wisconsin Historical Society, "The first fireboat was launched in 1889 and by the early 1900s four stations were in operation, two of which were positioned near the numerous highly-combustible structures lining the Menomonee and lower Milwaukee Rivers – the coal docks, hay and feed sheds, grain elevators and warehouses.

Body recovered from Rock River

Family, police, firefighters and others continued searching along the Rock River on Monday for Dakota R. Giese, the 21-year-old Janesville man who reportedly fell into the river Saturday. Police said Monday morning they were treating the incident as a missing-person case and asked for the public's help.

Eau Claire summer camp emphasizes importance of EMS and firefighting scenarios

VIDEO: Climbing ladders and practicing emergency service situations are exactly what a group of campers are doing this week. The Owen Withee Curtiss Fire District is in it's second year of putting on a firefighting and EMS camp for boys and girls at UW-Eau Claire's Ropes Course, and it's highly interactive.

“We got this:” 3 charged after 70-year-old Milwaukee man beaten to death during robbery, home set on fire

VIDEO: Three people are now charged in connection with the death of 70-year-old Robert Piotrowski on Milwaukee's south side, which happened on July 3rd. The suspects include Ladarius Boyce, Quincy Qualls and Ebone Spencer. The three persons face the following charges: Felony murder (all three suspects) Arson of building, party to a crime (Boyce and Spencer) Mutilating a corpse (Boyce and Spencer) Piotrowski was found dead inside a home near 28th and Becher early on that Monday.

Stove causes fire at home near Wrightstown

A burner left on a kitchen stove is thought to be the reason for an early morning fire at a Wrightstown home Monday morning. Fire crews were called to the 4000 block of Lost Dauphin Rd. around 2 a.m. They were able to enter the home while the homeowner slept inside. "He appears to be okay. He will not be staying here this evening, just due to residual smoke that's left over inside," said Assistant Fire Chief Mark DeCleene for Greenleaf Fire Department.

Fire contained to basement of Greenfield home

The Greenfield Fire Department responded to a basement fire in a single family home at in the 3100 block of W Cold Spring Road, around 9:35 PM Sunday night. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the basement and had it extinguished within 10 minutes of arriving on scene. The amount of damage from the fire has yet to be determined and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Sheboygan Fire Department Receives Federal Grant

The Sheboygan Fire Department receives nearly $100,000 to help with wellness initiatives for firefighters. A press release from the department says the federal grand money should pay for physicals, equipment, and training equipment to help members improve their health, wellness and fitness. Police Chief Michael Romas: The primary goal of the AFG is to enhance the safety of the public and firefighters with respect to fire-related hazards by providing direct financial assistance to eligible fire departments.

Fire at Flamingo Motel in Lake Delton

Fire causes $450,000 in damage to a Lake Delton Motel on Thursday around 6:30 p.m. According to the Delton Fire Department, firefighters discovered smoke in the indoor pool area and flames coming from the sauna when they arrived. The fire was quickly put out, but the sauna and nearby locker rooms sustained significant damage.

Antique fire truck show at the Chippewa Valley Museum

The public is invited to experience a unique collection of antique fire engines and equipment at an Antique Fire Truck Show from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 23 on the front lawn of the Chippewa Valley Museum in Eau Claire’s scenic Carson Park. This one-day-only exhibit will include the museum’s own 1931 Seagrave Pumper Truck, a 1960s High Top ambulance, late 1800s hose carts, and at least six additional fire trucks dating from the early 1940s through early 1970s.

Lightning strikes 2 Lake Hallie homes, causes gas leak in 1 home

VIDEO: No one was seriously hurt after lightning struck two homes in Lake Hallie Wednesday. Lightning first hit a TV cable box inside a home on 44th Avenue, according to the Chippewa Fire District. Officials told News 18 they checked the attic and removed part of the inside wall. The flames didn't spread, and there was minimal damage.

Riverside Fire District receives books for children at emergency scenes

VIDEO: How do you calm and comfort a child who just escaped a house fire? It's a challenge firefighters face often. A Wisconsin-based program may have an answer. "Reach a Child" donated six backpacks full of books to the Riverside Fire District in Schofield on Thursday morning. Firefighters can hand out the books to children at the scene of emergencies.

Lightning sparks fire at indoor waterpark in the Wisconsin Dells

Lightning is believed to have started a fire at the Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells Wednesday evening. According to a news release from the Wisconsin Dells Police Department, a fire on the roof of the indoor waterpark building was reported at 9:45 PM. When officers arrived, they saw flames and smoke coming from the roof.

Afternoon storm knocks out power, injures electrical worker in Eau Claire

VIDEO: Severe storms ripped through the region Wednesday afternoon, with winds in Eau Claire reaching up to 40 miles power hour. On Chippewa Street, heavy winds toppled a tree, which took down a power line and knocked out power to the area. "My electric went out, and I peaked out the door to see what was going on -- and the wind was blowing like there was no tomorrow" said Eau Claire resident Christina Amaral.

Gas leak causes evacuation in Sun Prairie

Workers installing fiber in Sun Prairie hit a gas main Wednesday afternoon, causing an evacuation near downtown, according to the Sun Prairie Fire Department. The incident happened in the 100 block of North Street around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday. According to the fire department, when fire trucks arrived, there was a smell of natural gas in the area, and firefighters closed down North Street.

Madison CampHERO encourages girls to consider police, fire and EMT careers

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics for 2016 shows a sharp difference in the number of women and men in law enforcement, fire and other related fields. Across the nation, about four percent of women are firefighters and about 14 percent in law enforcement are women. However, a program in Madison is working to even out those statistics.

Recruiting for future Beloit firefighters

In an effort to increase local outreach in the Stateline Area to get job seekers interested in the fire service, the Beloit Fire Department is currently revamping its recruitment policies and youth outreach efforts. The department was asked by the Beloit Police and Fire Commission to review its policies for outreach in April.

Sun Prairie: Guyant compromise on Westside fire station plan fails to pass

Sun Prairie city alders failed to vote on a compromise this week to take the first step in remodeling the Westside Community Service Building (WCSB) for 24/7 fire service on the west side. In two weeks, alders will decide when the project will be added to the Capital Improvement Plan and be placed into the city budget.

Racine firefighters battle two Tuesday afternoon blazes

City firefighters kept busy Tuesday afternoon with a series of calls in close succession, including two structure fires. Investigators: Discarded smoking materials cause of La Crosse apartment fire

VIDEO: Fire crews had to deal with the extreme heat while fighting a fire on La Crosse's south side Tuesday afternoon. The call for the fire at an apartment building on the corner of 8th and Division Streets came just a little after 4 p.m., with firefighters responding within 51 seconds. According to the La Crosse Fire Department, one person living in the building was taken to the hospital to be treated for burns.
