Madison Southwest Side duplex fire displaces resident, fire officials say

A Tuesday afternoon fire on the Southwest Side didn't cause any injuries but has displaced a resident, the Madison Fire Department said. Madison firefighters were called to the fire on the 7800 block of Courtyard Drive at about 4 p.m. Tuesday, said Cynthia Schuster, a fire department spokeswoman. Firefighters were met with thick smoke when they entered the building to put out the fire, which was in the basement, she said.

Dodge County Board amends 2018 budget to include water rescue funds

The 2018 Dodge County budget was amended Tuesday to include $40,000 to go to area fire departments for water rescue equipment. The $111.6 million budget requires a $34 million tax levy, which is an increase of $559,000 over the 2017 levy. The tax levy complies with state-imposed levy limits that restrict counties to an increase based on the change in value of net new construction and an allowable adjustment for the previous year’s unused levy of $99,000.

Milwaukee Fire Department donates free winter coats to students

VIDEO: Milwaukee Firefighters will donate approximately 5,000 winter coats to local kids this month. For the sixth year, MFD is working with Operation Warm to provide free coats for children at Milwaukee schools. This year, firefighters will hand out the coats at 11 area schools. On Tuesday, they stopped in for a presentation and coat distribution at Penfield Montessori Academy.

Greenville returns with plans for new fire station

VIDEO: Town officials could ask electors to approve the construction of a new $5.8 million to $6.7 million fire station next year, three years after a larger proposal was soundly defeated in a referendum. Town Administrator Joel Gregozeski said the vote could come through a special town meeting or a referendum.

Pierce County plow driver spots house on fire, helps owner get to safety

A county plow driver saw a fully engulfed house fire at N7521 Highway 65, Saturday morning, Nov 11. Dispatch sent River Falls Fire Department to the fire at about 6:11 a.m. The plow driver helped the house's owner, Barbara Johnson, get out of the house, Assistant Fire Chief Mike Moody said. He said flames were coming out of several windows when the first fire units arrived.

Firefighters battle blaze at Appleton home

VIDEO: An Appleton home suffered significant damage after a fire Monday night. Appleton firefighters responded to a duplex on the 1500 block of W. Washington Street around 7:30 p.m., said Jeff Felauer, battalion chief. The residents of the home were both accounted for and no injuries were reported. The Grand Chute Fire Department assisted the Appleton Fire Department at the scene.

Firefighter union president expected to announce run for governor

Walworth County searches for fire and EMS answers

Often surveys confirm what people already believe. That's certainly the case with a recent survey of Walworth County fire and EMS officials and municipal government leaders. The surveys returned in late October reveal that public safety is expensive, complicated and struggling to change. Darien Fire Chief Justin Schenke acknowledged that many of the issues raised in the survey aren't new.

Shortage of volunteer firefighters in Bangor, West Salem

The Bangor Burns and West Salem Volunteer Fire Departments are seeking volunteers to fill vacancies and day shifts this month with both departments finding it difficult to get candidates to sign up. Bangor Firefigher TC Allen said the department is seeking more than a dozen men and women to join their roster.

Eau Claire firefighter union members express concern over proposed changes by the city

VIDEO: “You want to make sure that everyone is protected equally in the city of Eau Claire,” says Local 487 member, Karl Johnson. Local 487, or Professional Firefighters of Eau Claire, are expressing concern about a change proposed by city leaders. Within the upcoming 2018 budget, a fourth ambulance would be added to station 6, which is located on the southeast side of Eau Claire.

Bloomer has a new way to keep firefighters healthy

VIDEO: Battling flames is a tough business, and now Bloomer firefighters have a way to do their jobs a little safer. The city of Bloomer now has its first rehab and medical trailer for firefighters. Bloomer Community Ambulance Administrator Mark Schwartz said the trailer is both heated and air conditioned to provide firefighters a safe place during emergencies, like a structure fire, or a natural disaster like the Chetek tornado last spring.

Milwaukee County: Officials ID man who died after jumping into retention pond to elude police

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office on Thursday, November 9th identified the man who died after jumping into a retention pond following a chase in Franklin. He has been identified as 25-year-old Alton Simpson of Rosedale, New York. It happened Saturday afternoon, November 4th. The incident began with a fraud investigation at a store in Franklin.

No injuries after large fire in detached garage in Glendale

VIDEO: Firefighters Wednesday night, November 8th were on the scene of a fire involving a detached garage near 13th and Silver Spring in Glendale. The call came in around 8:00 p.m. Upon arrival, fire crews quickly initiated an aggressive attack on the fire, as well as established protective hose lines to prevent any fire from spreading to multiple neighboring homes and garages.

Milwaukee Fire Department recruits put skills to the test

Milwaukee man indicted for rioting, arson tied to Sherman Park violence is not in custody

VIDEO: Someone is now being held responsible for rioting and torching a BP gas station in Milwaukee's Sherman Park neighborhood -- more than year after the violence. The U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin announced that 20-year-old Toronse Carter of Milwaukee was indicted on Tuesday, November 7th for rioting and arson connected with the Sherman Park violence that broke out in August 2016.

Update: Sturgeon Bay City Council gives endangered granary 60 day reprieve from demolition

A motion to approve bids to take down the Sturgeon Bay west-side waterfront granary was tabled until January at Tuesday’s meeting of the city council but that does not mean the life of the historic structure is assured. Even with more than $1.3 million in commitments from members of the public to restore the granary, a council majority was still hesitant to give the Sturgeon Bay Historical Society more time to save the granary.

Sheboygan man accused of arson, vandalism, who blamed alleged actions on “aliens” committed

A man accused of vandalizing and then trying to burn down a home in Sheboygan multiple times, whom prosecutors say blamed his alleged actions on “aliens,” has been committed by the court after he was found incompetent to proceed in the case against him. 32-year-old Anouphong Inphachack was in court Tuesday, November 7th for a competency hearing.

Milwaukee Common Council overrides Mayor's veto, proposal to give council ability to fire police and fire chiefs moves forward

The Milwaukee Common Council fought back against the mayor on Tuesday, taking a step toward being able to fire the Milwaukee police chief. Alderman Bob Donovan says Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn is losing the rank and file and Council voted 10-5 on Tuesday to ask the state for the ability to fire the police and fire chiefs.

Woman killed in Dunn County house fire

The Dunn County Sheriff's Office says a woman has died in a house fire in the Town of Sand Creek. Dispatchers got a call about the fire at 8:20 p.m. Monday. Firefighters learned the 69-year-old woman who lived in the house was probably at home. Officials later found the woman's body during a search of the home.
