Sturgeon Bay Historical Society commits to granary demolition costs pending third-party review

The Sturgeon Bay Historical Society is offering to cover up to $75,000 of demolition costs for the granary if a third-party structural engineer declares the building cannot be saved. The announcement came on the eve of the Sturgeon Bay Common Council’s decision on whether to follow through on a raze order issued by Fire Chief Tim Dietman on October 17 or to accept over one million dollars from donors to save it from demolition.

Retired firefighters form volunteer Western Lakes Fire District Fire Corps

For both Bob Leonard and Mike LaVenture, the time to retire from their respective fire departments felt like the right move. Leonard, who served with the Dousman Fire Department for 45 years, retired as assistant chief in 2015. LaVenture, who served for 42 years, decided to step down from his position as a lieutenant at the Oconomowoc Fire Department a year later.

PHOTO: Coloring contest winners get prizes from Hudson Fire Department

Winners from four grade groups in the coloring contest held at the annual Pancake Breakfast in October were recently selected and given their prizes. There was a winner from each group. If the winner lived in Hudson, a fire truck and firefighters drove to their house and presented the prize. One winning family, not from Hudson, was asked to come to the station to receive their prize.

2 occupants' feet briefly stuck in crashed car; 5 injured in crash, Madison fire officials say

Five people were injured Friday in a single-vehicle crash on Madison's east side, officials said. The Madison Fire Department said crews responded to a report of a sports sedan that had crashed at about 5:30 p.m. in the 700 block of Meadowlark Drive. According to the report, a sports sedan was headed south on Meadowlark at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control while trying to round a curve at the bottom of a hill.

2 boys rescued from sinking boat in Shawano County

Two boys were rescued Sunday night after their boat sank in the Navarino Wildlife Area. At 5:15 p.m., the Shawano County Sheriff's Department was notified that two boys were knee deep in the water, according to the department. The boys were able to call 911 and used a flashlight to show their position in the water.

Consultant considered to transform Baraboo Fire Department

Baraboo may pay a consultant $24,000 to implement a management plan for the Fire Department. On Thursday, the Baraboo Common Council’s Public Safety Committee voted 3-0 to recommend paying RW Management $4,000 per month for up to six months. The measure will go to the full Common Council. Earlier this year, the Waukesha firm analyzed the Fire Department and determined its needs to add daytime staff and move to a new facility.

Dog dies in north side house fire in Madison

Madison firefighters responded to heavy flames at a residential fire on Wheeler road Sunday morning, officials sad. The home is in the 600 block of Wheeler Road. Firefighters said the owner was not home, which allowed the fire to spread. There was significant smoke and fire damage, officials said. One of the owner's dogs was rescued, but the second dog died.

Tomah Fire Department battles third fire in two weeks

VIDEO: The Tomah Fire Department battled its third structure fire in the last two weeks on Friday, when it responded to a house fire on West Jackson Street around 2:00 in the afternoon. According to the department, upon arrival firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the home, but the heat of the fire caused them to back off and fight the fire from a defensive position.

Wisconsin State Fire Inspector’s Association names Garrison 2017 Fire Chief of the Year

The Wisconsin State Fire Inspector’s Association (WSFIA) recently named Sun Prairie Fire Chief Christopher Garrison as its 2017 Fire Chief of the Year. On Oct. 26, 2017 at the Annual Fire Prevention Professionals Conference in Green Bay, Garrison received the honor. The Fire Chief of the Year Award is a direct result of Garrison’s efforts to educate the public, and promote fire prevention at every opportunity.

Fire damages building on Milwaukee’s south side

VIDEO: Firefighters on Friday morning, November 3rd were called out to the scene of a fire on Milwaukee's south side. Crews responded to the area near 27th and Euclid around 1:30 a.m. The appears to have spread between two businesses. At this time, firefighters are surveying the damage at Nabil's Furniture store and at the former Home Town Market next door.

$100K damage reported in Raymond house fire

Multiple agencies responded to a house fire that broke out at a multi-level home in the 11300 block of Highway G just before 8 a.m. Thursday. Raymond Fire Chief Adam Smith said the tenant in the downstairs apartment was asleep when the smell of smoke woke him up. He opened the door to his bedroom, saw smoke, evacuated and dialed 911.

Fire destroys shed in Chippewa County

A shed is destroyed after a fire. The Chippewa Fire District said it happened just after 3:30 a.m. at 10546 County Trunk X in the Town of Wheaton. The Chippewa Fire District had the fire out in about 20 minutes but remained on scene until about 5:30 a.m. No injuries were reported. The fire district said the shed is a total loss.

Milwaukee Mayor blasts bill that impacts Fire and Police Commission

VIDEO: A power struggle is forming between Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and some state lawmakers. A new bill introduced in Madison could change the way police officers and firefighters fight to get their jobs back. The mayor pointed out only a few years ago, they championed a change that fired police or firefighters, will not continue to get paid as they fought on an appeal.

Eau Claire man charged with arson

VIDEO: An Eau Claire man is charged after his family members told police he started a fire inside his home. 27-year-old Jayson Harding appeared in Eau Claire County court via video Wednesday where a judge issued a signature bond. He faces four counts, including arson of a building. According to a criminal complaint, family members told police they went into Harding's home where it was full of smoke on October 27.

Fitchburg Fire Department responds to basement fire in apartment complex

The Fitchburg Fire Department put out a small fire in the basement of a Fitchburg apartment complex Wednesday night. The call about the fire came in at 9:52 p.m. and the fire was extinguished at 10:04 p.m., according to Dane County Dispatch. There were no injuries, according to Fitchburg Fire DeputyChief Rich Roth.

Fitch-Rona EMS Chief to retire at year’s end

Brian Myrland, who was hired as a part-time chief in 2004, announced last month he would retire effective Dec. 31. The new chief will likely be a familiar face, as the Fitch-Rona EMS Commission voted last Thursday night to pursue an internal candidate, one of the two deputy chiefs. Myrland, who also runs a Middleton-based sports equipment business, has had two full-time deputy chiefs reporting to him in recent years.

Fontana voters to decide ambulance measure

If the Nov. 14 referendum to raise $250,000 from the village levy to support 24-hour paramedic service from Paratech Ambulance Service fails, the village will move back to just 12-hour-a-day coverage. And the village will begin seeking “other options,” including joining up with neighboring communities to create a joint emergency medical service, according to a resolution approved by the village board’s finance committee on Oct.

Eau Claire: Drones aid in river search for missing man

A drone and two search and rescue boats were deployed Tuesday along the Chippewa River in a search for a man missing since Saturday night, although police aren’t certain he entered the water. Brenden K. Felton, 25, was last seen Saturday evening in downtown Eau Claire, walking north on First Avenue from Lake Street, police Detective Lt.

About 80 firefighters battle two-alarm fire on Milwaukee's northwest side

VIDEO: About 80 firefighters battled a two-alarm fire Tuesday night on Milwaukee's northwest side. Video from News Chopper 12 first showed a lot of smoke and then flames coming through the roof. Firefighters were called just before 6 p.m. to Appleton Avenue and 75th Street. They remained at the scene several hours to put out hot spots and make sure the fire didn't spread to the restaurants in the strip of businesses.
