La Crosse second-grader honored for role in saving grandma's life

VIDEO: It's never too early to teach kids how to respond in case of emergency. That’s something an area family can attest to, after a 7-year-old girl helped save a life. Thursday, the La Crosse Fire Department and Mayo Clinic Health System taught students at First Evangelical Lutheran School some lifesaving techniques, including CPR and AED training, and also rewarded second-grader Kenzie Smith for her role in saving her grandmother's life.

Nobody injured in Downtown Madison apartment fire, officials say

A fire caused by a package of cookies on top of a stove forced the evacuation of a Downtown apartment building Wednesday morning. Nobody was hurt in the incident. The fire was reported at about 6:40 a.m. at the Highlander Apartments, 121 W. Gilman St., the Madison Fire Department said. Arriving firefighters heard the alarm and a recorded message with the alarm telling residents to evacuate.

Eagle River Firefighters make ice and snow bar for Pond Hockey Tournament

VIDEO: Firefighters typically fight fires but some Eagle River firefighters spent the day making an ice and snow bar on Wednesday. Crews respond to structure fire in Sun Prairie

VIDEO: Crews were sent to a fire in Sun Prairie Wednesday morning. According to Dane County Dispatch, the call came in around 8:40 a.m. for a structure fire at 1091 Gas light Drive. DeForest Fire Department and Marshall Fire Department responded to the scene. No injuries were reported and crews are still at the scene.

Beloit Fire Department takes steps to help staff shortage

The Beloit Fire Department took strides to mitigate its staffing shortage, with the Beloit Police and Fire Commission approving multiple firefighter and officer positions Monday evening. The PFC approved the hiring of Daniel Pease for Assistant Chief, promotion of Beloit Lt. Jason Griffin as Deputy Chief, while also hiring eight probationary firefighters, and the promotions of three current staff to the rank of lieutenant, motor pump operator and relief motor pump operator.

Mahlon Mitchell says Wisconsin firefighters union has made changes based on critical 2015 audit

The state firefighters' union has made recommended changes since a 2015 U.S. Department of Labor audit found it did not adequately document expenses including hotels, meals and reimbursements for its leaders, its president said Tuesday. Mahlon Mitchell, who has been president of the Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin since early 2011, said the union now follows all the federal agency's recommendations.

Delton firefighter arrives home after being in critical condition

Oshkosh fire chief announces retirement

Baraboo man allegedly burned woman's car because he 'does not like her'

Baraboo man charged with arson allegedly told police he lit a woman’s car on fire because he doesn’t like her. An officer was called to a Walnut Street address the night of Jan. 27 for report of someone lighting papers on fire in a vehicle. According to a criminal complaint, the officer saw a smoking vehicle with visible flames on the driver’s side of the interior.

Rural Holmen home a total loss following fire

VIDEO: One family is left without a home after a large fire north of Holmen Monday night. The call came in just after 7 p.m. for a house on fire on Moe Coulee Road off of County Highway V. Departments from Holmen, Onalaska and the Town of Farmington responded. Holmen Area fire officials say by the time they got to the scene, the home was engulfed in flames and was already a total loss, so they decided not to send firefighters inside the building.

Merton firehouse might get dorms

The Merton Community Fire Department is interested in adding dorms to the firehouse at N67 W28343 Sussex Road, so more firefighters are available on call and reduce response times in emergencies. A man was injured and a garage and truck were destroyed in a Sunday afternoon fire, according to Wind Lake Volunteer Fire Company Chief Rob Robins. Elderly man dies in Iowa County fire

VIDEO: Iowa County deputies are investigating a fire that killed a man in the town of Waldwick Sunday morning. Crews were called to the fire on the 5900 block of County Line Road at 7 a.m., according to a press release by the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office. The house was already engulfed in flames when firefighters got to the scene.

Lake Delton firefighter upgraded to stable condition after being hit by car at accident scene

A Lake Delton firefighter has been upgraded from critical to stable condition after he was hit by a car while responding to a fatal crash on the interstate Saturday. The Lake Delton Fire Department said in a Facebook post that 39-year-old Joe Sabol was seriously injured in that crash when a car lost control and slid into the emergency scene along I-90, where he was responding to another fatal accident.
