Firefighter union president expected to announce run for governor

VIDEO: The president of the Professional Fire Fighters Association of Wisconsin is expected to launch his candidacy for governor. Mahlon Mitchell has a series of events in Green Bay, Milwaukee and Madison on Monday to make a political announcement. Mitchell would join the large field of Democrats hoping for a chance to take on Republican Gov.

Walworth County searches for fire and EMS answers

Often surveys confirm what people already believe. That's certainly the case with a recent survey of Walworth County fire and EMS officials and municipal government leaders. The surveys returned in late October reveal that public safety is expensive, complicated and struggling to change. Darien Fire Chief Justin Schenke acknowledged that many of the issues raised in the survey aren't new.

Shortage of volunteer firefighters in Bangor, West Salem

The Bangor Burns and West Salem Volunteer Fire Departments are seeking volunteers to fill vacancies and day shifts this month with both departments finding it difficult to get candidates to sign up. Bangor Firefigher TC Allen said the department is seeking more than a dozen men and women to join their roster.

Eau Claire firefighter union members express concern over proposed changes by the city

VIDEO: “You want to make sure that everyone is protected equally in the city of Eau Claire,” says Local 487 member, Karl Johnson. Local 487, or Professional Firefighters of Eau Claire, are expressing concern about a change proposed by city leaders. Within the upcoming 2018 budget, a fourth ambulance would be added to station 6, which is located on the southeast side of Eau Claire.

Bloomer has a new way to keep firefighters healthy

VIDEO: Battling flames is a tough business, and now Bloomer firefighters have a way to do their jobs a little safer. The city of Bloomer now has its first rehab and medical trailer for firefighters. Bloomer Community Ambulance Administrator Mark Schwartz said the trailer is both heated and air conditioned to provide firefighters a safe place during emergencies, like a structure fire, or a natural disaster like the Chetek tornado last spring.

Milwaukee County: Officials ID man who died after jumping into retention pond to elude police

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office on Thursday, November 9th identified the man who died after jumping into a retention pond following a chase in Franklin. He has been identified as 25-year-old Alton Simpson of Rosedale, New York. It happened Saturday afternoon, November 4th. The incident began with a fraud investigation at a store in Franklin.

No injuries after large fire in detached garage in Glendale

VIDEO: Firefighters Wednesday night, November 8th were on the scene of a fire involving a detached garage near 13th and Silver Spring in Glendale. The call came in around 8:00 p.m. Upon arrival, fire crews quickly initiated an aggressive attack on the fire, as well as established protective hose lines to prevent any fire from spreading to multiple neighboring homes and garages.

Milwaukee Fire Department recruits put skills to the test

VIDEO: As part of their final exam, Milwaukee Fire Department recruits had to put out a staged fire on the city's north side. Their test continues Thursday, and the recruits will graduate next week. They will start working shortly after that.

Milwaukee man indicted for rioting, arson tied to Sherman Park violence is not in custody

VIDEO: Someone is now being held responsible for rioting and torching a BP gas station in Milwaukee's Sherman Park neighborhood -- more than year after the violence. The U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin announced that 20-year-old Toronse Carter of Milwaukee was indicted on Tuesday, November 7th for rioting and arson connected with the Sherman Park violence that broke out in August 2016.

Update: Sturgeon Bay City Council gives endangered granary 60 day reprieve from demolition

A motion to approve bids to take down the Sturgeon Bay west-side waterfront granary was tabled until January at Tuesday’s meeting of the city council but that does not mean the life of the historic structure is assured. Even with more than $1.3 million in commitments from members of the public to restore the granary, a council majority was still hesitant to give the Sturgeon Bay Historical Society more time to save the granary.

Sheboygan man accused of arson, vandalism, who blamed alleged actions on “aliens” committed

A man accused of vandalizing and then trying to burn down a home in Sheboygan multiple times, whom prosecutors say blamed his alleged actions on “aliens,” has been committed by the court after he was found incompetent to proceed in the case against him. 32-year-old Anouphong Inphachack was in court Tuesday, November 7th for a competency hearing.

Milwaukee Common Council overrides Mayor's veto, proposal to give council ability to fire police and fire chiefs moves forward

The Milwaukee Common Council fought back against the mayor on Tuesday, taking a step toward being able to fire the Milwaukee police chief. Alderman Bob Donovan says Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn is losing the rank and file and Council voted 10-5 on Tuesday to ask the state for the ability to fire the police and fire chiefs.

Woman killed in Dunn County house fire

The Dunn County Sheriff's Office says a woman has died in a house fire in the Town of Sand Creek. Dispatchers got a call about the fire at 8:20 p.m. Monday. Firefighters learned the 69-year-old woman who lived in the house was probably at home. Officials later found the woman's body during a search of the home.

Sturgeon Bay Historical Society commits to granary demolition costs pending third-party review

The Sturgeon Bay Historical Society is offering to cover up to $75,000 of demolition costs for the granary if a third-party structural engineer declares the building cannot be saved. The announcement came on the eve of the Sturgeon Bay Common Council’s decision on whether to follow through on a raze order issued by Fire Chief Tim Dietman on October 17 or to accept over one million dollars from donors to save it from demolition.

Retired firefighters form volunteer Western Lakes Fire District Fire Corps

For both Bob Leonard and Mike LaVenture, the time to retire from their respective fire departments felt like the right move. Leonard, who served with the Dousman Fire Department for 45 years, retired as assistant chief in 2015. LaVenture, who served for 42 years, decided to step down from his position as a lieutenant at the Oconomowoc Fire Department a year later.

PHOTO: Coloring contest winners get prizes from Hudson Fire Department

Winners from four grade groups in the coloring contest held at the annual Pancake Breakfast in October were recently selected and given their prizes. There was a winner from each group. If the winner lived in Hudson, a fire truck and firefighters drove to their house and presented the prize. One winning family, not from Hudson, was asked to come to the station to receive their prize.

2 occupants' feet briefly stuck in crashed car; 5 injured in crash, Madison fire officials say

Five people were injured Friday in a single-vehicle crash on Madison's east side, officials said. The Madison Fire Department said crews responded to a report of a sports sedan that had crashed at about 5:30 p.m. in the 700 block of Meadowlark Drive. According to the report, a sports sedan was headed south on Meadowlark at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control while trying to round a curve at the bottom of a hill.

2 boys rescued from sinking boat in Shawano County

Two boys were rescued Sunday night after their boat sank in the Navarino Wildlife Area. At 5:15 p.m., the Shawano County Sheriff's Department was notified that two boys were knee deep in the water, according to the department. The boys were able to call 911 and used a flashlight to show their position in the water.

Consultant considered to transform Baraboo Fire Department

Baraboo may pay a consultant $24,000 to implement a management plan for the Fire Department. On Thursday, the Baraboo Common Council’s Public Safety Committee voted 3-0 to recommend paying RW Management $4,000 per month for up to six months. The measure will go to the full Common Council. Earlier this year, the Waukesha firm analyzed the Fire Department and determined its needs to add daytime staff and move to a new facility.

Dog dies in north side house fire in Madison

Madison firefighters responded to heavy flames at a residential fire on Wheeler road Sunday morning, officials sad. The home is in the 600 block of Wheeler Road. Firefighters said the owner was not home, which allowed the fire to spread. There was significant smoke and fire damage, officials said. One of the owner's dogs was rescued, but the second dog died.
