Fireworks blamed in blaze that destroyed Madison warehouse

Fireworks played a role in a late-night fire that tore through a warehouse on Madison’s south side and destroyed the building, according to the city’s fire department. Madison Fire Chief Chris Carbon indicated fireworks likely sparked the blaze while MFD’s initial report added the flammable items inside the warehouse helped it spread.

La Crosse fire crews rescue hiker after 40 foot fall from Grandad Bluff

At 8:42 p.m. July 1, the La Crosse Fire Department was dispatched to Grandad Bluff Road for a report of a hiker who had fallen — the drop was determined to be around 40 feet — and sustained injuries. Local fire crews were on the scene at 8:47 p.m. and located the hiker below the observation area of Grandad Bluff Park.

Wisconsin DNR recommends against fireworks use in state parks

Ahead of Fourth of July weekend, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds the public that fireworks are prohibited on DNR-managed lands. These restricted areas include state parks, forests and state-owned public hunting and fishing areas, according to Wisconsin DNR. In Wisconsin, fireworks are also regulated and in order to legally use them, patrons must obtain a permit, depending on the type of firework that is being used.

Lake Mills, area towns discuss EMS future

As Lake Mills continues to examine how its EMS service will look in the future, area towns had a glimpse of that as well last week. In a special common council meeting June 16, City Administrator Steve Wilke discussed options he outlined in a June 3 16-page memo to aldermen. The towns of Lake Mills, Waterloo, Milford and Aztalan had representatives in attendance.

How a drone helped fight De Pere apartment complex fire

No one was hurt, but six people are without a home after an apartment complex fire in De Pere Wednesday morning. As soon as the 911 call came in at 9:15, fire crews knew exactly what to expect and do to knock the fire down quickly. The 90-unit Crow’s Nest Apartments along the Fox River is one of many locations throughout the area known to firefighters as a “target hazard,” meaning they know it’s a building that will require many units to respond to help people evacuate.

Volunteer firefighters in northwest Wisconsin receive life saving fire suppression kits

Some volunteer firefighters in Wisconsin received a gift Wednesday that could save lives. The Acacia-Itasca Masonic Lodge of Superior presented three local fire departments with fire suppression units. The kits went to departments in the towns of Superior, Oakland, and Gordon. The lodge held fundraisers, including a Palm Sunday pancake breakfast to help purchase the units, which cost about $1,000 each.

Four people rescued from boat on Mississippi River near La Crosse

First responders rescued four people from a houseboat stranded on the Mississippi River on Tuesday night. The people on the boat called for help around 8 p.m. One of those on board told News 8 Now the vessel’s propeller failed, and they started floating south. Town of Campbell firefighters pulled the boat and the people on it to safety.

Greendale firefighter's Muskego home burned, chief receives VFW hero's award

Saying thank you from one hero to another, the Wisconsin VFW honored a Greendale fire chief for his service to his community, including one of his own firefighters. In February, Greendale Fire Lieutenant Mike Schmitt was among the crews rushing to a house fire in Muskego. He'd learn the fire was at his home.

Follow Up: Minocqua fire chief says hot material dumped into building started transfer station fire

Earlier Monday morning the Minocqua Waste Management Hauling & Transfer Station burst into flames. The fire broke out in the main processing building. A neighbor near the waste management station said he heard a loud explosion before noticing smoke coming from the area. 19 fire departments from around the Northwoods responded with 50 trucks and 150 firefighters coming through to help.

Crews respond to Cooks Valley barn fire

Crews from two Chippewa County fire departments are battling a fire at a farm on County Highway C in the township of Cooks Valley. Over a dozen emergency crews respond to Door County fire

Over a dozen emergency crews assisted with a Door County house fire Sunday. The Egg Harbor Fire Department said crews responded to a grass fire that spread to a home at 6072 Windsong Bluff Drive around 10 a.m. Firefighters saw flames coming from the second story of the home. “Fire crews made an aggressive fire attack until water supply ran low,” Chief Justin MacDonald posted on social media.

Historic Grantsburg Fire Station bell has a new home

The Grantsburg Rural Fire Association continues to make improvements to their fire station property, and last week completed the installation of a unique piece of local firefighting history, that also has a bit of a sad tale behind it. The original Grantsburg Fire Station bell was installed on the corner of South Pine Street and East Broadway, also showing a placard of the history and background of the huge iron fixture.

Worker injured at Milwaukee construction site

A worker was injured Thursday afternoon at a construction site near the Milwaukee lakefront. The Milwaukee Fire Department confirmed it was called to the 900 block of East Michigan Street for a person injured. Crews used a basket to lift the construction worker out of the site and then took the person to an area hospital.
