Milwaukee property damage from unrest could reach millions

The latest on violence in Milwaukee following the shooting of a black man by a police officer (all times local): 11 a.m. Federal officials say the cost of damage to eight businesses that were burned during violence in a north side Milwaukee neighborhood could exceed several million dollars. A team of special agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is investigating the fires that destroyed or damaged a BP gas station, an auto parts store, a bank, a beauty supply shop, a grocery store and three liquor stores on Saturday and Sunday.

2 injured by fallen tree on Capitol Square in Madison

A falling tree struck and injured two people Tuesday evening on the Capitol Square, according to a release from the Madison Fire Department. Firefighters were called to Carroll Street at West Washington Avenue at 6:28 p.m. Witnessed said two men were walking in the area, when the tree suddenly snapped and fell on them.

Fire destroys business in Dale

VIDEO: A family owned business is destroyed this morning after a fire in Outagamie county. The fire broke out around 2:30 A.M. at Valley Snowmobile & Powersports in the town of Dale. When firefighters arrived the building was fully engulfed and the roof caved in. The house nearby was untouched and no one was injured.

Over 50 cats removed from home in Monroe

VIDEO: Monroe police and fire officials removed over 50 cats from a home in Monroe Monday. Police officials say they were called about the home last week with complaints of an odor coming from the home on the 1100 block of 19th Street. After investigating, officials found the smell came from an excessive amount of cats being kept in the home.

Kansasville Fire buys first new ambulance

With patient transport times to area hospitals taking anywhere from 20 to 25 minutes, having a reliable ambulance is crucial for the Kansasville Fire and Rescue Department. And for the first time since it began providing ambulance service in 2007, the department is in the training process so it can utilize its first new ambulance.

Five vie to be Kenosha fire chief

Five people will be interviewed later this month for the Kenosha Fire Department’s chief position. The city received 13 applicants for the job, narrowing it to five for interviews scheduled for Aug. 31. On Sept. 22, the candidates are scheduled to go through a second assessment with an outside agency helping with the job search, said LaVetta Buckley-Hunter, city deputy director of human resources.

Fire destroys shed at a Marathon County farm

Fire destroyed a large shed Monday in the Town of Hamburg. The shed collapsed at Double P Dairy about an hour after the fire started. Traffic was reduced to one lane on County Road A, as crews fought the blaze. Firefighters say the owners of the farm were not at the scene when the fire started. Five different fire departments responded to the blaze.

Fond du Lac fire fundraise for muscular dystrophy

You may have seen them: on Thursday and Friday, a procession of firefighters braved rain in their annual Fill the Boot fundraiser, to help combat Muscular Dystrophy. More than 20 members of the Fond du Lac Fire Department Local 400 fanned out across downtown to collect donations from passing cars and pedestrians.

Fire damages two homes on Milwaukee's northwest side

PHOTO: An early-morning fire damaged two homes in Milwaukee's Uptown neighborhood on the northwest side. It's unclear whether the fire, reported at around 4 a.m. Tuesday at 50th and Wright, is related to the recent spate of violence in the adjacent Sherman Park neighborhood. An official with the fire department said flames were shooting from a vacant home when they arrived.

Hay, shed lost in overnight blaze in Gillett

An overnight fire destroyed a shed and about 1,000 bales of hay. Firefighters from five area departments responded to the fire, which was still smoldering after sunrise Monday. It was called in about midnight, and town of Gillett firefighters arrived to find it fully engulfed, Chief Dale Reichwald said.

Sawyer County: Drones have become a search and rescue tool

The recent use of a drone by the Barron County Sheriff to aid in locating the body of Dennis Meyer, the suspect in the recent murder-suicide in the Town of Round Lake, is the first time such an unmanned aircraft has been employed in a Sawyer County search. Sawyer County Search and Rescue member Mel VanWey owns drones and was asked to use his during the nighttime search for Meyer, but he declined because his drones do not have a thermal imaging camera and are unable to fly in the rain.

Residents displaced after Madison apartment fire

Residents from three apartments were displaced after a kitchen fire broke out Sunday night, according to a release from the Madison Fire Department. Firefighters were called at 10:18 p.m. to River’s Edge Apartments at 1766 Fordem Avenue on a report of an alarm activation. Neighbors also reported seeing fire on the top floor of the building.

Eau Claire Fire Department investigating fire at Presto factory

VIDEO: The Eau Claire Fire Department is investigating a fire that happened at the National Presto Industries factory Sunday afternoon. Crews were called to the building on North Hastings Way at about 2 p.m. They say employees were already evacuated by the time they arrived. Authorities could see smoke coming out of several vents and at the roof-line, but they say flames were pretty much contained to one of the machines used for manufacturing.

Watertown Fire Department seeks funds for staffing, new station

In response to rising call volume and an increasing city population, the Watertown Fire Department is requesting funds to be allocated in the 2017 budget to fill personnel vacancies and construct a new station. Sheboygan may commission study on fire services

City officials are considering spending an estimated $40,000 to $70,000 for a comprehensive study on the city's fire services. The decision to request proposals and cost estimates from independent consultants comes on the heels of a study recently completed by the Sheboygan firefighters union, which concluded staffing reductions at city fire departments have left areas of the city without satisfactory fire protection.

Several people rescued in Gilmanton flash flood

Kaukauna to build new fire station

In the next month, construction of a new fire station will begin – the second of three facility projects happening in Kaukauna. 200 employees evacuated from Full Compass in Madison

Employees were evacuated from Full Compass during the investigation of a gas leak Thursday morning, according to the Madison Fire Department. Firefighters were called at 9:56 a.m. to the business at 9710 Silicon Prairie Parkway. An official said 200 people were evacuated from the building, and eight of them complained of feeling sick.
