Investigators with the La Crosse Fire Department are looking into a house fire early Thursday morning. The call came in at around 3:30 a.m. about a fire in the attic of a home on the 400 block of 12th Street North. Firefighters tell News 8 three people and two pets made it out of the house safely. La Crosse Fire Chief Gregg Cleveland has announced plans to retire after more than a decade with the city of La Crosse. Cleveland, who has logged more than three decades as a firefighter and chief, will step down in June, according to a statement released Tuesday by Mayor Tim Kabat. Crews responded Tuesday afternoon to reports of a vehicle that was on fire and rolling toward a steakhouse on Madison’s west side, according to a release. La Crosse's fire chief says finding a location for a new station on the south side is a priority for the new year. Chief Gregg Cleveland says money has already been set aside as part of the city's capital improvement budget to buy land for a new station. A woman and three dogs escaped without injury from a fire in an Oneida County Tuesday morning. Firefighters were called at about 8:30 to Poplar Drive, just off Highway 17 north of Rhinelander. The fire started in the living room and left heat and smoke damage to the home. Five people became sick Saturday from vapors that were briefly released at a west Madison car shop, a Madison fire official said. Dane County dispatch said crews responded to a report of people sickened by chemicals at 11:22 a.m. at Don Miller on Odana Road. A Madison firefighter is retiring after 28 years on the job and being part of six generations of his family to serve the Madison Fire Department.
