Column: I can drive like a cop, but not a firefighter

The tires spun beneath me on the wet pavement as I stepped on the gas. I took off toward a row of orange cones. I had two options as I approached: left or right. The only problem, though, was I didn’t get to decide which direction I took. That was up to the police officer sitting in the passenger seat.

Weyauwega area firefighters train for safety

The Weyauwega Area Fire District recently held training on grain-rescue safety for volunteer firefighters at CHS Larsen Cooperative in Weyauwega, Wisconsin. Harvest is well underway and farmers will soon be filling grain bins. Working in grain bins can be a dangerous activity. Thus it's important to be prepared for any unforeseen emergencies during harvest and tp have the proper training and equipment.

Shed is a total loss in Dunn County fire

VIDEO: Crews spent hours battling a fire in Dunn County that is now considered a total loss. According to the Elk Mound Fire Department, the fire started just after around 5 P.M. on Sunday evening. Crews say the fire started in a machine shed near a house off of 210th Avenue in the Town of Spring Brook.

Flags fly at half-staff Saturday for firefighters, veterans

VIDEO: Flags around the state were ordered at half-staff on Saturday by Governor Scott Walker. It's in honor of Wisconsin Firefighters Memorial Day and to honor Korean War Veteran Cpl. Donald Ray Hendrickson. The flags were lowered to recognize the brave men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice while on duty as firefighters.

Osseo Fire Department on the verge of operating illegally

VIDEO: A local fire department is pushing its limits of operation and looking for public support to help build a new station. This November, the Osseo Fire Department is asking voters to pass a $2.5 million referendum for a new fire station. “We’re packed in here,” Osseo Fire Chief Nels Gunderson explained.

Delafield firefighter battling brain tumor organizes fire department open house

The Delafield Fire Department opened its doors to the community Saturday to really give an up-close look at how everything works. The organizer of the open house is Nick Stacey. The firefighter and his 3-year old son, Brayden, are battling brain tumors. Stacey said he wanted to make sure his son, and the community that's supporting them, could see the station.

Police disarm second airbag device in Kenosha County this week

For the second time this week, a suspicious device has been discovered in Kenosha County. Pleasant Prairie police and firefighters responded at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday to the 10500 block of 80th Avenue and discovered a suspicious item underneath a picnic bench, according to a news release from the village.

New Wisconsin Rapids fire trailer helps students learn safety

A group of Immanuel Lutheran School students were standing in a small kitchen this week when suddenly flames began to shoot up from a garbage can in the corner. As smoke poured from the trash can, Wisconsin Rapids Firefighter Mike Lisitza calmly asked the students, who were from Susan Cour's third-grade class, what they should do when a fire breaks out.

Stove fire damages Janesville home Wednesday

Groceries left on the kitchen stove are being blamed for a fire that damaged a home at 12 S. Chatham St. on Wednesday. The homeowner, Holly Grams, said she didn't think the stove was on. “I was home, left to take a friend home, and I left some groceries on the stove,” Grams said. Upon return, smoke was billowing out of the windows of the house, Grams said.

Lightning strike causes fire near 670,000 gallons of solid waste in Madison

A lightning strike is believed to be the cause of a fire that started early Wednesday morning at the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District headquarters on Madison’s south side. According to a Madison Fire Department incident report, Ladder Company 6 and other crews arrived on the scene after employees saw lightning and smelled something burning.

Growing Altoona looking to hire fire chief, two other department heads

Altoona police and fire Chief Jesse James says the city needs to hire a full-time fire chief to meet the growing city’s demands. Fire and emergency medical services calls are up nearly 30 percent and police calls up about 7 percent compared with last year, James said Wednesday. “What it comes down to is the city needs to think progressively, to be more proactive than reactive with the growth we’re experiencing in the amount of fire, EMS and police calls,” he said.

Delafield Firefighter and 3-year-old Son Diagnosed with Brain Tumors

Sun Prairie apartment complex fire displaces resident, officials say

A fire in the kitchen of a Sun Prairie apartment was quickly put out Tuesday, but displaced one resident, the Sun Prairie Fire Department said. Shortly before 4 p.m., firefighters responded to an apartment complex on South Bird Street after reports of a structure fire, the fire department said. After arriving, firefighters quickly took care of a fire in the kitchen of a first floor unit, while an off-duty firefighter helped the apartment's resident out, according to the fire department.

National Fire Prevention Week kicks off in Milwaukee

Milwaukee firefighter loses part of finger using saw at fire

A firefighter lost part of a finger while helping to battle a two-alarm fire on Milwaukee's north side, officials said. The fire was reported late Monday night at a duplex near 4th Street and Concordia Avenue. Flames then spread to a neighboring duplex. Police told WISN 12 News the firefighter was injured while using a saw on the roof.

Vote could improve Osseo Rural Fire Station

Osseo Rural Fire Department Chief Nels Gunderson slipped between two firetrucks parked close together, then later pointed to damage a truck received when hit by another in the crowded station. “This was never designed to be a fire station, and we just don't have the room we need,” Gunderson said while explaining the need for a new, larger, better located facility.
