Ultralight aircraft crashes into Rock River in Fort Atkinson; Two dead

Officials have confirmed that two people have died after an ultralight aircraft crashed into the river near Ft. Atkinson's municipal airport around 8 p.m. Tuesday evening, Aug. 8, 2017. The victims are a 61-year-old male and his 16-year-old son, authorities say. Officials currently are updating the media.

Sun Prairie Alders approve west side fire station remodel

Fire damages Vinland home early Sunday

A fire damaged a building early Sunday on Winnebago County GG. Winnebago County Sheriff's Lt. Jeff Meyer said police responded to reports of a man screaming and flagging down motorists just before 1 a.m. near Green Valley Road and County GG. When they arrived, authorities found a home on fire in the 2500 block of County Road GG, Meyer said.

Firefighter Fun Day in Madison proves to be a win-win for firefighters and the community

Hundreds showed up to fire station five today in Madison for the team's fourth annual Firefighter Fun Day. Organizers say it's a chance for first responders to meet and interact with the people they serve everyday. The firehouse had lots of things for people and their families to do. The station gave tours, showed off their fire trucks and let people get a look inside their ambulances.

Milwaukee garage destroyed by fire, possibly sparked by blown transformer

A possible blown transformer sparked a fire on Milwaukee’s northwest side early Friday, August 4th. Milwaukee firefighters were called to the garage fire near 89th and Thurston. Nobody was hurt. Milwaukee police and firefighters are investigating this incident.

Rock County authorities seek better ways to cope with opioid epidemic

The rising misuse of opioids in Rock County has been labeled an epidemic by local health officials, and multiple groups have supported ways to combat the problem through state and federal legislative changes. Rock County officials are looking for ways to provide greater treatment access and an increase in overall funding to combat opioid abuse.

Kenosha County: Two semis involved in multivehicle crash on Highway KR

Flight for Life was called Thursday to a crash involving two semitrailers and two smaller vehicles near the intersection of highways 31 and KR. Authorities responded just after 11:30 a.m. to the crash, which occurred at the railroad tracks west of the intersection of highways 31 and KR, in the 6500 block of Highway KR (also known as County Line Road and 1st Street).

Rhinelander fire chief explains ambulance billing procedures

The Rhinelander Fire Department made a total of 1,568 ambulance calls for service in 2016, resulting in bills totaling $582,761.26 sent out to either the persons treated, their insurance carriers or Medicaid and Medicare, the city's public safety committee learned Tuesday. Rhinelander fire chief Terry Williams also presented the committee with the breakdown by payor for those runs, as well as some other interesting statistics regarding medical runs his department made last year.

Goodrich Police: Man wakes up in woods after his garage catches fire

VIDEO: A 42-year-old man says he doesn't remember how he ended up more than 10 miles from his house after his garage caught fire, Taylor County's chief deputy sheriff said Thursday. Firefighters were called to Shane Ziegel's house on State Highway 64 in Goodrich on the evening of July 27. Ziegel was not home and was considered missing.

Female firefighter is Stevens Point's second in department history

Kelly Heise hasn’t felt at all out of place at her new job. But Heise, 24, is only the second woman ever to work as a firefighter and paramedic at the Stevens Point Fire Department. The other, Tracey Kujawa, a former chief, left the department in 2014. Heise, who grew up in Rhinelander, joined the department last month.

Students raise $10,000 to restore Plover 9/11 memorial

VIDEO: A group of Ben Franklin Junior High School students raised $10,000 to restore a 9/11 memorial in Plover. They raised the money all in one day at the Celebrate Plover fest. "It's a really good feeling," said student Sarah Adams. "Shows we can actually do something and change." The students have been working with two mentors for five months to make the fundraiser happen.

Retired firefighter makes generous donation to Milwaukee Fire Dept.

VIDEO: It's a donation that is sure to save lives. The Milwaukee Fire Department (MFD) received on Wednesday, August 2nd a generous gift from one of its own. When Paul Conway first suited up more than 30 years ago, thermal imaging wasn't around. It would be years before the technology was developed for firefighters.

Crews put out shed fire near Augusta

VIDEO: Crews said they believe a fire near Augusta may have been caused by sparks while work was being done on a grinder machine. Ken Zich, the fire chief of Augusta-Bridge Creek Fire Department, said they responded around 11 a.m. Wednesday to a fire at a property on County Road M in the Town of Bridge Creek, southeast of Augusta.

Rhinelander firefighters raise nearly $15,000 in annual "Fill the Boot" campaign for MDA

VIDEO: Rhinelander firefighters filled plenty of boots with cash and change in July. Tuesday, Newswatch 12 learned those firefighters brought in one of their highest totals ever. The fire department presented the Muscular Dystrophy Association with a check for $14,856. Firefighters spent several days working a busy Rhinelander intersection collecting money for the annual MDA campaign during Hodag Country Fest.

Fire Starts at Oshkosh Business

Fire has caused an unknown amount of damage at an Oshkosh business. Investigators say the blaze at Bedding Specialists was caused by a torch that an asphalt company was using to clear weeds in the parking lot. The fire started at 12:23 pm Tuesday and was under control within ten minutes. Upon arrival, firefighters reported heavy smoke coming from the building's south side.

One person injured in chemical spill at UW Animal Science building

One person was hurt in a laboratory at the UW-Madison Animal Science building Monday afternoon after a bottle of chemicals broke on the floor. The incident happened at about 1:40 p.m. on the 10th floor of the building on campus at 1675 Observatory Drive, the Madison Fire Department said. The victim reported eye irritation after a bottle containing chloroform and methanol was dropped on the floor.

Beaver Dam Fire Chief recommends new rescue boat to commission

Beaver Dam Police and Fire Commission unanimously approved purchase of a new rescue boat for the Beaver Dam Fire Department Tuesday night. Fire Chief Alan Mannel is recommending a 24-foot aluminum boat made by Kann Manufacturing with a low bid of $61,000. Mannel said in an email that the boat will have a semi-v bottom, trailer and a Mercury outboard motor.

Update: Deadly explosion in Greenfield believed to have resulted from fumes building up

Investigators have concluded that the explosion and fire that killed a 24-year-old Greenfield man at an apartment complex was caused by a buildup of gasoline fumes near a running lawnmower. Andrew J. Knutson died in the explosion and fire in a maintenance shed at the Willowick Apartments, 7020 W. Southridge Drive, shortly before 10 a.

Authorities suspect they found Milwaukee arsonist in burn unit

A 24-year-old found at an area hospital with severe burns is believed to be behind an explosion and fire two weeks ago that destroyed a a Honda Ridgeline and a garage on the city's north side. According to a search warrant, a neighbor saw a man running from the fire at North 29th and West Center streets on July 17 while tearing off his two burning shirts.
