A Superior Fire Department battalion chief who retired just a few weeks ago died on April 18 after "a long and brave struggle" with mental illness, Mayor Jim Paine said on Tuesday.

An unmanned garbage truck caught fire near the city’s Pearl Street Facility at about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday. No one was injured, although smoke could be seen from more than a mile away. One person died in a Monday afternoon fire that burned a small barn, tin outbuilding and a couple acres of grass in Pepin County. The Pepin County sheriff’s office withheld the victim’s identity on Monday night, pending notification of family. 18 people were taken to the hospital after the ammonia spill at Abbyland Foods in Abbotsford Monday evening.
