Racine house fire on Rapids Drive sends one to hospital

One person was transported to the hospital for possible smoke inhalation following a house fire Tuesday night. The Racine Fire Department was dispatched at 9:24 p.m. to the 1600 block of Rapids Drive for a report of a structure fire that started on a couch. All occupants of the home were reported to be out of the residence when firefighters arrived.

Altoona council approves emergency fees

The Altoona City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to allow the city to charge nonresidents and nontaxpayers who require emergency calls that exceed $1,000. “Unless we do something, we’re not going to bill,” Altoona fire Chief Mark Renderman said. “We should be doing something significant, and it has to exceed $1,000 for us to start billing.

Fire crews respond to a barn fire in the Greenville area

Multiple Fire crews were called to a barn fire Tuesday morning on County Road JJ and State Road 76 across from the North Greenville Elementary School. When Firefighters arrived on scene heavy black smoke could be seen coming from the building. It's unknown at this time if there were any people or animals in the barn when the fire started.

Suspects to be charged in Wausau high school property arson case

Two men Wausau Police said burned down a shed at Wausau East High School are expected to be formally charged Tuesday in Marathon County Circuit Court. William Ritchie, 22, and Jacob Kerswill, 19, were both arrested Jan. 11. The Wausau Fire Department was called to a shed fire around 6 a.m. Jan. 10 at Wausau East High School.

Emergency crews thankful for Bloomer rehab trailer

After mid-May 2017 tornado ripped through Chetek and Cameron, Wis., leaving one person dead and dozens injured, staff from Lakeview Medical Center in Rice Lake were returning to the devastation to utilize their medical training and emergency response training in any way they could. Full-time paramedic with the center and Bloomer Community Ambulance Service Chief Mark Schwartz was one those medical professionals assisting on scene.

Racine County: West end fire organizations elect new fire chiefs

The new year has brought a change in command for two firefighting units in western Racine County. Bill Vrchota, a 24-year veteran of the Town of Burlington Fire Department, was elected by his membership to be chief of the 26-member volunteer department. And, next door in Rochester, Jack Biermann Jr., a 20-year veteran of the Rochester Volunteer Fire Company, has been elected chief of the 25-member fire and rescue outfit.

Boy dies after New Richmond-area house fire

The intensity of a house fire prevented rescue efforts for a boy stuck inside a burning house Monday afternoon in the town of Richmond. St. Croix County Sheriff Scott Knudson confirmed later in the day that the child died as a result of the fire, reported at about 3:15 p.m. Jan. 15. at 1745 Margaret St.

Large fire reported in Holmen

Firefighters are at the scene of a large fire at a group of town homes in Holmen. Crews were called to 615 McHugh Road around 10:45 a.m. for a fire in one of the buildings. Fire breaks out in single-family Black River Falls home, displaces renters

Two renters were displaced after a fire broke out in a town of Adams single-family home on Monday. Forest fire danger recedes in Wisconsin during winter

Where there’s snow, there’s no fire. Once snow covers the ground, the chance of a forest fire is low, Megan Mickelson, Monroe County forest liaison/private lands forester for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, said. “Once snow covers the fuel that can burn, there’s not really a chance of fire unless some of the fuel is uncovered,” she said.

New Cottage Grove fire chief appointed

Newly appointed Fire Chief Jude Wolf vividly remembers the day he wanted to be a firefighter. He was 4 when he saw a fire at a newspaper plant in Milwaukee. “I remember walking down toward the scene, watching in awe, and from that moment, I had the dream of becoming a firefighter,” Wolf said. Wolf was elected fire chief of the Cottage Grove Volunteer Fire Department by the Cottage Grove Volunteer Association in November.

Beloit faces firefighter shortage after retirements, federal grant expires

The Beloit Fire Department is facing a shortage of firefighters after 12 people retired last year and the city only has enough money to replace nine positions. “It’s going to put a lot of pressure on the guys that are remaining, but the guys that did leave were all mentors, and they trained us well, and we’re up for the task,” said Scott Smith, a Beloit fire captain and president of Beloit Professional Firefighters Local #583.

Milwaukee Fire Dept.: 4 trucks burned in fire near 6th and Layton; cause under investigation

Four trucks burned Thursday, Jan. 11 at a business near S. 6th St. and Layton Ave. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire officials said it caused $300,000 in damage. We're told Mortle Trucking lost three trucks as a result of the fire. The trucks are used to transport asphalt and gravel.

Niagara Firefighters Find Missing Man Dead in Woods

The body of a 19-year-old man was found off of Barlow Lake Road in the Town of Niagara on Monday, Jan. 8. Jacob Gleason was believed to be traveling through the area on his way back to Houghton before he ended up in the woods. At 1:45 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 7, someone reported a car with Michigan plates that had been abandoned off of Barlow Lake and Brown Spur on a snowmobile trail.

Crews rescue fisherman who fell through ice on Lake Mendota

VIDEO: Foggy conditions made it hard for law enforcement to find an ice fisherman, after he fell through the ice on Lake Mendota. Fire causes evacuation in Sparta neighborhood

VIDEO: A portion of a Sparta neighborhood was evacuated Wednesday night after a house fire. Firefighters from the Sparta Area Fire District were called to the area of Tyler and Main Streets at about 7 p.m. Initial calls said a garage was on fire before the flames spread to the house. Chief Mike Arnold says there were two vehicles in the garage at the time of the fire and between 50 and 60 tires in the garage's attic.

Fire damages home near 39th and Roberts in Milwaukee
