A Superior Fire Department battalion chief who retired just a few weeks ago died on April 18 after "a long and brave struggle" with mental illness, Mayor Jim Paine said on Tuesday. Erik Sutton, 46, who had served on the Superior Fire Department for 20 years, took his own life, Paine said. Sutton had sought and received care prior to his death.

City of Racine garbage truck catches fire

An unmanned garbage truck caught fire near the city’s Pearl Street Facility at about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday. No one was injured, although smoke could be seen from more than a mile away. The vehicle was idling in the city’s bulk garbage lot at 830 Racine St. when heavy smoke and fire were observed coming from the cab, according to a release from the Racine Fire Department.

'Harmless' substance leaks into neighborhood after fire at Oshkosh industrial plant

Firefighters say a white residue that has emerged in a neighborhood after a fire is harmless. The Oshkosh Fire Department says it was called to a fire at A.P. Nonweiler, 3221 Hwy. A, just after 6 p.m. Monday. A.P. Nonweiler makes industrial coatings and paints. The building's sprinkler system contained the fire, and firefighters were able to put it out quickly.

One person killed in Pepin County grass fire

One person died in a Monday afternoon fire that burned a small barn, tin outbuilding and a couple acres of grass in Pepin County. The Pepin County sheriff’s office withheld the victim’s identity on Monday night, pending notification of family. Emergency workers were called at 3:03 p.m. for a fire with possible fatality at N7050 Hayes Road in the town of Lima.

18 people sent to the hospital after ammonia leak in Abbotsford

18 people were taken to the hospital after the ammonia spill at Abbyland Foods in Abbotsford Monday evening. According to Chief Bert Nitzke from the Central Fire & EMS District, one of those people is a firefighter. He says the 18 people were transported for everything from fainting to respiratory stress.

Fire at apartment building in Glendale leads to $50K in damage, 1 taken to hospital

Firefighters on Tuesday morning, April 24 responded to the scene of an apartment fire on Mohawk Avenue in Glendale. The call came in shortly before 2:00 a.m. When crews arrived on scene, they found smoke and fire coming from a first floor unit. In addition, one resident from the affect unit was found outside requiring medical attention.

Grass fire shows late winter weather doesn't delay wildfire season

Holmen Fire Chief stepping down

Holmen's fire chief won't renew his contract when it expires in August according to the village president. After two years, Paul Menches told the Holmen Area Fire District Association Board Thursday night that he's decided to leave the department as of the middle of August, Holmen Village President Nancy Proctor told WXOW.

Man flown to Milwaukee-area hospital following late night accident

A man was flown to a Milwaukee-area hospital after a one-car crash late Saturday night at Highway 165 and Sheridan Road. The crash occurred at 9:51 p.m. and involved a man believed to be the driver of the vehicle who had to be extricated, according to David Wilkinson, Pleasant Prairie Fire Department assistant chief.

Campers evacuated from Lake Wissota State Park due to grass fires

VIDEO: Authorities were forced to fully evacuate Lake Wissota State Park Sunday afternoon in order to fight several grass fires. Officials told News 18 there were a few campers at the park at the time, but said no one was injured. They don't know what started the fires, or how many acres they have burned so far, but the Department of Natural Resources is sending officers from Ladysmith to help put them out.

Health care professionals get hands-on firefighter training as part of new partnership with Madison fire department

House fire in Two Rivers causes $75,000 in damage

Heavy flames and smoke coming from the second floor of a bedroom window, that's what Two Rivers firefighters saw when they arrived at a home on 27th Street Saturday afternoon. Officials say the call came in 13 minutes before 3 p.m. and officials managed to put the fire out quickly. Firefighters were on scene for an hour and say those inside the home got out before officials arrived.

One person hospitalized after fire in Cedarburg, cause still under investigation

VIDEO: One person is in the hospital for smoke inhalation after a fire at a home in Cedarburg on Thursday. Crews were called to the 5700 block of W. Spring Street just before 12:00 p.m. Wednesday. Investigators say the person was able to get out of the house but then re-entered the building before firefighters arrived and was overcome by smoke.

Firefighters in Wauwatosa save three-year-old girl's life

A special visitor stopped by the Wauwatosa Fire Department Wednesday to say "thank you." A photo shows 3-year-old Charlie and her mother with the firefighters and paramedics who saved Charlie's life. Two weeks ago, she was choking on some food and stopped breathing. First responders were able to get her breathing again and took her to Children's Hospital.

Woman rescued from Fond du Lac River

Thursday afternoon Fond du Lac Fire Rescue was called to 12th Street over the Fond du Lac for a report of a person in the water. When crews arrived they put on cold water rescue suits and went into the water and attached a rope around the woman so they could get her out of the water and up a snow covered riverbank.

EMS station discussed for Windsor

An ambulance station in Windsor remains a topic of discussion among officials, but the project is likely several years away from advancing. According to DeForest Windsor Fire and EMS Chief Steve LaFeber, the department operates one to two ambulances – depending on available staff – to cover the district’s 98 square miles.

Charity firefighter hockey tournament to start in Madison

VIDEO: Some local heroes are hitting the ice for a good cause. "Fire on Ice" is a charity hockey tournament benefiting the Make-A-Wish foundation. Firefighters, police officers and EMS professionals in the area will be squaring off at the Madison Ice Arena April 20-22. The event is in its seventh year and it has been able to grant eight wishes for local children who have life-threatening medical conditions.

Onalaska firefighters train on new fire engine

VIDEO: The Onalaska Fire Department has a new tool to fight fires. Three years ago, the City of Onalaska saw a need. "The truck that this replaced was a 1992 Peterbilt," said Jim Netwal, firefighter at Onalaska Fire Department. "So, that was a good truck, but old and breaking down." Taxpayers and city officials decided to make a new fire engine a priority.
