Superior officials: Refinery incident highlights need to upgrade hazmat response

Superior officials say they’d like the state to upgrade their hazmat team designation in order to access funding and resources to respond to hazardous materials in the wake of explosions and fires at the Husky Energy oil refinery. In the last decade, Wisconsin conducted a review of the state’s hazardous materials response, which created a tiered system of teams with various levels of capabilities.

Follow Up: Coworker who filed complaint against Mosinee fire officials speaks out

Madison: Man arrested after setting trucks on fire

A man was arrested for arson near the east side of Madison early Wednesday morning. Two parked trucks were set on fire in front of a house on Jacobson Avenue just after 4:30 a.m., according to the Madison Police Department. The 51-year-old homeowner discovered accelerants had been poured near the front of his house.

Woman arrested in Waterloo RV fire

A Waterloo woman has been arrested for allegedly setting fire to a recreational vehicle parked behind her home last week. Sharice Demetria Schoonover, 25, of 325 Reber Ave., was arrested Tuesday for first-degree arson. Her bond was set at $25,000. Police said the fire followed an ongoing dispute with roommate Damarius O’Neal.

Riverside third-grader earns ride in Fond du Lac fire truck

As the top fundraiser for the Riverside Elementary School’s Walk-a-Thon, Abigail Hanke, a third-grader, earned a ride to school on one of Fond du Lac’s fire trucks. Abigail was picked up at her home where she boarded the fire truck and saw firsthand all the technology that firemen use when responding to an emergency, and could feel how it is to ride in a truck this size.

UW-Madison won’t release report on rescue service involved in windsurfer’s death

University of Wisconsin-Madison officials declined to release an administrative review that led them to shift the management of a Lake Mendota rescue service scrutinized after the death of a windsurfer in a collision with a rescue boat a year ago. The UW-Madison Police Department announced Wednesday that it had taken over operation of UWPD Lake Rescue and Safety.

Around 30 displaced in Milwaukee apartment fire

Around 30 people were displaced after a fire broke out in an apartment building in Milwaukee Wednesday night. Authorities say it happened near 39th and Hopkins. Firefighters say the fire was located on the first floor of the building. Crews initially were told several people were trapped inside, but after searching the building, one person was found inside and was able to walk out without assistance.

DNR pilots get bird's-eye view of wildfires, rising waters

Small explosions heard during Marathon County structure fire

VIDEO: A two-car garage burned to the ground Tuesday in southwestern Marathon County and investigators have not been able to determine a cause. Chippewa County Board lauds dispatcher who won award

A Chippewa County dispatcher has won an award for telecommunicator of the year. Wade Davis was given the award by Wisconsin Public Safety Communications. Davis was honored at the Chippewa County Board meeting on Tuesday, and the board gave him a standing ovation. Chippewa County Sheriff Jim Kowalczyk said Davis is a hard worker and liked by everyone in the department.

Update: Bodies found in home west of Neenah identified as Jeremy Wallenfang and Ashley Mielke

VIDEO: The bodies found last week in a burned home west of Neenah have been identified as 36-year-old Jeremy Wallenfang, of Neenah, and 27-year-old Ashley Mielke, of Appleton. The cause of death has yet to be determined because both bodies were "significantly degraded" by the fire, the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday.

Proposed 82-unit apartment complex in Beaver Dam features no sprinkler system

The Beaver Dam Common Council on Monday approved a conceptual design for a new 82-unit apartment complex that has drawn concerns from the fire chief over its lack of sprinkler systems and access points, allowing the project to move forward. The new complex would be near Spring Street, north of the Spring Lake apartment complex near Kohl’s and between two older subdivisions.

2 rescued from roof in fire at Madison apartment building, officials say

The Madison Fire Department is investigating an apartment fire in the 200 block of North Street where two people were rescued from roof areas, officials said. The Madison Police Department said around midnight Tuesday, officers and firefighters responded to a fire at an eight-unit residential building operated by the nonprofit organization Porchlight.

Greenville Looking to Build New Fire and Safety Building

Superior oil refinery fires spark health concerns over soil

People in south Superior are concerned about whether it’s safe to plant vegetables or work with soil after a series of explosions and fires at the Husky Energy oil refinery. University of Wisconsin-Extension officials are looking to calm people’s fears by seeking out soil tests. Some have questioned whether people may be at risk due to last week’s fires, including Steven Sternberg, an associate professor of chemical engineering at the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Okauchee Fire Department member Dan Ferrise will retire after more than three decades on the department

A love of baseball led 19-year-old Dan Ferrise to join the Okauchee Fire Department. A love of firefighting kept him there for more than three decades. Ferrise is retiring May 19 as president of the department. He joined the department in 1982 so he could play ball on the department ream with his father, Frank, who had joined OFD in the late 1970s.
