The city of Merrill has appointed Josh Klug as fire chief. Klug most recently served as Wausau Fire deputy chief and has also been chief at Mosinee. A man was rescued after he jumped into the Fox River in downtown Green Bay this morning. Green Bay Metro Fire says they were called to an area on the Main Street/Nitschke Bridge just after 5. When crews arrived they found the man in the water, struggling to stay afloat. A controlled burn in the Town of Oregon got out of control Wednesday evening and ignited a structure fire, officials said. Firefighters with the Oregon Area Fire and EMS District were dispatched to the structure fire around 5:45 p.m. at 585 Tipperary Road. A veteran firefighter in a small community in northwestern Wisconsin has died following a response. The U.S. Fire Administration on Thursday announced the line-of-duty death of 69-year-old Spooner volunteer firefighter Philip H. Neubich, who was a 38-year veteran of the fire service. Fire crews responded to a grass fire off County Road O in the Town of Marathon Wednesday afternoon. SAFER Chief Matt Savage says the call came in before 4 PM. The Superior Fire Department was rocked last week by the loss of one of their own. Battalion Chief Erik Sutton, 46, who retired in March after serving for 20 years on the department, died April 18. The cause of death was not released.
