Family displaced after New London fire

A family is displaced after a house fire Thursday night. It happened around 10:00 p.m. when the fire department was called to the home on South Mill Street. Firefighters found the kitchen of the home in flames. A woman was home when the fire started, along with her three children. Her husband was not home at the time.

Firefighters quickly extinguish fire in Fitchburg apartment complex wall

First responders quickly extinguished a small fire in a Fitchburg apartment complex wall Thursday night, according to a news release from the Fitchburg Fire Department. The Fitchburg Fire Department responded to a reported alarm activation reported around 6:18 p.m. Thursday at 2021 Greenway Cross. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they requested a full structure fire response after using thermal imaging cameras to find a smoldering fire in a basement wall.

Follow Up: Promoted Oconto firefighters get new badges

Three career firefighters received badges reflecting their promotions at the March 12 pinning ceremony hosted by Oconto Fire and Rescue Department. Josh Bostedt is now deputy chief of OFRD, a new position that is second in command of the department and has decision-making authority when the chief is not available.

Trial date pushed back for Pleasant Prairie man accused of attempted homicide in arson fire

The trial is being pushed back for a former firefighter accused of trying to kill his aunt in a series of arson fires. Keith Kauppi, 30, of Pleasant Prairie, is charged with two counts of attempted first-degree homicide. He is accused of setting fire to the couch where his 70-year-old aunt was sleeping at his parent’s Pleasant Prairie home in June 2017.

Hales Corners Fire Captain accused of leaving post, sexually harassing coworker

The Hales Corners Fire Chief wants one of his captains fired. Captain John Wagner is accused of sexual harassment and jeopardizing public safety. With 24 years of fire and emergency medical experience, he'd been hired as a fire prevention captain for the Hales Corners Fire Department. A year and a half later, Chief Martin Freibergs filed disciplinary charges against him.

Oconto's first female firefighter realizes childhood dream

Tabitha Vande Voort first wanted to become a firefighter after a tree fell on her father while she was still in grade school. That desire solidified about 12 years later, thanks to a few quiet words of encouragement from the man who now leads the Oconto Fire and Rescue Department. Vande Voort is now, another decade later, one of eight full-time career firefighters for the Department.

Fire damages Chippewa Falls home

A house on the East Hill of Chippewa Falls sustained damage Monday after a power line reportedly fell on an electrical box, causing a fire. The fire at 1120 Therbrook St. was reported at 1:30 p.m. Monday, said Chippewa Falls battalion chief Lee Douglas. Douglas said flames were visible coming from the side of the residence when crews arrived.

He blew up his Beaver Dam apartment in 2018; Police have no idea why.

Benjamin Morrow always came to work at a Beaver Dam food processing plant smelling like moth balls and wearing clothes with tiny holes in them. He grinned strangely while scrolling through his smartphone, and he scoured the internet at work for information about guns, ammunition and chemicals. Then a shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida, left 17 students and staff dead, and Morrow started talking about the possibility of a mass assault in their workplace.

De Pere Fire Department: Dryer believed to be cause of fire

De Pere Fire Department says crews were called to a home on Bunker Hill Drive. De Pere Fire Department's Assistant Chief Rich Annen said the fire happened around 7:30 Monday night. Smoke was visible when the first truck arrived on scene. Firefighters say they also saw flames coming from the back of the home.

Racine Fire Department reports uptick in CO alarm calls

City Fire Department officials report that the department has experienced a large increase in carbon monoxide alarm calls lately. Lt. John Magnus of the department's Fire Prevention Bureau advises residents that most carbon monoxide alarms are only designed for seven to 10 years use. There is a chirp that sounds to alert residents when the unit reaches the end of its recommended service life; this chirp will sound every 30 seconds.

Osseo Fire Department calls for a pre-planning meeting for a community support group

Osseo community members made plans to form an emergency event community support group. Locals and business owners in Osseo held a pre-planning meeting at the Osseo Rural Fire Department where they discussed a way for volunteers to help in the event of an emergency. With the opening of the new Fire Station and emergency events, such as the forty car pile-up on I-94 in February, the Fire Department is looking for community members to offer a helping hand.

The Hartland Fire Department is in a state of dysfunction, study says

The Hartland Fire Department is in a state of dysfunction, but also that it is operationally ready to respond to emergencies, according to a study. The department was audited by Five Bugle Training & Consulting to evaluate the fire department since Fire Chief Dave Dean took over in 2014. "It is the opinion of the consultant that the Hartland Fire Department is in a state of dysfunction regarding leadership practices and creating a culture of inclusiveness," the audit concluded.

Dane County: Fire departments receive training, equipment for ag emergencies

Dane County may be the second-most populous county in Wisconsin and home to the state’s capital, but it doesn’t exempt the area from the occasional agricultural accident. It’s why the Dane County Farm Bureau and multiple agents of Rural Mutual Insurance Co. found it important to sponsor a recent ag rescue training, with the Farm Bureau fronting two-thirds of the cost for 10 area fire departments to participate.

Total loss: Fire destroys home near 13th Avenue and High Street in Union Grove

Firefighters on Monday morning, March 18 responded to the scene of house fire in Union Grove. It happened near 13th Avenue and High Street. According to officials, a neighbor notified authorities shortly before 5 a.m. of flames coming from the windows of the home. The neighbor also indicated he didn’t see anyone coming out.

Firefighters install free smoke detectors in Eau Claire homes

Members of the Eau Claire Fire and Rescue team are rolling up their sleeves to help install free smoke detectors donated by the Red Cross. "Assess the house to see what detectors you have, if they are still good, if they are in a good location and then figure out where to put the new ones," said Eau Claire Fire Inspector Jason Knecht.

‘He was family:’ Milwaukee Fire Department mourning loss of lieutenant who lost fight with cancer

A Milwaukee paramedic's life was honored on Saturday, March 16 after he lost his battle with cancer last week. While he wasn't killed on the job, his passing is still considered a line-of-duty death. Paramedic Lieutenant Odell Minor served for the Milwaukee Fire Department for more than 24 years. He's been described as a kind soul and good mentor for young paramedics.
