La Crosse firefighters respond to at least the 14th fire since new year

The La Crosse Fire Department responded to a fire at an apartment building Friday night. Firefighters got the call around 9:45 p.m. for a fire at 918 Denton Street. According to La Crosse Fire Chief Ken Gilliam, firefighters were able to get everyone out of the two-story building safely and put out the fire fairly quickly.

Merrill Fire Department recruiting residents to dig out fire hydrants

The Merrill Fire Department is asking residents to help them dig out snow-covered fire hydrants next weekend. With more than three feet of snow falling across central Wisconsin in February so far and more snow on the way this weekend, firefighters are concerned they will have a hard time finding fire hydrants and will then have to spend valuable time digging them out at the scene of a fire.

Hales Corners firefighters unable to respond to a car fire a mile away from the department

The Hales Corners Fire Department is investigating why three on-duty personnel were unable to respond with a fire engine to a January car fire. Village Administrator Sandra Kulik said that one the morning of Jan. 16, three part-time firefighters who didn’t have certification for driving a fire engine were on duty when a 59-year-old woman reported her car was on fire.

Three men rescued by rope pulley system after staircase collapses in Appleton bar

Three men were rescued Friday morning after they became trapped in the sub-basement of a downtown Appleton bar. At about 1:50 a.m., the Appleton Fire Department was called to The Durty Leprechaun, 343 W. College Ave., for a report that a stairwell had collapsed and trapped three men in a sub-basement, the department said.

After 46 years, Sun Prairie firefighter retires

A man known as a pillar of the Sun Prairie Fire Department is stepping down after generations of work. Arnie Kleven first joined the department in 1972. Kleven worked across the street form station 1 before he took the job. He worked at GT and would hear the fire sirens go off, prompting him to poke his head out to see where they were going.

La Crosse Fire Department is busy to start 2019

The La Crosse Fire Department has responded to 13 fires just in 2019 alone. "It's been abnormally busy for the last two months," said Assistant Chief Jeff Murphy. Despite recent record-setting snowfalls, officials say most of the fires have not been related to the cold weather. "Most of the calls, most of these fires have been related to careless smoking, electrical, various other causes," said Murphy.

Plan to add additional shower to Vernon Fire Department proposed

Boy rescued after falling into Lake Michigan near Racine Yacht Club

After a frigid 15 minutes or more in the water, emergency workers rescued a 15-year-old boy who fell into Lake Michigan Wednesday evening. According to a preliminary investigation, the Racine County Sheriff’s Office reported that the boy and a 16-year-old friend were walking on the icy shore when the ice underneath them gave way, dropping the younger boy into the lake.

Promotions approved for Kenosha police, fire departments

Several promotions within the Kenosha Police and Kenosha Fire departments were approved by the city’s Police and Fire Commission Tuesday. Kenosha Police promotions included Patrick Patton from sergeant to interim lieutenant and Tadas Zukauskas and Michael Madsen from patrol officers to interim sergeants.

A new tool to help save lives: Portage County EMS gets PulsePoint

Portage County is participating in a new app to speed up assistance for people having a heart emergency. The app, called PulsePoint, is designed to alert app users and first responders to people nearby who are experiencing cardiac arrest. It also helps you find the nearest automated external defibrillators (AED).

CT Scans donated to Kenosha Fire Department

Recognizing the cancer epidemic that firefighters are facing, MH Medical Imaging Company has donated 31 low-dose radiation CT scans to the Kenosha Fire Department. These scans are often not covered by insurance and are a useful tool in detecting cancer. "They were able are able to pick up cancer at a much earlier stage than a chest x-ray," said Dan Paulson with MH Imaging.

After months of being short-staffed, the Rice Lake Fire Department is now asking the city council to revisit its decision to cut a full-time firefighter position. While the council says that decision was caused by a budget deficit, officials with the department say something needs to be done to ensure the safety of the community.

Three found dead in house fire in Waukesha

An early morning fire killed three people, injured three others and substantially damaged a town of Waukesha home on Tuesday, Feb. 19. The Waukesha County Sheriff's Department announced the deaths Tuesday afternoon in an updated news release. Police did not identify the victims, but said they were an adult and two adolescents.

Fire crews rescue injured worker stuck on upper floor of Wauwautosa construction site

Fire crews deployed a bucket truck to rescue an injured worker who had slipped on the third floor of a Wauwautosa construction site on Monday afternoon. A worker for a subcontractor of the Milwaukee firm CG Schmidt fell and was injured while working on the third floor of a project at 10401 Innovation Drive in Wauwautosa, said Mike Abuls, chief operating officer at CG Schmidt.

Business owner sues Chippewa Fire District over dome use

William Kleich, owner of Loopy’s Saloon and Grill in the ntown of Wheaton, has filed a lawsuit against the Chippewa Fire District in an effort to allow the volleyball dome at his facility to continue operating 240 days a year without seeking a new permit. Kleich filed the lawsuit in Chippewa County Court on Monday.

‘Substantial property damage:’ 2 injured after house fire in Waukesha

83-year-old woman who ‘spent her life caring for others’ dies in house fire in Town of Delavan

An 83-year-old woman died in house fire on Linn Road in the Town of Delavan Sunday night, Feb. 17. The flames were so intense, firefighters right across the street couldn't save the woman's life. The call came in shortly before 6 p.m. after a relative noticed smoke coming from the house. When crews arrived on scene at Linn Road and Sage Road, they found smoke and flames coming from the residence.

Community service award given in honor of fallen Madison firefighter

Members of the Sable Flames firefighter group in Madison are creating a new community service award to honor Richard Garner, who died in the line of duty April 1, 2018. The award, given at the annual Second Alarm Scholarship Benefit Dance, will carry on the legacy of a man whose friends describe him as a gentle giant.
