Beloit fire captain's transplant story featured in UW Health program

Helping save lives is a passion for Beloit Fire Department Capt. Mike Rosario, but he was in jeopardy of having to give up that dream as he battled chronic kidney disease. That's when his brother and fellow firefighters stepped up to help him receive a transplant. And now he's becoming a statewide advocate for others, in coordination with a University of Wisconsin Health system program.

Madison Common Council says no to buying new ambulance for fire department

Potential site identified for new South Side fire station in La Crosse

The La Crosse Fire Department has picked out an ideal location for a new South Side fire station, but fire chief Ken Gilliam says there are still some hurdles to leap before finalizing a plan. The city has filed a request to rezone 5248 S. 33rd St., located at 33rd Street and Mormon Coulee Road, to allow for a fire station.

Menomonee Falls Police and Fire Commission will use executive search firm to find new fire chief

The Menomonee Falls Police and Fire Commission has taken the first step toward hiring a fire chief, agreeing Nov. 11 to use an executive search firm to conduct the search. Commissioners will choose one of two regional search firms: Public Administration Associates LLC of Osh Kosh or GovHRUSA of Northbrook, Illinois.

Follow Up: MPD seeks man wanted in shooting that wounded off-duty firefighter: ‘It shouldn’t happen’

Milwaukee police released new information on Tuesday, Nov. 12 about the 25-year-old man sought in connection with the shooting of an off-duty firefighter near 105th Street and Cameron Avenue on Monday. The shooter was described as black, standing between 5'9" and 5'11" tall, with light skin. Officials said he was wearing a ski mask.

Off-duty Milwaukee firefighter shot in attempted armed robbery

An off-duty Milwaukee firefighter was shot at a home near North 105th Street and West Cameron Avenue around 5:35 p.m. Monday. The 35-year-old firefighter was shot in the thigh, and is expected to be okay. Police have not confirmed what led to the shooting. Sources said the suspect was trying to steal the victim's car at the time of the shooting.

Madison's fire chief: City falls short in prompt ambulance response, needs ninth ambulance

Madison’s fire chief is hoping the Common Council approves a budget amendment for a ninth ambulance to lower the response time for the city’s Southeast Side. Madison Fire Chief Steven Davis wrote in his blog on Monday that the city falls short in providing “prompt ambulance transport” to the Southeast side, despite there being a newly built Fire Station 14 in the area.

Firefighters rescue dog from Madison rooftop using dog treats

Madison firefighters used dog treats to help a dog stuck on the rooftop of a three-story multi-family home Friday night. According to Madison Fire Department Public Information Officer Cynthia Schuster, firefighters were called to the building on the 100 block of North Butler Street around 11:30 a.m.

Fire damages vacant building near Appleton and Burleigh in Milwaukee

Firefighters on Monday morning, Nov. 11 responded to the scene of a fire at a vacant building near Appleton Avenue and Burleigh Street in Milwaukee. The call came in just after 1 a.m. The battalion chief said there were several fires happening at the same time. Firefighters used forced entry to get in -- and were able to get the fire under control in 30 minutes.

Bangor family displaced after home destroyed in early morning fire

A family was able to evacuate their Bangor home Saturday morning after they were alerted by a smoke detector to a fire. The incident happened at a home on Wolf Road. Bangor-Burns Fire Department Chief Bob Rueckheim said firefighters were paged to the house fire around 1 a.m. A husband and wife were inside at the time.

Horicon: Home in Dodge County catches fire, everyone gets out safe

No one was hurt after a house fire in Horicon Thursday night. According to the Horicon Fire Department, crews were called to 7063 East St. around 7:30 p.m. for a chimney fire. Crews found heavy smoke coming from the attic and upstairs. They discovered the fire was coming from the floor on the second story of the home.

Truck fire damages nearby buildings in Burke

A pickup truck fire in the Town of Burke caused tens of thousands of dollars in damage Thursday when flames reached nearby structures, the Sun Prairie Volunteer Fire Dept. said. The truck was already fully engulfed in flames and heavy black smoke was pouring out when firefighters arrived in the 3000 block of Seminary Spring Road, the fire dept.

Mulitple firefighters respond to Shawano County house fire

Fire destroyed a home on County Highway Z, just east of Aniwa in Shawano County. Birnamwood Fire Chief Randy Berger told NewsChannel 7 the fire started around 1:30 Thursday afternoon. He said there were no injuries but an unknown number of pets may have died in the fire. The home is a total loss. An excavator was called in to break down the home and help put out the flaming structure.

With a nudge, Port Washington Common Council moves firehouse plan forward

After months of debate, the Port Washington Common Council on Tuesday agreed to seek proposals from architectural firms to design a new fire station and renovate the existing firehouse. Aldermen voted 6-1, with Ald. Mike Gasper dissenting, to send out a request for proposals after Mayor Marty Becker, a former member of the Police and Fire Commission and a proponent of the new fire station, said he would not accept any more delays.

Officials: Lack of hydrants makes for 4-hr fight at corn drying silo in Fitchburg

A lack of fire hydrants made for an hourslong fire fight at a corn drying silo in Fitchburg Tuesday night, officials said. Dane County dispatch said it received a report of a fire on Irish Lane at 9:45 p.m. The Fitchburg Fire Department said the first arriving units, including a Fitchburg police officer, reported seeing smoke coming from the silo, indicating there was active fire, but flames were not visible outside of the silo.

Explosion caught on camera caused by car running in Westport garage

VIDEO: An explosion in the town of Westport drew first responders from multiple departments Wednesday morning. Crews from Cross Plains, Middleton, Verona and Waunakee were sent to a home at 4723 Sumac Road around 8:30 a.m. Dispatchers with Dane County said they received a call about windows being blown out of a garage.

Fire damages apartment building in south Milwaukee

Firefighters on Wednesday morning, Nov. 6 responded to the scene of an apartment fire in South Milwaukee. It happened near Drexel Boulevard and Pennsylvania Avenue around 5:11 a.m. Officials say the fire started inside an exterior wall — and moved up inside the rear wall space into the attic. No additional details have been released — including the cause of the fire or if any injuries were sustained.

Fire in Madison family's 'junk drawer' likely started by 9-volt battery

Most of us have one—a “junk drawer” for all the miscellaneous items that do not belong anywhere else in our homes. One Wisconsin family’s junk drawer, however, turned out to be a fire hazard. Last Friday, homeowners in Madison noticed smoke coming from a drawer in their kitchen, according to the Madison Fire Department.

Update: Community mourns loss of Union Grove-Yorkville firefighter; Remembrance set for Sunday, Nov. 10

First responders across the state are remembering a local firefighter who died over the weekend. Brian Serdynski leaves behind a wife and three kids. "He was one of the first ones to come down and be at the firehouse and one of the last ones to leave," said Assistant Fire Chief Ryan Johnson. Johnson says Brian was with the Union Grove-Yorkville Fire Department for 18 years.

Union Grove High School students raise $10K for fire department

The students of the Union Grove High School chapter of the National Honor Society went into the community to raise $10,000 to help purchase protective gear for the Union Grove-Yorkville Fire Department Tactical Response Team. Each year, members of the Union Grove High School National Honor Society select group projects, in addition to individual service opportunities, that allow the members to positively impact their community.
