La Crosse, Holmen to extend fire agreement through end of year, referendum coming

The La Crosse and Holmen Area Fire Departments will continue to fight fires together at least through the end of the year, and a referendum is likely coming this fall to possibly increase public safety funding for some of the communities involved. The communities entered into a shared service agreement last summer, which is set to expire at the end of the month.

New Illinois fire chief to also serve in Wisconsin communities

Jason Griffin worked day one Thursday of his dual role as South Beloit Fire Chief and as a deputy for the City of Beloit Fire Department in Wisconsin. New grant to help bolster Onalaska high school fire academy

Fire departments across the state are struggling with recruiting and retaining firefighters. When Chief Troy Gudie joined the Onalaska Fire Department in 1989, the staff consisted of 36 paid on-call firefighters. That number has dwindled over the last thirty years, leading Gudie to come up with new ways to recruit fresh faces.

Burlington crash: hot air balloon vs. train

VIDEO: Flight for Life was called to the scene of a crash involving a hot air balloon and a train in Burlington Wednesday night, June 1. The scene of the crash was behind Love Inc. near Calumet Road in Burlington. The three adult occupants sustained life-threatening injuries. Flight for Life was requested and transported two of the three patients to Froedtert Hospital for treatment.

Five finalists named for La Crosse fire chief

Five people are named as finalists to become the next chief of the La Crosse Fire Department. The city released the names of the candidates Wednesday afternoon. None are currently with the department. Only one is from the area. Assistant Fire Chief Les Norin of the Onalaska Fire Department is one of the five.

Marshfield Fire and Rescue Celebrates Partnership With Mid-State Technical College

Sleep study focuses on Superior firefighters

Firefighters are in the middle of a sleep study being conducted by the University of Wisconsin-Superior’s Health and Human Performance Department. The goal of the study is to improve firefighter health. Smart watches worn by Superior crew members 24 hours a day, seven days a week are gathering data about their heart rate, blood pressure and sleep patterns at home and on the job.

Pittsville Fire Chief Named Hero of Hope by Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation

Town of Beloit receives multi-million dollar grant to demolish, rebuild fire station

The Town of Beloit has received a $7 million grant throught the Neighborhood Investment Fund which will be used to rebuild the township’s fire station on Inman Parkway. Neighborhood Investment Fund is an allocation of $650 million to invest in community building and recovery statewide. The program was announced in August of 2021 and is administered by the Wisconsin Department of Administration.

Onalaska: Collaborative effort is taken to help combat firefighter shortages

Local fire departments are experiencing a shortage of volunteer and full time firefighters. In an effort to combat the shortage, the Department of Safety and Professional Services awarded Western Technical College $22,593 at the Onalaska Fire Department in an effort to spark high school students' interest in becoming a fire fighter.

Honoring servicemen and women killed in the line of duty at Appleton Memorial Day Parade

This is the first time that Appleton is back to a fully in-person schedule of events in years. Superior Fire Department fills assistant fire chief position

The fire department has a new assistant fire chief. Howard Huber, a 16-year veteran of the Superior Fire Department, stepped into the job May 2. The new position is 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, instead of the firefighters' schedule of 48 hours on, 96 hours off. “I’m learning what weekends are,” Huber said.

Fire at landfill near Johnson Creek extinguished; cause under investigation

Crews are investigating what caused a fire at the Deer Track Park landfill near Johnson Creek Monday afternoon. Capt. Craig Cahill with the Johnson Creek Fire Department said the fire broke out around 1 p.m. The fire covered an area roughly two acres in size, he said. Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames in roughly an hour.

Crews battle house fire in Brodhead

A house went up in flames on Sunday evening in Brodhead, according to authorities. According to the Rock County Sheriff’s Office, the fire started around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday at a home on West Dorner Road in Brodhead. Authorities say overnight the fire rekindled creating hot spots that crews needed to put out Monday morning.

Kitchen fire in De Pere home kills three pets, causes $100,000 in damages

A fire that started in a kitchen killed three pets Thursday night, De Pere Fire Rescue said Friday. At around 9 p.m. Thursday, dispatchers received a call about a fire at a home on Indy Court. First responders arrived within minutes and contained the fire to the kitchen, the fire department said. All of the residents of the house safely made it outside.

Lipski Legacy: Celebrating 110 years of family firefighters in Milwaukee

One family is celebrating more than a century of service to Milwaukee in 2022. The Lipski family has been serving in the Milwaukee Fire Department for 110 years. It started back in 1912 when current Chief Aaron Lipski's great-grandfather's oldest brother started at Engine No 21 off of Palmer and Lloyd Street.

Beaver Dam school bus fire extinguished, no injuries reported

The Beaver Dam Fire Department was called to a school bus fire Thursday afternoon, May 26. The fire was reported behind a gas station near Crystal Lake Park just after 1 p.m. Before the fire department arrived, a Badger Bus employee tried to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher. Other workers moved several other buses that were nearby – preventing the fire from spreading.

Acid leak in Stevens Point Contained

Hazmat teams are responding to a developing situation in Stevens Point. According to the Portage County Sheriff’s Office per the Stevens Point Fire Chief, crews responded to a sulfuric acid leak Thursday night. The initial page said the size of the leak was 400 gallons in size. No injuries have been reported.

Evansville grain fire does $850,000 in damage

Nearly twenty agencies responded to a Rock Co. grain dryer Wednesday evening to help put down the flames of a fire tearing through the 100-foot structure.
