National Fire Prevention Week kicks off in Milwaukee

VIDEO: National Fire Prevention Week kicked off Monday morning. Milwaukee second graders from Franklin Pierce Elementary joined Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and Ronald McDonald to kick off a week long series of events at Milwaukee Fire Department’s Survive Alive House. It’s a mock home that fills with smoke and children have to figure out how to get out safely, even if that means climbing out of a window.

Follow Up: Osseo Fire Department looks to build new station

Milwaukee firefighter loses part of finger using saw at fire

A firefighter lost part of a finger while helping to battle a two-alarm fire on Milwaukee's north side, officials said. The fire was reported late Monday night at a duplex near 4th Street and Concordia Avenue. Flames then spread to a neighboring duplex. Police told WISN 12 News the firefighter was injured while using a saw on the roof.

Vote could improve Osseo Rural Fire Station

Osseo Rural Fire Department Chief Nels Gunderson slipped between two firetrucks parked close together, then later pointed to damage a truck received when hit by another in the crowded station. “This was never designed to be a fire station, and we just don't have the room we need,” Gunderson said while explaining the need for a new, larger, better located facility.

Chief: Quick call from passersby averts worse Baraboo home-fire situation

Arcing electrical wires sparked an attic fire that damaged a Baraboo home Sunday morning. Baraboo Fire Chief Kevin Stieve said the fire caused extensive damage to the home’s roof and moderate smoke damage to its main level. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the main body of the fire, which left moderate water damage.

Three Lakes Pumpkin Fest raises funds for fire department

Kenosha Fire Department retiree travels the globe as rescue nurse

Most retirees travel for pleasure. Rich Meeker travels to save lives. Some 85 percent of Meeker’s rescue nurse cases take him abroad to care for patients and bring them back to the United States for care closer to home. Meeker, 58, is retired from the Kenosha Fire Department. A registered nurse for 35 years, Meeker began working under contract with On Call International Inc.

New Germantown Ordinance Could Save Firefighter Lives

VIDEO: A new ordinance in Germantown is aimed at saving firefighter lives. The new rules require buildings with lightweight roofs and floors, which are more prone to collapse, to post signs. It’s a requirement for commercial, industrial and three or more unit buildings. “I am confident that this, these markings, is gonna save firefighter lives,” said Germantown Fire Chief Gary Weiss.

Poynette woman faces arson charge in shed fire

The fire and the damage were not in question, but attorneys argued Thursday morning over whether it was a case of felony arson or just a bad idea that got out of hand, with up to 40 years in prison being the difference. Kimberly Schmudlach, 48, of Poynette, appeared before Judge Todd Hepler for a preliminary hearing, charged with felony arson and misdemeanor neglect of a child.

Fire at Ebert Enterprises near Algoma

Firefighters from as far north as Sturgeon Bay and as far south as Mishicot were on the scene of a barn fire at Ebert Enterprises, a large farm near Algoma, on Thursday afternoon. The fire in a barn filled with straw was threatening other structures on the farm, which is the site of the 2017 Farm Technology Days, including the homestead and at least one other building at N6939 County D in the town of Pierce.

Firefighters to honor fallen heroes at Wisconsin State Firefighters Memorial

Fire causes $100,000 in damage to east Madison home

PHOTO: The Madison Fire Department says two people and seven animals are displaced from their home after a fire caused approximately $100,000 worth of damage. Neighbors noticed the house, on Madison's east side in the 5600 block of Rustic Woods Drive, on fire around 10:45 a.m. and called 911. First responders reported that the garage was fully engulfed in flames, and extended approximately 15-20 feet from the garage's west wall.

Beloit man injured Wednesday in industrial accident

A Beloit man suffered a serious leg injury after his leg got caught between a 700-pound pipe and a scrap-grinding machine Wednesday night at a Janesville business. Firefighters and police responded at 11:45 p.m. to the industrial accident at North American Pipe, 210 S. Arch St., said Lt. Charles Aagaard of the Janesville Police Department.

Evansville firefighters battle downtown restaurant & bar fire

VIDEO: Firefighters spent a few hours battling a fire at a downtown Evansville business late Wednesday night into Thursday morning. The Evansville Fire Department was called to Night Owl Food and Spirits around 10:00 p.m. They needed help from more than a dozen other agencies. There were no injuries in the fire, but it took about three hours for fire crews to put the fire out.

Follow Up: Uncapped gas line, homeowner error blamed for Fitchburg house explosion

The cause of a massive explosion last month in Fitchburg that leveled a home and scattered debris over a half-mile radius, severely damaging several other homes, may be tied to two mistakes made five years apart. Madison-based attorney Dan Rottier said the first oversight occurred in 2011 when his client, Cheryl Drive homeowner Brian Grittner, had his gas-powered dryer replaced with an electric one, and the dryer installer failed to cap the gas line during the job, Rottier told 27 News on Tuesday.

Dousman proposes merging fire, ambulance service with Oconomowoc

In an effort to cut costs once a fire and ambulance agreement expires next year, the Dousman Fire District has proposed merging with the Oconomowoc Fire Department to create a new district that it says will save the communities it covers $2.3 million over 20 years. Officials from the Dousman Fire District shared a proposal with the Oconomowoc Common Council on Tuesday night to create the Western Lakes Fire District by next year.
