Howard Female Firefighters: Knocking Down Barriers

Aside from putting in hours at the Howard Fire Department, Kelly Krause, Sam Hackl and Carrie Rentmeester have something in common: All were told at one point in their lives that their gender meant they probably would not make it as firefighters. “I was told by a few I was too tiny,” Krause, the department’s newest female recruit, said.

Fire destroys rural Clinton shed Wednesday night

A 20-by-40-foot unoccupied shed was destroyed by fire Wednesday in rural Clinton. “It was a total loss,” said Clinton Fire Chief John F. Rindfleisch. Owner Jared Nortier reported the fire at 8719 E. Highway 67, at 5:21 p.m. Wednesday. When firefighters were dispatched from the village, less then 4 miles away from the fire, they could see a glow from the sky, Rindfleisch said.

Merrill Fire Dept. Firefighter Paramedic honored with Firemark Award for Community Service

On Tuesday, Liberty Mutual Insurance celebrated one of America’s firefighters for his commitment to the community by honoring Merrill Fire Department Firefighter Paramedic Jon Leiskau with the Liberty Mutual Firemark Award for Community Service. The award was presented by Liberty Mutual Representative, Julie Sternal, to FF/PM Leiskau for his continued commitment to the City of Merrill and the Merrill Fire Department.

Update: Cudahy Man Facing Arson Charges, Claims he lit a Spider on Fire inside Snack Factory

VIDEO: A 24-year-old Cudady man is charged with starting a fire inside a Waukesha County snack factory. His reason? He saw a spider. According to a criminal complaint, Kevin Butler noticed the spider on a sack of almonds while working at A.L. Schutzman Company in October. The complaint says he "proceeded to light the spider on fire, which is something he has done since childhood.

Marshfield man warns of potential chimney dangers after house fire

VIDEO: A Marshfield man is warning homeowners to have their chimneys cleaned and inspected regularly, after his own may be to blame for a fire that destroyed his living room. On Saturday night, Kurt Dovenbarger started a fire in his fireplace to help warm up his house. He put his 8 year-old son, Kade, to bed, then he went to sleep shortly afterward.

Garbage can fire causes evacuation of Fond du Lac High School

Fond du Lac High School was evacuated for about an hour Tuesday afternoon because of a fire in a garbage can. Firefighters say they were called to the school around 1:50 p.m. for a report of a fire in a second-floor men's bathroom. The building was evacuated, and a staff member was able to put the fire out.

Rescue dog Lacy saved by Sheboygan firefighters

Firefighters from three departments employed three firefighting apparatus, two boats and an all-terrain vehicle, Tuesday to rescue a dog that fell off a 10-foot cliff at Jaycee Quarry View Park in Sheboygan. The dog, a Springer Spaniel named Lacy, went over the cliff shortly after 6 p.m. and landed in the water before becoming trapped on the cliff's ledge near the waterline, according to a news release from the City of Sheboygan Fire Department.

Two Injured after Motorized Fuel Siphon Catches Fire in Ozaukee Garage

On Tuesday, November 15 at approximately 10:40 AM the Ozaukee Sheriff’s Office responded to a house on State Highway 33 in the Town of Saukville for the report of a garage fire. When Deputies arrived on scene flames were visible and the garage was fully engulfed. The investigation revealed that the homeowner, identified as 41-year-old Christopher Unger, was using a motorized siphon to remove gas from a boat fuel tank when it ignited.

Gas grill causes early Tuesday morning Janesville fire

A Janesville homeowner who forgot to turn off his gas grill Monday night woke Tuesday morning to a fire on his wooden deck. Tom Kuerschner heard a noise, woke and looked out the upstairs window of his home at 2629 Arbor Ridge Way to see the grill on fire on his deck, said Chris Lukas, Janesville Fire Department battalion chief.

Milwaukee Firefighters Donate Coats to Children

VIDEO: The men and women of the Milwaukee Fire Department are making sure every kid who needs a winter coat gets one. The Milwaukee firefighters raised $130,000 for the cause this year. They exceeded their goal of $120,000. For 3 days this summer, firefighters stood on street corners to collect donations.

Proposed tax levy would hike city taxes $54 in Sun Prairie

City of Sun Prairie alders are trying to cover a $167,000 shortfall in the 2017 budget less than a week before it’s presented to the public and heads to the city council for a final vote. The gap occurred after the city recently found out it will receive less transportation state aid than projected. The city also has a higher -than-expected fire department budget after city officials recently negotiated terms with the townships —- with $14,220 more than was included in the draft budget.

Two Pets Die in Two Rivers House Fire

A house fire Saturday night killed two pets and caused about $33,000 in damage. Two Rivers firefighters were called around 6:43 p.m. to the home in the 2000 block of Jackson Street. Smoke was seen coming from a window and front door of the house. Once inside, crews were able to put out the fire and save a dog and a cat.

Fire in dehumidifier damages basement of Janesville business, officials say

A fire in a dehumidifier caused extensive damage to the basement of a business in Janesville Saturday morning, according to a release. Janesville firefighters were called to 3506 N. Highway 51 around 10:50 a.m. for reports of heavy smoke in the basement of a business, officials said. Firefighters could see light smoke coming from the exterior door and found heavy smoke in the basement, according to the release.

New Kenosha fire chief eager for the challenge

Kenosha’s new fire chief said he’s excited to lead one of the state’s largest fire departments. Earlier this month, the Police and Fire Commission chose Charles Leipzig Jr. to succeed John Thomsen, who retired as chief in July. The commission said Leipzig’s long-term department vision, humility and inclusiveness of personnel stood out to the commissioners.

Bay Area Medical Center Receives New Paramedic Intercept Vehicle

Bay Area Medical Center announces the arrival of a new Paramedic intercept vehicle. BAMC provides paramedic-level 9-1-1 ambulance service partnership with the volunteer Emergency Rescue Squad to Marinette, Peshtigo, and Menominee as well as the surrounding towns. The service also works closely with the City of Marinette Fire Department when responding in Marinette.

Firefighters battle chimney fire in Green Bay

Green Bay firefighters spent early Wednesday morning battling a chimney fire. Crews were called to a home in the 800 block of Gross Lane around 1:30 a.m. When NBC26 arrived, visible flames could be seen coming from the roof. Crews were quickly able to stop the fire from spreading by cutting holes in the roof.

Trapped residents rescued: 28 departments respond to 4-alarm fire in Whitewater

VIDEO: Several departments were called out to a four-alarm fire at an apartment building in Whitewater Wednesday night, November 9th. The call came in around 6:30 p.m. This fire occurred at an apartment building on Tratt Street in Whitewater -- University Garden Apartments. First arriving crews noted fire in one of the common hallways and initiated an offensive attack.

Baby Wakes Mom in Appleton Townhouse Fire

A woman woke up because of her baby and discovered a fire broke out inside her Appleton townhouse Tuesday. Fire officials say it happened at 1201 Bartell Court around 10:30 a.m. The woman heard her 18-month-old daughter coughing and fidgeting when she spotted the fire. The mom then broke a window in the second floor bedroom and screamed for help.
