Beloit is changing the way fire departments recruit

VIDEO: The Beloit Fire Department is changing its recruitment process in hopes of increasing the applicant pool, and making the job more accessible to people of all socioeconomic classes. Beloit Fire Chief Brad Liggett said the department has struggled in the past to attract a diverse group of applicants.

Twenty residents displaced after two-alarm fire in Milwaukee

VIDEO: Emergency crews responded to a two-alarm fire in Milwaukee early Monday morning. It was reported around 3:30 a.m. near 33rd and State streets. Flames were shooting from the roof when firefighters and police officers arrived. Investigators are working to learn how the fire started. Police told WISN 12 News no injuries have been reported.

Rothschild: Riverside Fire District hosts inaugural open house

The Riverside Fire District held its first ever open house on Sunday at the Rothschild Pavilion. All fire equipment, including a medical helicopter, was available for attendees to view and tour. Fire extinguisher demonstrations were available to help teach both children and adults fire safety. "We also have the fire safety house that we borrowed from a neighboring agency that promotes fire prevention in the home and what to do to stay safe and to get out in the event that something does happen," said Kelly Hanick, Fire Chief of the Riverside District.

Holmen Area Fire Department gets head start on fire prevention week

VIDEO: National fire prevention week officially starts Sunday, but the Holmen Area Fire Department got a head start, holding an open house Saturday. This year's theme for the week is "Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out." A smoke house simulated what it would be like to evacuate during a fire, and adults were able to practice with fire extinguishers.

Downtown Whitewater fire causes estimated $300,000 in damage

An early Saturday morning fire at Rosa's Pizza in downtown Whitewater caused extensive damage to the restaurant and surrounding apartments, according to a news release. The Whitewater Fire Department was dispatched to the restaurant, 180 W. Main St., at 6:10 a.m. after a report of smoke coming from the building's rear.

Campbell Fire Department teaches students about fire safety

VIDEO: Local elementary school children participated in some fun activities, but with a serious message. The Campbell Fire Department visited 1st and 3rd graders at Summit Elementary School to teach them about the importance of fire safety. This year's message: 2 ways out. Beaver Dam Police and Fire Commission trims department budget requests

The Beaver Dam Police and Fire Commission approved outlay budget requests for the police and fire departments Tuesday night, with a few cuts. “I think this is a good clean budget,” Chairman Jeff Kohman said. After cuts were made, the police department’s total outlay budget request for 2018 is $200,600 compared to $378,300 this year and the fire department’s total outlay budget request for 2018 is $78,300 compared to $46,400 this year.

Police arrest Sheboygan man, 31, suspected of arson, vandalism

A man suspected of vandalizing a home in the 900 block of Kentucky Avenue several times over the last three weeks — including trying to set the home on fire — has been arrested by Sheboygan police. Over the past three weeks, the police department has taken five separate reports of damage and vandalism to a home and vehicle at the address.

1 worker taken to hospital, 2 Madison buildings evacuated after toxic mixture incident

Madison crews are responding to a report of a hazardous material incident at a west Madison building Thursday afternoon, an official says. Madison Fire Department spokeswoman Cynthia Schuster said firefighters and the hazmat team were sent to 601 Science Drive at 1:09 p.m. for a report of two chemicals that had combined in the lab, causing a toxic mixture.

Spontaneous combustion blamed for barn fire in Augusta

VIDEO: Smoke was seen from miles away when an Augusta barn went up in flames on Wednesday. Fire crews responded to a structure fire on Kelly Road in Augusta at roughly 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The high amounts of smoke and heat led to responses from crews in Fairchild, Osseo, Augusta, and Fall Creek. Fire officials believe that spontaneous combustion cause the fire inside the barn.

New Milton and Milton Township fire chief is on duty

Randy Banker, who became chief of the Janesville Fire Department in 2016, is officially the chief of the Milton and Milton Township Fire Department. Banker serving as the chief for two departments is the result of shared services. A transition team of consultants, fire department members and Janesville Fire Department members suggested the plan after the 2016 retirement of chief Loren Lippincott, who had served Milton part-time for nearly a decade.

Milwaukee mother faces life in prison after 4-year-old with autism bound with 7 belts, set on fire in bathtub

Sauna fire likely caused by candle, Madison officials say

A candle likely caused a sauna on Madison’s near east side to catch fire Tuesday morning, fire officials said. Crews were called around 9:50 a.m. to the 200 block of Merry Street for reports of a fire inside a backyard sauna, according to a release. Firefighters could see brown smoke coming from the eaves and around the door of the structure, officials said.

Early morning fire damages home on Milwaukee’s north side

Firefighters on Wednesday morning, October 4th responded to the scene of a house fire on Milwaukee’s north side. The call came in shortly before 5:00 a.m. It happened near 35th and Hampton. The Red Cross says they are assisting two adults and six children following the fire. No additional details have been release — including the cause of the fire or the amount of damage sustained.

Eagle Point elections reject new fire hall

The Town of Eagle Point will not be getting a new fire station after a vote for a new building failed at Monday night’s special meeting of town residents. The residents, called electors, rejected a proposed fire station by a margin of 137-116. The town said the current fire station, built in the 1970s and next to the town hall, lacks space for equipment.

Fire at auto parts recycling business in Grand Chute

VIDEO: The Grand Chute Fire Department says a fire broke out at Cousineau Auto around 2:30 Wednesday morning. Assistant Fire Chief Brian Schommer says flames were visible in the front windows when crews arrived on scene. He says they were able to put out the blaze in about five minutes. "Looks like damage was limited to the showroom area," said Schommer.
