Plans for new Eau Claire fire station advance

The city Plan Commission approved on Tuesday plans for a new fire station at Malden Avenue and Birch Street on Eau Claire’s north side. The commission approved the site plan showing the station on the 5.76-acre plat’s northern side, one of three options proposed by Five Bugles Design. The proposals on the southern side would have meant $300,000 more in construction costs largely due to soil remediation because a portion of the site used to house a landfill.

Arson suspected in fire that destroyed vacant Kenosha building

Investigators believe an arsonist may have set the fire that destroyed a vacant building early Tuesday. Kenosha Fire Chief Charles Leipzig said firefighters were called to the blaze at 5907 Fifth Ave. at about 3 a.m. The building was among five aging apartment buildings and a rooming house the city purchased recently, with plans to raze them to make way for future development.

Study calls for Baraboo Fire Department to add staff, find new facility

A consultant hired to analyze the Baraboo Fire Department recommends adding daytime staff and looking for a new facility. Full-time staff would help the department respond to daytime calls, when most paid-on-call firefighters aren’t available, RW Management Group of Waukesha observed. The firm recommends hiring a full-time firefighter to respond to daytime calls and handle routine daily duties, an emergency services director to facilitate cooperation with Baraboo District Ambulance Service and a building inspector who would also serve on the Fire Department and assist the fire inspector.

Grill sparks garage fire in Fond du Lac

VIDEO: A charcoal grill sparked a Labor Day garage fire in Fond du Lac, according to firefighters. Crews got the call to the 200 block of Chestnut St. just after 5:15 p.m., according to a news release. The grill, before it was completely cooled, was put back in the garage near flammable materials, which caught fire, authorities said in a news release.

Beaver Dam Fire Department gets $10,000 toward rescue program

United Cooperative, a farmer-owned cooperative, donated $10,000 to the Beaver Dam Fire Department to help the department in funding its water rescue program. “These funds will help prepare Beaver Dam’s response teams with water rescue equipment that is necessary to keep first responders safe and give victims the best possible chance in an unfortunate situation,” David Cramer, president and CEO of United Cooperative said in a statement.

“Engulfed in minutes:” Intense flames rip through Kenosha home; spread to neighbor’s

VIDEO: Flames jumped from one Kenosha home to another on Labor Day, Monday, September 4th during an intense blaze near 18th Avenue and 48th Street -- and firefighters had to put their hoses down as flames grew. For seven minutes, they had to put their hoses down and back away from their trucks because an electrical line fell onto their equipment.

Fond du Lac Fire Department adds concussion testing to physical exams

VIDEO: Concussions are a big concern in the sports world, but they're also a worry in the workplace. One career that poses a serious risk is firefighting. Fond du Lac Fire Rescue has made a new policy for employee physical exams. Now every firefighter has to get baseline concussion testing. "About 68,000 injuries to firefighters throughout the United States every year and about 13% of those are head injuries," explained Captain Jim Wamser.

Westby home destroyed by fire, one pet perishes

The tears rolled nonstop from the eyes of Angie Geier as she watched flames shooting through the roof of her home at 417 Coon Prairie Ave. in Westby, Saturday, Aug. 26. A short time later, Lucas Geier arrived and stared in disbelief as firefighters carried armloads of charred items from the house. Boxes of family photos and dresser drawers filled with children’s clothing, all blackened with soot, covered the front yard, along with the mangled remains of furniture.

Lodi Fire, EMS budget postponed until Nov. 6 meeting

Lodi and West Point municipalities examined the next steps for a Lodi Area Fire/Emergency Medical Services Department station at a joint meeting Aug. 21. All gathered to discuss proposed Fire and EMS 2018 budgets with the intent to pass them. They also discussed a Request for Proposal that solicits a firm to conduct a comprehensive review of long-term facility needs, as well as new site locations for a joint EMS and Fire station.

Milwaukee firefighters respond to house fire near 11th and Keefe

Milwaukee Fire Department is looking into what caused a house fire near 11th and Keefe Friday morning, September 1st. According to authorities, the fire happened around 1:00 a.m. The house suffered heavy damage on one side. Red Cross was at the scene but said the house looked vacant.

Marshfield Fire Department, Police partner with animal shelter for calendar

The Marshfield Area Pet Shelter has partnered with Marshfield Police Department and Marshfield Fire and Rescue Department to create a calendar to raise money and awareness. The calendar features 12 kittens posed with firefighter/paramedics and police officers at their departments. MAPS is working with local company Premier Printing to design and develop a calendar, which will be sold at MAPS’ Adoption Center in Marshfield Mall beginning in October.

Power line, faulty hydrant complicate Sheboygan garage blaze

A power line lying across the roof of a burning garage, a faulty fire hydrant and a leaking propane cylinder inside the structure complicated Sheboygan firefighters’ efforts to control the Wednesday-evening blaze. Nobody was injured in the fire that caused an estimated $25,000 in damages to a detached garage on the 1800 block of North Seventh Street.

Madison Firefighters Urge Attorney General To Reinstate Fire Safety Regulation

Firefighters are asking the state's top law enforcement official to weigh in on a fire safety regulation the Walker administration says it can't enforce anymore. The Madison Fire Department has submitted a formal request to Attorney General Brad Schimel, asking him to support a regulation that required sprinklers in apartment buildings that have between three and 20 units.

2 missing cases prompt searches in separate areas of Chippewa River

Emergency responders in Chippewa and Eau Claire counties spent Wednesday searching for two people missing in separate incidents in the Chippewa River. By the end of the day, both searches came up empty. In Chippewa County, officials have been searching for 45-year-old Kyle Anderson, of Altoona, who is believed to have fallen out of a boat into the river near the Lake Wissota dam sometime after 3 p.

Fire destroys home, truck near Stevens Point

VIDEO: A fire destroyed a home Wednesday morning near Stevens Point, but multiple people inside escaped unharmed. The fire was reported at about 8 a.m. near Sunset Drive in the town of Dewey, less than 10 miles north of Stevens Point. The home already had flames coming out of the walls when firefighters arrived, according to Dewey Fire Chief LeRoy Pukrop.

Several injuries reported in crash at Taylor and 17th in Racine

Racine police were working Tuesday night to sort out what led to a two-vehicle crash that occurred at 17th Street and Taylor Avenue that possibly sent up to four people to the hospital. Police and fire crews were dispatched just before 8:30 p.m. to a report of a crash with entrapment. Racine resident Vincent Cosey said he had just gotten off work and was driving down Taylor Avenue right behind a blue pickup truck.

Family recovering from camper fire near Mauston

Last week, surgeons took skin from the leg of Becca Micus and grafted it onto her hands and arms. She suffered third-degree burns to her face, arms and hands Aug. 12 in a camper fire near Mauston, and every day since, James Micus has gone to visit her and his two children in the UW-Madison Burn Center.

Clinton police arrest two, seek two more involved in house fire

Clinton police have made two arrests but are still looking for two more suspects they believe started fires at a church-owned house and a playground earlier this month. The main fire caused $200,000 in damage to a home owned by First Presbyterian Church at 314 Church St., Police Chief David Hooker said.

Early morning structure fire at a Wausau home

Wausau Fire quickly put out flames at a two-story building this morning. The fire broke out at a home on S. Fourth Avenue around 4 a.m. Wausau's Battalion Chief Allan Antolick says all residents were outside of the house when firefighters arrived on scene. "The building was clear of occupants and no one was injured" said Antolick.

Guyant appointed to Sun Prairie Fire Advisory Committee on a 5-3 vote

District 4 Alder and City Council President Al Guyant, who opposes an expansion of 24/7 westside fire service, has been nominated to the Sun Prairie Fire Advisory Committee. Guyant edged out fellow District 4 Alder Mary Polenske, a supporter of adding night time firefighters to the Westside Community Service Building as soon as possible, on a 5-3 vote.
