Fire Starts at Oshkosh Business

Fire has caused an unknown amount of damage at an Oshkosh business. Investigators say the blaze at Bedding Specialists was caused by a torch that an asphalt company was using to clear weeds in the parking lot. The fire started at 12:23 pm Tuesday and was under control within ten minutes. Upon arrival, firefighters reported heavy smoke coming from the building's south side.

One person injured in chemical spill at UW Animal Science building

One person was hurt in a laboratory at the UW-Madison Animal Science building Monday afternoon after a bottle of chemicals broke on the floor. The incident happened at about 1:40 p.m. on the 10th floor of the building on campus at 1675 Observatory Drive, the Madison Fire Department said. The victim reported eye irritation after a bottle containing chloroform and methanol was dropped on the floor.

Beaver Dam Fire Chief recommends new rescue boat to commission

Beaver Dam Police and Fire Commission unanimously approved purchase of a new rescue boat for the Beaver Dam Fire Department Tuesday night. Fire Chief Alan Mannel is recommending a 24-foot aluminum boat made by Kann Manufacturing with a low bid of $61,000. Mannel said in an email that the boat will have a semi-v bottom, trailer and a Mercury outboard motor.

Update: Deadly explosion in Greenfield believed to have resulted from fumes building up

Investigators have concluded that the explosion and fire that killed a 24-year-old Greenfield man at an apartment complex was caused by a buildup of gasoline fumes near a running lawnmower. Andrew J. Knutson died in the explosion and fire in a maintenance shed at the Willowick Apartments, 7020 W. Southridge Drive, shortly before 10 a.

Authorities suspect they found Milwaukee arsonist in burn unit

A 24-year-old found at an area hospital with severe burns is believed to be behind an explosion and fire two weeks ago that destroyed a a Honda Ridgeline and a garage on the city's north side. According to a search warrant, a neighbor saw a man running from the fire at North 29th and West Center streets on July 17 while tearing off his two burning shirts.

Thanks to his potentially lifesaving invention, Eau Claire fire captain to meet Trump

A compass that would direct firefighters through unfamiliar and treacherous burning buildings started as a seed of an idea thought up by veteran firefighter Jeff Dykes. In three years, the Eau Claire fire captain’s idea turned into his own business, Northern Star Fire, which gained international interest and propelled Dykes to the national stage, where today he is one of 100 small-business owners who will participate in a roundtable with President Donald Trump at the White House.

Lightning may have sparked fire that destroyed garage in Hull

VIDEO: A lightning strike may have started a fire that destroyed a garage Monday afternoon in the town of Hull. The fire was reported shortly before 4 p.m. near North Reserve Drive, a few miles north of Stevens Point. The garage was engulfed in flames and the roof had already collapsed by the time firefighters arrived on the scene, according to Hull Fire Chief Mark Kluck.

Early-morning fire destroys house in Hales Corners

VIDEO: An early morning fire destroyed a home in Hales Corners early Monday morning. The home is located at 124th Street and Edgerton Avenue. It was engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived around 4:45 a.m. The fire caused the roof and portions of the second floor to collapse. An official with the fire department said no injuries have been reported.

Marathon County lists three possible causes for landfill fire

VIDEO: The Marathon County Solid Waste Department has listed three possible causes for a fire that broke out at the landfill Sunday afternoon. Authorities responded to the scene at around 2:00 p.m. after receiving calls from neighbors and drivers on Highway 29 about smoke billowing into the air. Department Director Meleesa Johnson said landfill fires are not unusual, and are usually caused by batteries, charcoals, or fireworks.

As Holmen expands, so does its police, fire departments

The growth in Holmen and the surrounding area has meant an increased need to expand public safety services to residents and businesses. To meet the need, the Holmen Police Department and the Holmen Area Fire Department have added new hires to their rosters. Officer Tyler Franks started with the Holmen Police Department June 26 and has been undergoing six weeks of field training with another officer.

Manitowoc man spits on, bites officers, emergency personnel

An 18-year-old Manitowoc man was arrested early Saturday morning after biting and spitting on police officers and emergency personnel in an ambulance, a Manitowoc police press release said. According to the release, police responded to a call at 3:41 a.m. Saturday of an 18-year-old man "acting irrationally" and possibly under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Fire crews work to put out fire at Brookfield office park complex

VIDEO: City of Brookfield Fire Department was called out to 12690 W North Avenue around 2:48 a.m. Sunday morning for a fire. When they got there, flames were coming out of the top of Building "C." Fire Chief Charlie Myers said no one was inside the building at the time of the fire and it appears to be a complete loss.

Early-morning fire damages Kenosha Education Association building

An early-morning building fire heavily damaged the Kenosha Education Association building and shut down several streets in the adjacent neighborhood. Firefighters were called to the building, at 5610 55th St., at around 3:30 a.m. Friday morning. Most of the flames had been extinguished by 6:00 a.m. The Kenosha Education Association is home of the local teacher's union, which represents teachers and other school staff in the Kenosha Unified School District.

Beekeeping: Just another day in the life of Fond du Lac firefighters

Just add the title of "bee professional" to the many hats the Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue wears. On Sunday, Jim Knowles, assistant fire chief in training and safety, said the department received a call regarding a large swarm of honeybees in a tree at 14 Donohue Court. "The swarm was located on two branches in the tree, so we had a couple go out there and they determined it wasn't an immediate safety concern," he said.

One person was flown to a hospital after being burned in a tractor fire Thursday night in Stevens Point. The fire was reported shortly before 8 p.m. near Windy Drive, according to Stevens Point Fire Capt. J.B. Moody. The tractor was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, but the fire was extinguished quickly.

SUV fire spreads to garage, Madison fire officials say

A vehicle fire that spread to a garage caused thousands of dollars in damage to a west Madison home Thursday, officials said. The Madison Fire Department said crews responded to a report of a fire at 12:18 p.m. in the 2900 block of Maple Run Drive. An SUV that was on fire was close to the home, and when crews arrived, they found the fire had spread to the attached garage.

1 person found dead when crews respond to Beloit house fire

One person was found dead when firefighters responded to a house fire in Beloit early Thursday morning. According to the Beloit Police Department, crews responded to a home in the 2500 block of Shopiere Road just after 5:30 a.m. Police said there was a fire found in the basement level of the house. Fire crews entered the home and found a person in the house with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Fire damages vacant house on Milwaukee’s northwest side; arson suspected

Authorities are investigating a possible arson that happened early Thursday morning, July 27th on Milwaukee’s northwest side. The fire broke out around midnight at a home near 22nd and Melvina. Officials say the house is vacant — and is owned by a company in California. No one was hurt as a result of the fire.

City of Sun Prairie investigation of former EMS director confirms some union allegations

Sun Prairie EMS Director James “Kep” Anderson, who resigned in April, admitted to wrestling with a female employee, destroying city property and not following controlled substance policies, during a city investigation interview. In documents The Star obtained through a public records request, City of Sun Prairie staff verified six allegations made by the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) union Local 311.

Nobody injured in Far East Side garage fire, Madison Fire says

A fire in an attached garage at a home on the city's Far East Side caused an estimated $150,000 in damage, with nobody hurt in the blaze. The fire was reported at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday in the 900 block of Inwood Way, the Madison Fire Department said. "Several people called 911 after they noticed their neighbor's garage was on fire," said spokeswoman Bernadette Galvez.
