Proposed Madison fire station would decrease emergency response times

VIDEO: Imagine waiting 15 minutes for first responders to get to you during an emergency. That’s a concern for residents on Madison’s southeast side and it’s an issue city leaders are hoping to tackle at a budget meeting Tuesday. A proposed fire station on Femrite Drive would decrease emergency response times to five minutes, helping the city meet the standard set by the National Fire Protection Association.

9 displaced in Madison duplex fire, officials say

Nine people were displaced Tuesday morning after a fire broke out in a duplex on Madison’s far east side, officials said. Officials were called to 6615 Radford Drive around 10:45 a.m. for reports of an active structure fire, officials said. Officials said five adults and four children were displaced from two units.

Barn destroyed in Village of Harrison fire

VIDEO: Fire crews said a barn and farm equipment were destroyed in an overnight fire in Calumet County. The call came in around 9:30 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Manitowoc Road and Highway 55 in the Village of Harrison. When crews arrived on scene they found flames shooting from the barn. Firefighters said when they entered the building they found a skid-steer on fire which they believe spread to the straw inside the barn.

Funds needed for new 5-bay fire station on Eau Claire's north side

Eau Claire city officials won’t know how many engine bays they can include in a new fire station until after they receive bids next week, but a Fire Department official says more bays are needed. The city has budgeted $4.15 million for the station to be built at Malden Avenue and Birch Street on the city’s north side, with another $500,000 to be included in the 2018 capital improvement project budget.

Oshkosh Fire Department responds to fire on Bowen Street

VIDEO: Firefighters battled a blaze Monday night at a nonprofit-owned home under renovation on the city's east side. The Oshkosh Fire Department responded about 7:30 p.m. to a report of a smoldering roof at 561 Bowen St. Authorities blocked off Bowen Street for at least an hour, as fire crews remained at the scene.

Six members of La Crosse Fire Department deployed to Florida to help relief efforts

VIDEO: La Crosse's Fire Department is sending help to Florida. Six members of the fire department were deployed to areas impacted by Hurricane Irma Sunday. They are a part of the Wisconsin Task Force One Urban Search and Rescue Team. The team is heading for Jacksonville to help emergency responders in the area, but those plans could change as the storm heads north.

Appleton fire chief to retire in March 2018

VIDEO: The city's Fire Chief Len Vander Wyst will retire from his position in March 2018, he announced this week. "I'll be here for a while so no need to say goodbyes at this point," Vander Wyst told the Common Council at its meeting on Wednesday night, according to video of the meeting. Green Bay: Controversial 9/11 monument comes down

Calling for the community to help come up with a better way of remembering those who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Mayor Jim Schmitt Monday led a deaccession ceremony for the 9/11 monument at the Neville Public Museum. “We need to properly memorialize that event,” Schmitt told a crowd of about 100 gathered at the monument.

Plover arson suspect admits to starting 10 fires since July

A 26-year-old Plover man admitted to starting at least 10 fires in the Plover area over the last three months, according to Plover police. Kyle Andrich was arrested Friday in connection with a fire at an abandoned house at 2110 Post Road in Plover. The Plover fire and police departments responded to the fire.

Waupun Fire Department to host emergency response fire training

The Waupun Fire Department, in partnership with the Wisconsin Propane Education & Research Council will host an emergency response, live propane fire training at 6 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 18, at Waupun City Garage, 903 N. La Crosse Fire Station Planning Task Force starts discussions

Woman rescued after jumping off Chippewa Falls Highway 124 bridge

A woman was rescued from the Chippewa Falls NSP dam after jumping off the Highway 124 bridge, Chippewa Falls police chief Matt Kelm said Thursday. Police responded to emergency calls at 7:27 a.m. that a woman had jumped into the river near the dam area. While driving over the bridge, the woman stopped her car in traffic and jumped off the edge of the bridge, Kelm said.

Attempted murder suspect likely focus of Monona fire probe

VIDEO: A suspect in an attempted homicide is likely the focus of an investigation into a Monona house fire, after authorities say SWAT team devices used to enter the home were not incendiary. Authorities say 42-year old Edward Matthews was arrested Thursday at a home at 5606 Tecumseh Avenue, after he fired gun shots at Sheriff's deputies, and emerged from the home as it became fully engulfed in flames.

Fire damages Mount Pleasant assisted-living facility

Fire investigators are looking into a fire Thursday that damaged an assisted-living facility. The emergency call went out at 3:30 p.m. at Racine Commons, 8500 Corporate Drive, just north of Highway 20, and escalated to a second alarm for equipment and personnel. South Shore Fire Battalion Chief John Radewan said as soon as firefighters got to the scene they saw smoke and flames coming from the northeast corner of the H-shaped housing complex, which is west of Stuart Road and east of 90th Street.

Beaver Dam Fire Department receives ‘Call of the Year’ award

Beaver Dam Fire Chief Alan Mannel accepted the “Call of the Year” award from Flight For Life Wednesday night for his department’s quick response to a November 2016 crash. “It’s something you guys should never have to go through again,” said Jayce Commo, professional relations with Flight For Life. Commo told the fire department that the response won in a landslide.

‘Incinerated Pop-Tart' prompts UW dorm evacuation

A University of Wisconsin-Madison residence hall was evacuated Wednesday morning after an incinerated Pop-Tart set off fire alarms, according to a release. Firefighters were called just before 9 a.m. to Phillips Hall on Willow Drive when alarms started to sound, officials said. A maintenance worker told crews the alarm originated in a second-floor dorm room, and there was a smell of burned food in the building, according to the release.

Saturday block party benefits Baraboo firefighters with entertainment starting Thursday

Fire On Oak Fest promises a hot time Saturday in downtown Baraboo. The third annual event benefiting the Baraboo Fire Department will return to the street outside Brothers On Oak, the fundraiser’s sponsor. “Every year has gotten bigger and better,” said Brothers On Oak owner Grant Slayton. Possible arsonist and fireworks thief in Town of Easton

The search is on in the Town of Easton for a possible arsonist and fireworks thief. A fire destroyed an uninsured home on East Tower Road on Aug. 26 when the homeowner was gone, Marathon County Deputy Sheriff Dale Ruechel said. "At the same time, someone stole a large amount of fireworks from a shed on the property and stole three of the five trail cameras the owner had up on the land," he said.

Follow Up: Fund to help Kenosha family displaced by fire

A fund has been established to help a multi-generational family of six who was displaced Monday when a fire destroyed their home at 4611 18th Ave. Karen and Michael Scofield owned the home they shared with their daughter Stephanie, son-in-law Jared Hunt, and grandchildren Tyler, 5, and Avery, 1. Karen said the family’s most immediate needs — clothing, school supplies and temporary shelter — have been met.

Clyman shed, other buildings are damaged by fire on Friday

Firefighters from multiple agencies were paged to N4040 Welsh Road in the town of Clyman shortly before noon Friday for a shed fire. According to Clyman Fire Chief Eric Howlett, initial reports were called in that a shed was fully engulfed in flames. Howlett said that, upon arrival ,the Clyman Fire Department found one shed that was completely destroyed and the fire had spread to a nearby garage and storage shed.
