Contractor who struck gas line in Sun Prairie not registered to do business in Wisconsin

The contractor that cut into a 4-inch pipe carrying natural gas underneath downtown Sun Prairie on July 10 just before an explosion leveled a city block and killed a firefighter was not registered to do business in Wisconsin, according to state records. The Journal Sentinel confirmed Thursday that Michigan-based VC Tech, Inc.

First mass casualty drill being conducted on Milwaukee’s streetcar

VIDEO: It’s a first for “The Hop.” Emergency responders will conduct a mass casualty drill Friday morning on the streetcar tracks in Milwaukee. Officials tell CBS 58 the scenario for the drill is a suspicious package detonating with multiple people on the streetcar. There will be live actors playing the victims.

Firefighters called to Marth Wood Shaving Supply near Marathon

Firefighters were called to Marth Wood Supply near Marathon Thursday evening. According to dispatch reports, there was a fire in a dryer. It was called in around 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The business is located north of Marathon on State Highway 107. It makes wood shavings and animal bedding, among other things.

Rubicon firefighter national finalist in award for hearing-impaired

Clare Wolf felt like Superwoman. After trying out her hearing aid devices, the Rubicon firefighter could, for the first time, hear the air flowing through vents, water dripping down the drain and birds softly chirping in the morning. Wolf is a finalist for the Oticon Focus on People Awards, one of three people competing for votes in the adult category.

Emergency Responders in Appleton Receive Gift to Help Reach Out to Children

Holmen Area Fire Department hires new assistant chief/chief

America's deadliest forest fire isn't the only overlooked piece of history near Peshtigo

It's been called the Forgotten Fire. On the night of Oct. 8, 1871, a devastating forest fire ripped through Peshtigo and the surrounding area, killing 1,500 people and destroying a swath of land 10 miles wide and 40 miles long. Dodge County farmer trampled by bull

Fire officials say a woman is seriously hurt after she was trampled by a bull at a dairy farm in the town of Clyman. Clyman Fire Chief Eric Howlett says family members found the owner of the farm, Tena Borchardt, 57, with severe injuries. Investigators aren't sure when the incident happened, because no one witnessed it.

Sun Prairie Volunteer Fire Dept. back to full staff after explosion

Racine seeks different site for fire station

'It's bad. It's bad': Construction crew calls 911 after hitting gas main before Sun Prairie explosion

"We were doing construction work and we hit a gas main," a caller told Dane County Dispatch on July 10 before an explosion that killed one firefighter and destroyed part of a downtown city block. That caller, whose name was redacted by Dane County Communications before release, made what police have said is the first call to report a problem before the explosion in Sun Prairie.

Raccoon chewing wires may have caused attic fire in Madison

A fire in an east side apartment that started due to frayed electrical wires may have been caused by raccoons, the Madison Fire Department reported. Sun Prairie explosion investigation has not ruled out criminal negligence

Wisconsin Rapids gets new fire chief

A 27-year veteran of the Wisconsin Rapids Fire Department has been named the new fire chief. Scott Young was appointed interim fire chief after former Fire Chief Dave Kerkman's retirement in September 2017. On Monday evening, the Wisconsin Rapids Police and Fire Commission made the interim appointment permanent when it named Young as the new fire chief, according to a news release from the commission.

New Appleton fire chief: I'm 'strongly focused on building relationships'

When Jeremy Hansen was a student at Fox Valley Technical College in the early 1990s, he had big ambitions, including dreaming of one day becoming a fire chief. The dream became a reality on Monday when he was sworn in as the new chief of the Appleton Fire Department. Hansen is the 12th fire chief in the department's history.

Firefighter, resident injured in Milwaukee's Hillside neighborhood fire

A man was hospitalized with burns and a firefighter suffered cuts to his hand in a Monday morning fire in Milwaukee's Hillside neighborhood, a fire official said. The fire at the Plymouth Apartments, at 820 W. Galena Ave., was on the first and second floors of the building but contained to two units.

Two passengers dead in Town of Sherman crash

Two passengers died in a car accident while traveling westbound on CTH SS in the Town of Sherman on Sunday. Sheboygan County Joint Dispatch Center received a 911 call around 6:20 p.m. when a car with three occupants failed to stop at a stop sign at CTH I and CTH SS. A truck driving southbound on CTH I struck the vehicle, killing the two passengers.

Neighbors help first responders during Door County fire

VIDEO: A fire in Door County does some damage, but firefighters say they got some help from some quick thinking neighbors. First responders say a fire at a manufactured home at Chaudior's Dock may have started outside the home, before jumping into it. "It started outside the trailer. Inside underneath it, we accessed the hole through the floor, contained the fire to the floor part of the trailer and ended up clearing out the smoke," said Ryan Wery, Brussels-Union-Gardner Fire Department.
