Oconto man to receive Carnegie Medal for heroism

An Oconto man who rescued a drowning woman last year has been named a Carnegie Hero. Eugene Stamsta called his selection for the honor — which has recognized more than 10,000 people over nearly 115 years for risking their lives for others in life-threatening situations — as “overwhelming.” “I thought, I got my (award) from the city and that was nice, but I didn’t expect this at all,” he said.

Program helps Beloit students decide if firefighting is a potential career

Ripping off car doors. Rescuing fallen firefighters. Climbing stories high on a ladder. For some local teenagers, the experiences have shown what it'd be like to become a firefighter - before even graduating high school. The students have participated in hours of training sessions as a part of the Town of Beloit Fire Department's "Youth Explorer Program," founded by firefighter/paramedic Casey Bellard about three years ago.

South Shore ambulance fee increase postponed

Three people have sued contractors involved in the Sun Prairie explosion from July 10, according to court records. Abigail Barr, wife of deceased Capt. Cory Barr, filed a wrongful death and a construction negligence lawsuit Thursday - on the same day authorities said no one would face charges, court documents show.

A police chief says there will be no criminal charges against anyone related to an explosion in southern Wisconsin that killed a firefighter and leveled several buildings. Sun Prairie Police Chief Patrick Anhalt said Thursday "There is not probable cause to believe a crime was committed." Sun Prairie firefighter Cory Barr was killed in the July 10 explosion that destroyed a bar he owned, five other businesses and a home.

Town of Richmond officials say rural location can contribute to destructive fires

Town of Richmond Chairman Jeff Karbash says the town's remote location likely contributed to how long it took to control a fire that destroyed a residential home Tuesday night. The town, which has a population just over 2,000, sits between several fire districts in Walworth County. Karbash says without a fire station of its own, fires can go on for an extended length of time before a unit arrives.

Cat dies in Manitowoc basement fire caused by portable heater

PHOTO: A fire that broke out in the basement of a Manitowoc home Tuesday was reportedly caused by a portable heater. Just before 4:30 p.m., fire crews were called to a home in the 1100 block of South 25th Street for a report of smoke, according to a press release from the Manitowoc Fire Department. When crews arrived they noticed a significant amount of smoke in the area and reported the basement to be on fire, the release stated.

Beloit: Three honored for life-saving heroism

Three Beloit residents were recognized Monday for their heroism in saving lives during an Oct. 12 house fire on Tenth Street. Fire at Superior grain elevator causes $10M in damages, battalion chief says

Southern Door Fire Board names new fire chief

With a vote last Wednesday night of the Southern Door Fire Board, there are now two fire departments in Door County with chiefs named Vandertie. The board selected 35-year fire department veteran Gary Vandertie to lead the department that provides fire protection and emergency medical response services in the village and town of Forestville as well as the towns of Clay Banks and Nasewaupee.

Attorney: Gardner emergency responders not licensed, not insured

Good Samaritan saves woman from burning Rock County home

VIDEO: A Good Samaritan said he was just in the right place at the right time after he saved his neighbor from a burning home in a Rock Co. township. Korey Statton said he was outside finishing chores at his home in Hanover when he heard a woman calling for help across the street. Careless use of smoking materials causes fire in Fond du Lac, no one injured

Firefighters on Monday morning, Dec. 17 were called out to a residence on S. Marr Street in Fond du Lac for reports of a mattress on fire. The call came in around 5:50 a.m. Careless use of smoking materials sparks mattress fire in Fond du Lac, no one injured. Upon arrival, fire crews entered a a two story, wood framed residence and extinguished the fire before it was able to spread.

No one injured in Randolph house fire

No one was home when Randolph and Fox Lake fire departments battled a house fire in Randolph on Saturday night. Randolph Fire Chief Ed Hoksbergen said the fire at 121 Tamarack St. was a single-family rental unit. The fire department was dispatched to the home at 9:45 p.m. “It started on the first floor,” Hoksbergen said.
