Over a dozen departments respond to fire in Walworth County

Eighteen departments responded to a massive barn fire in Walworth County on Thursday night. According to the Sharon Fire Department, the call came in just after 7:30 p.m. for a fire. When crews got there, they found the fire had started on the second floor of the barn, in the area where hay was kept.

Village of Bellevue Fire Department looks to staff station 24/7

As the Village of Bellevue continues to grow, so does the need for 24-hour emergency response. “Right now, we've got 155 single family residential units that are coming in; and just across the street here, this has come up in the past two years,” Village Administrator Diane Wessel said. Baraboo EMS seeks new home as part of proposed joint facility with fire department

Baraboo EMS Chief Dana Sechler took his current position a decade ago and remembers being told to prepare; a new building for the department would be coming soon. After 10 years, preliminary plans look promising. “We’re very happy and excited to see what possibilities come,” Sechler said. “People get excited about that; a new venture and a new building to look forward to.

Smokey Bear's first costume was made in Mercer, and the head is still on display there

Smokey Bear celebrates his 75th anniversary this year as the poster bear for wildfire prevention across the country. But Smokey isn’t just a poster bear. Since 1950, he’s existed in 3D form, as a costume worn by rangers, firefighters and volunteers around the country. The first Smokey costume wasn’t created in Washington or somewhere out west, but right here in Wisconsin, in the Northwoods town of Mercer.

Marshall emergency services personnel endure the heat

It’s been a relatively mild summer, with one major heat advisory roughly two weeks ago. Beloit police investigate string of burglaries, arson outside church

Officers with the Beloit Police Department are investigating a number of burglaries and an arson in Rock County. The burglaries occurred sometime between July 24 and July 25 in Beloit and the town of Turtle. One burglary occurred at Beloit College, at a utility shed on Church Street, according to a social media post by the department.

"That makes my day," widow reacts to Sun Prairie post office being renamed after firefighter husband

A Sun Prairie post office will be renamed in honor of fallen firefighter Capt. Cory Barr. The Senate passed bipartisan legislation to make the change Wednesday. Barr died last July while responding to a gas leak in downtown Sun Prairie. Barr is credited with evacuating more than 100 people from the affected area before an explosion erupted.

Kenosha man dies in industrial accident

A 53-year-old Kenosha man died in an industrial accident Tuesday morning. According to Kenosha Police, emergency responders were called at 9:12 a.m. to Heartland Produce, 4550 70th Ave. Upon arrival, officers found an injured person who ultimately died from his injuries. Police said the accident occurred while maintenance work was being completed on the property.

Beloit Police and Fire Commission to hire search firm in search for new fire chief

The Beloit Police and Fire Commission on Monday unanimously approved a process to hire a search firm in seeking a new Beloit Fire Department chief. City Attorney Elizabeth Krueger will issue the request for proposals from executive search firms to prompt the nationwide search. The PFC could review responses as soon as the end of August, followed by interviews of firms starting in September.

Fire Department and Tomah Area Ambulance Service to share a building

The Tomah Fire Department is planning to construct a new facility. Tim Adler, Tomah Fire Department chief, said the plan is to share a facility with the Tomah Area Ambulance Service to create a single emergency service complex. The architectural firm Keller from Appleton is drafting a building design to get some rough numbers for the cost, and it should be brought before the city council in August, Adler said.

No one hurt after house fire in Schofield

On Monday evening, multiple fire crews responded to reports of a house fire in the City of Schofield. The single-family home is located on the corner of Robert Street and Spring Street, near Mayoral Park. No people or pets were in the building at the time of the fire. "The windows of the home were open when we arrived," said Deputy Chief Rob Bowen with the Riverside Fire District.

Menomonee Falls top safety official resigns from the fire department during staffing and vehicle 'crisis'

Menomonee Falls Director of Protective Services Anna Ruzinski on July 29 resigned from her position overseeing the village's fire department, officials announced in a news release. Village Manager Mark Fitzgerald said that there is no hiring timeline set in place to replace Ruzinski, who oversaw both the fire and police departments and will continue to serve as police chief.

Wisconsin Rapids fire chief saves life while on vacation

A Hayward man says Wisconsin Rapids Fire Chief Scott Young is a hero after the chief saved his life July 18. Bruce Claflin said the incident happened just before a weekend golfing event he had been planning with family and friends. He had been doing yard work to prepare for visitors to his Hayward home and putting in time in the golfing magazine he owns.

Racine County man helps rescue neighbor from burning home

A neighbor helped a woman escape a burning home in Racine County this weekend. The fire started at a home on Blackhawk Drive in Caledonia Saturday afternoon. Nicholas Patrenets, who lives behind the home, was in his kitchen when he saw the smoke. "We happened to glance up and we saw all we smoke and we assumed it was a grill or something cooking.

Flying Apache attack helicopters in Iraq and Afghanistan prepared Tim Cherwin for his current job. Kenosha family safely escapes house fire

A Kenosha family is displaced following a fire on Friday evening. The fire was reported around 8:15 p.m in a home near 33rd Avenue and 55th Street. According to the Kenosha Fire Department, the four people home at the time of the fire were able to escape the blaze unharmed. Firefighters were on scene for roughly two hours.

Fire damages West Bend condominium complex: ‘Did not have a fire sprinkler system’

Firefighters on Friday morning, July 26 responded to the scene of a fire at a condominium complex in West Bend. It happened around 1:20 a.m. near River Drive and School Place. The six unit condominium building did not have a fire sprinkler system or a fire alarm system. No additional details have been released — including the cause of the fire or the amount of damage sustained.

City officials said Thursday new information shows the firefighting foam used to put out fires at utility substations in Madison did contain perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, clarifying an earlier statement made by Madison fire officials. Firefighters used foam to put out the fires at substations for American Transmission Co.

Fond du Lac Firefighters Local 400 to "Fill the Boot" for MDA

Fond du Lac Firefighters will once again be asking for the public’s help to “Fill the Boot” and raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The Fill the Boot campaign begins next Thursday, August 1st at the corner of Division Street and Park Avenue from 10 am until 5 pm. Thanks to a generous match from the owner of Magic Car Wash Express, the community’s donations will be matched up to $10,000.
