Red Cross: About 17 people displaced after early morning structure fire in La Crosse

The La Crosse Fire Department says firefighters responded to a structure fire on Fifth Avenue South Sunday at 7:20 a.m. The fire was at an apartment building across from Poage Park. Firefighter say it took them two minutes to get to the scene, where they saw flames and heavy smoke coming from the middle of the building.

'Fire in a pipe' causes $20,000 in damage at Racine engineering company

No injuries were reported after a metal parts manufacturer/engineering company suffered $20,000 in damage due to a fire in a heat ventilation system Friday, according to the Racine Fire Department. In a press release, the department said it was called for a "fire in a pipe" just after 11:30 a.m. on Friday.

One hospitalized after being pulled from Lake Michigan near South Milwaukee Yacht Club

An adult male was found unresponsive in Lake Michigan near the South Milwaukee Yacht Club on Friday night. According to the South Milwaukee Fire Department, a 911 call was received around 8:57 PM for an individual who was unresponsive in the water. When South Milwaukee Fire and Police units arrived, they found an adult male face down in the water near a boat slip in the middle of the dock area of the yacht club.

Hales Corners appoints new fire chief, a 37-year veteran to the fire department

Hales Corners Fire Department has appointed 37-year veteran firefighter, Pete Jaskulski to the department's highest position, the village announced Friday. Jaskulski was a paid-on-call firefighter and advanced emergency medical technician for the department and held the position of assistant chief for 18 years before this promotion to fire chief.

Follow Up: Driver in fiery crash into Beaver Dam Middle School accused of driving 80 mph while intoxicated at time of collision

PHOTO: A 22-year-old Beaver Dam man was traveling 80 to 90 mph Wednesday night when his car smashed into Beaver Dam Middle School, causing damage estimated at $100,000 to the building, officials say. Roy Cortez appeared Thursday in Dodge County Circuit Court charged with a felony count of fleeing or eluding an officer causing damage to property.

Fox Point man killed in New York City elevator accident

A UW-Madison graduate and Wisconsin native is dead following an elevator accident in New York City. Investigators say two other people had just gotten off of a downtown Manhattan elevator when Samuel Waisbren, of Fox Point, tried to exit as well. That’s when the elevator suddenly dropped, crushing him between the elevator car and the shaft wall.

Man, 25, identified as vicitm in Vilas County crash

Investigators say 25-year-old Brian King was killed Thursday as result of a traffic crash in Boulder Junction. According to a press release from the Vilas County Sheriff's Office, dispatch received a call of a collision at the intersection of U.S. Highway 51 and County Highway H in the township of Boulder Junction.

Man arrested after fiery crash into Beaver Dam Middle School

A man fleeing police at high speed on city streets following an apparent domestic disturbance crashed into Beaver Dam Middle School, where his car caught fire Wednesday, police said. The 22-year-old driver, who was believed to be under the influence of alcohol, sustained non-life threatening injuries in the crash and was arrested for domestic disorderly conduct, fleeing an officer, drunken driving with a suspended driver's license and driving without insurance, according to a press release from the Beaver Dam Police Department.

Racine County: Crashes spike in I-94 work zone, traffic stops 'unsafe for everyone involved'

On the morning of June 19, Kenneth Rogers, a 40-year-old truck driver from Milwaukee, was on his normal route headed south on Interstate 94 through Racine County. A truck driver for five years, Rogers loved his job and knew his route well, his sister Christina Rogers said. As Kenneth Rogers passed over Kraut Road/50th Road about a mile north of Highway 20, he began to make a lane change.

Merrill fire department recruits first chaplain in 130-year history to bolster mental health efforts

VIDEO: The newest member of a fire department in Lincoln County trained for years to help the community but his experience doesn't include fighting fires. Instead, David Szeto's years as a pastor qualified him for the newly created role of chaplain with the Merrill Fire Department. "To have that privilege and the blessing to do that is just nerve wracking but on the other hand I'm very honored that they selected me to be the very first one," said Szeto.

Ettrick firefighters called to rescue cow from pool

PHOTO: Sometimes, a cow just needs to take a dip. Firefighters with the Ettrick Fire Department responded to an unusual rescue Tuesday. They were needed to help get a cow safely out of a pool. Thankfully, their hard work paid off and the cow was returned home safely. Ettrick is a village of around 500 people located in Trempealeau County.

Fire and explosions destroy shed, farm equipment in Wood County

Firefighters battled a shed fire despite multiple explosions near Vesper in Wood County Tuesday night. First responders were dispatched around 11:20 p.m. to the structure fire at 4535 County C in the town of Sigel, according to the Vesper Fire Department. Firefighters arrived to find a shed on fire with many pieces of farming equipment and a large fuel tank inside.

Mazomanie Fire Department buys boats, trains in swift water rescue

A couple of things stick out for Mazomanie Fire Chief Mark Geisler when he thinks back to Aug. 20, 2018. The station started empty with everyone out for sandbagging operations. It was quickly filled with evacuees from about 100 homes, along with volunteers who wanted to help. “A lot of people you know on a first name basis, so to see those people with all of their belongings scattered across their front yard and trying to air-dry or salvage what they can, just the loss and devastation was pretty hard to see," Geisler said.

Mazo homeowners up for FEMA buyout still waiting, repairing after floods

Beaver Dam first responders stage active shooter training at Prairie View Elementary School

A couple gunshots rang through Prairie View Elementary School on Tuesday and soon after emergency workers dragged a limp body through the cafeteria. The body belonged to a volunteer actor and the guns used blanks as Beaver Dam police and fire personnel staged an active shooter training at the school.

Madison: 8-year-old girl calls 911 after uncle becomes unresponsive behind the wheel

Madison firefighters say an 8-year-old girl called 911 Monday night after her uncle became unresponsive behind the wheel. The car was headed westbound on the Interstate near the Beltline, according to Cynthia Schuster, a spokesperson for the Madison Fire Department. The little girl called 911 after her uncle swiped a guardrail and came to a stop on an off-ramp.

Lee Douglas enjoys new role as fire chief in Chippewa Falls

Lee Douglas has built a career as a firefighter and emergency service worker, joining the Chippewa Falls Fire Department a year after graduating from high school. He’s been promoted through the ranks, and now he’s eager for his biggest challenge yet — being the department’s fire chief. “I’m excited. We’ve got a lot of good things going on in our department,” he said.

'That could have been catastrophic': A sleeping family in Oconomowoc was saved after a passerby noticed a fire

A town of Oconomowoc family is safe, thanks to a passerby who spotted a fire before the family was aware of it. The passerby's report also greatly limited the amount of damage at the home, according to Western Lakes Fire District Chief Brad Bowen. "We found smoke and flames coming from the rear of the house," Bowen said.

Details of Viroqua Municipal Airport incident released

Officials responded to Viroqua Municipal Airport Monday after a phone call indicated an airplane crash that officials later found to be fatal. The name of aircraft operator is not being released at this time.
