Fire reported on second-floor balcony of Fond du Lac apartment building

Fond du Lac firefighters are trying to determine what started a fire on the second-floor balcony of an apartment building. Fire/rescue responded to an eight-unit apartment building at 691 E. Scott St. The fire on the balcony was threatening the structure. The apartment building's fire alarm was working.

Appleton park could be named for fallen firefighter, Mitch Lundgaard

The City of Appleton might name a park after a fallen firefighter. Driver-Engineer Mitch Lundgaard was shot and killed while on a medical call at the downtown transit center nearly one year ago. Mayor Jake Woodford says the park is on the northeast side, next to Fire Station No. 6. He believes it would be a fitting tribute, and having it next to the station only added to it.

Cash-strapped and volunteer-dependent, Wisconsin’s rural EMS providers scramble to keep responders safe

The reality of the COVID-19 pandemic struck Rob Puls on March 19, when Bayfield County confirmed its first positive case of the virus. Puls coordinates paramedics for Great Divide Ambulance, which staffs four ambulances around the clock in the 15,000-person county that hugs Lake Superior. The four vehicles cover around 730 square miles, an area three times the size of Chicago.

Woman injured, dog killed in house fire in Merrill

A woman was injured and a dog was killed in a house fire Sunday in Lincoln County. Authorities responded around 4:50 p.m. to a report of a kitchen fire in a home on County P in Merrill, according to the Pine River Fire Department. Officials said a Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputy arrived on scene first and tried to use a fire extinguisher on the fire, but he was driven out by heavy smoke.

Free app for dealing with COVID-19 coronavirus launches across Wisconsin

A free app designed like a Swiss Army knife for Wisconsinites coping with the coronavirus pandemic launched Monday. Developed during the past five weeks by the Center for Health Enhancement System Studies (CHESS) at UW-Madison, COVID-19 Wisconsin Connect is a desktop and mobile app that serves as a multipurpose tool for people struggling with various aspects of the pandemic.

Wildfire warnings issued for central Wisconsin

The state Department of Natural Resources and National Weather Service have issued a red flag warning for 12 central Wisconsin counties out of concern for brewing wildfire conditions. The warning includes Jackson, La Crosse, Trempealeau, Monroe, Juneau, Adams, Marquette, Waushara, Wood, Portage, Waupaca and Green Lake counties.

One person taken to hospital following apartment building fire in Sun Prairie

One person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation following a fire at a Sun Prairie apartment building. Firefighters responded to reports of smoke and an active fire alarm Thursday at an apartment along the 1000 block of O’Keefe Avenue. Crews found a fire inside one unit had been extinguished by a single fire sprinkler, according to a release by the Sun Prairie Fire Department.

Paratech Ambulance Services dedicate rigs to COVID-19 transports, up safety procedures

The COVID-19 pandemic is an untraveled road, even for those trained in emergencies. While getting potential coronavirus patients where they need to go, ambulance services are making changes. Paratech Ambulance, which covers the Milwaukee area through Madison to the Illinois border, has transported more than 700 possible COVID-19 patients, with 150 being confirmed, since early March.

Retired Sheboygan fire chief receives ladder truck visit to reunite with family

Apartment fire in Racine causes $150k in damage, no injuries reported

Person hit by train in La Crosse, taken to hospital

One person is taken to the hospital after firefighters say he or she was hit by a train. It happened just after 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 29 in the area of 27th and Farnam Street in La Crosse. The person's name and condition aren't being released. The La Crosse Fire Department says the incident is still under investigation.

Sun Prairie firefighters save 100 chickens after barn goes up in flames

First responders were able to save 100 chickens after the barn they were in went up in flames outside Sun Prairie Tuesday afternoon. The Sun Prairie Fire & Rescue said crews were dispatched after receiving a report of a "Bobcat on fire" in a large barn in the 3000 block of Vinburn Road in the town of Bristol.

Lisbon firefighter makes extension straps for front-line workers

When the coronavirus pandemic hit, Tony Sleck immediately drew on his "nerdy" side to fulfill his desire to help others. The Lisbon man has used a 3-D printer to create more than 800 surgical mask extension straps — free of charge. The straps attach to the elastic bands on surgical masks to make them more comfortable.

Fire destroys large shed in Hobart

Some trucks were damaged in an overnight shed fire in Hobart. At about midnight, Hobart firefighters were called to the 400 block of South County Line Rd. Crews arrived on scene to find a large shed in flames. Hose lines were set up to protect a propane tank and a nearby home. Two trucks were damaged in the fire There are no reports of injuries.

One person died Tuesday after a fire broke out at a house in Sheboygan. Firefighters responded around 2 p.m. Tuesday to a house in the 2300 block of South Ninth Street in Sheboygan, according to the Sheboygan Fire Department. A caller reported smoke was coming from the second-floor window of the home.

North Fond du Lac man accused of using stolen underwear to set fires

A North Fond du Lac man is accused of using stolen underwear to set several fires in the county. Michael L. Miller, 43, has been charged in Fond du Lac County with 27 counts--including arson and possession of child pornography. Details of the case were revealed in a criminal complaint obtained by Action 2 News.

Troy Gudie Appointed As The Interim Fire Chief For The City Of Onalaska

Onalaska’s fire department is in new hands for now. Troy Gudie was appointed Monday as the interim fire chief for the city of Onalaska. He’s stepping in for former chief Billy Hayes who abruptly resigned last week. Gudie was previously the assistant fire chief to Hayes. He says he would need to think more about taking the full time position.
