Barn fire in Hobart kills several cattle as 21 emergency agencies respond

A barn fire in Brown County killed several cattle Tuesday night as emergency crews responded from nearly two dozen agencies. Fire crews responded around 8:45 p.m. to the fire near Fernando Drive, according to the Hobart Fire Department. Officials said the dairy barn was being used to house young livestock.

Two units displaced, $100,000 in damages estimated from multi-unit residential building fire in Madison

The city of Madison Fire Department extinguished a fire at a multi-unit residential building Tuesday night on Ski Court in the town of Madison. According to a release, MFD was called to a fire around 10:42 p.m. after a neighbor noticed flames in the direction of the building and called 911. Engine 3 arrived first to the scene and saw a large fire climbing up the back corner of the two story building from a second story balcony toward the attic.

Bundled cardboard found on fire in Racine parking lot

The Racine Fire Department was dispatched just before Nov. 3 at 8 p.m. to 3801 S. Memorial Drive for a report of a fire at an industrial building, according to a RFD press release. Fire crews arrived to find stacks of bundled cardboard on fire in the parking lot. Firefighters from two engine companies and a truck company worked to separate the bundles of cardboard to get at the seat of the fire.

Beaver Dam voters approve fire department staffing referendum

Voters in the city of Beaver Dam approved a referendum to raise the tax levy and fund six new positions in the fire department on Tuesday. Voters approved of the referendum by 5,127 "yes" votes to 2,591 “no” votes, or 66.43 percent approval to 33.57 percent disapproval. The revenue from the referendum will cover six full-time firefighter/paramedic staff members in the department.

Fire damages home on Eau Claire's north side

A Tuesday morning fire caused about $85,000 damage to a residence on Eau Claire's north side. According to the Eau Claire Fire Department the fire was reported at 6:55 a.m. at 3120 Venus Ave. All of the residents were out of the house when firefighters arrived. Firefighters found flames coming from the second floor windows.

Car intentionally set on fire in Racine

Racine Fire Department Engine 6 was dispatched just before midnight Monday to a report of a parked vehicle on fire near the intersection of DeKoven and Kearney avenues, according to a press release from the Racine Fire Department. Engine 6 arrived to a 2008 Ford Explorer on fire with fire mainly in the rear cargo area.

Mauston approves fire service changes with neighboring towns starting in 2021

Mauston and the surrounding communities are changing the structure of fire service in the area, dissolving the association between the towns and instead entering into individual contracts for fire service. The Mauston Common Council approved the change during a meeting Oct. 27. The council approved a memorandum of understanding with the Townships Rural Fire Association and individual contracts with six municipalities.

Marsh fire being investigated as possible arson in Winnebago County

A marsh fire in Winnebago county is under investigation for possible arson. The fire was located on County Road MM, west of Winchester and east of Lake Poygan. The Fire Chief for the Town of Winchester Fire Departent, Glenn Mathison said, “It’s under investigation at this time… It’s possibly a suspicious fire.

Sussex's new fire chief brings years of experience

Kristopher Grod is prepared to lead the Sussex Fire Department toward meeting its goal of following industry best standards by 2023. The village's board of fire commissioners on Oct. 28 hired Grod as the new fire chief. He previously served as chief for the village of Kronenwetter — between Stevens Point and Wausau — since May 2019.

City of Madison Fire responds to first fire call in Town of Madison, storage items burn

The City of Madison Fire Department responded to the first fire call in the Town of Madison this morning when a fire broke out at Vinny’s Lockers on the 1300 block of Culmen Street around 6:30 a.m. The report said that upon arrival, the crew reported smoke showing from all sides of the structure. They entered the building and found items and debris on fire.

Madison fire crew swims to rescue person in sinking vehicle

Authorities say firefighters swam about 20 yards to a vehicle that was sinking into a Madison lake and rescued a person who was trapped in the back seat. The State Journal reports that the victim was unresponsive and did not have a pulse when pulled from the vehicle near the Warner Park Boat Launch on Saturday night.

Chief retires after 10 years with Milwaukee Fire Department, 37 total years of service

After 10 years of serving the Milwaukee Fire Department, Chief Mark Rohlfing is retiring. "The amazing thing is I’m not actually an emotional person," Rohlfing said. Milwaukee Fire Chief Mark Rohlfing is hanging up his fire hat. "We didn’t think we’d be here 10 years, but it went by very quickly," he said.

Fire damages 4-stall garage in Appleton

Appleton firefighters pulled two cars from a burning garage near downtown Friday afternoon. Firefighters were called for smoke coming from a four-stall garage on the 100-block of W. Atlantic St. shortly after 4 o’clock. While they were putting out the fire, crews found damaged and leaking propane tanks inside the garage.

Faulty wiring blamed for La Crosse house fire

La Crosse firefighters extinguished a fire in a house in the 1300 block of Charles Street Friday before the flames reached the attic. Firefighters reached the home in 3 minutes and saw light smoke wafting from the back of the two-story house, according to a fire department news release. Fire attack crews who entered the home found that a fire in the ceiling of the first-floor kitchen had reached the floor of the second story.

Study finds collaboration could benefit Jefferson County EMS services

An in-depth study of Emergency Medical Services capabilities and challenges in Jefferson County by the Wisconsin Policy Forum has found that greater collaboration among existing providers and potential involvement by county government could ease challenges and help in preparing for the future. The Wisconsin Policy Forum, a statewide, non-partisan, independent policy research organization analyzes issues affecting local governments and, in this situation, gives leaders options in developing plans for dealing with staffing shortages and growing demands affecting EMS units.

South Shore Fire Department Proposes Increasing Ambulance Fees

According to a report from The Journal Times, the South Shore (WI) Fire Department (SSFD) is pushing for an increase in resident and nonresident ambulance service fees for the second time in the past two years. The SSFD has 66 uniformed personnel that serve a 38-square-mile area of more than 33,500 residents in the villages of Sturtevant and Mount Pleasant.

Wisconsin's new COVID-19 cases surpass 5,000 in a day for the second time

For only the second time, the Dept. of Health Services recorded more than 5,000 new COVID-19 cases in a single day, according to the latest numbers provided by Secretary-designee Andrea Palm. During a Friday morning news conference, Palm revealed her agency has tallied 5,096 cases since Thursday afternoon’s report.

Baraboo District Ambulance Service agrees to move into fire department

The Baraboo District Ambulance Service Commission approved a five-year lease Wednesday between the service and the Baraboo Fire Department. EMS Chief Caleb Johnson said the shift will allow BDAS to reduce utility costs and provide more space for emergency responders. “We’re cramped, very tight for space in the Alma Waite building as it stands and in the administrative building, we’re obviously split from the operational staff by the road,” Johnson said.

Natural Resources Board Prohibits Use Of 'Forever Chemicals' In Firefighter Training

Under an emergency rule created Wednesday by the Wisconsin Natural Resources Board, fire departments will have to file a report any time they use firefighting foam that contains PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals.” The decision prohibits the use of those chemicals during training exercises. They can be used for emergency firefighting, fire prevention operations, and testing purposes as long as guidelines are followed.

Fire damages home in Fond du Lac

Fond du Lac firefighters battled a house fire Thursday morning. Crews responded to 594 E Bank Street for a report of smoke coming from the roof of a home. The department posted photos on social media that show a charred exterior and thick smoke. The department says the occupants escaped without harm.
