'It's very tragic': COVID-19 challenges Wauwatosa firefighters every day

Manitowoc fire: Firefighters battle blaze at Jagemann Plating

No one was hurt after a fire Monday morning at Jagemann Plating. Fire crews responded around 3:15 a.m. after a caller reported a fire in the barrel room, Manitowoc Fire Rescue Department said in a news release. Officials said firefighters saw smoke when they arrived and were told by staff everyone made it safely out of the building.

17 more dead from COVID-19 in Wisconsin; 90 more hospitalized

Seventeen deaths were added today to the total of those who have died due to COVID-19, according to the latest numbers from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. Deaths for each day are reported by DHS HERE. DHS also reported 90 people were newly-hospitalized. As of Saturday afternoon, 1,593 COVID-19 patients were being treated in Wisconsin hospitals, down 67 from the day prior.

Family thanks Baraboo Ambulance paramedics for life-saving work

Nicole Smithback felt her “entire world” stop when she received a call May 29 that her husband, Michael, was unresponsive and being flown via MedFlight to UW Hospital in Madison. That’s what she wrote in a message thanking Baraboo District Ambulance Service paramedics for their life-saving measures after a car accident that caused life threatening injuries for her husband.

Firefighters knock down accidental fire at Madison aluminum supplier

Madison firefighters responded to an accidental fire at an aluminum supplier building Friday morning. An incident report said crews were sent to the 100 block of South Fair Oaks Avenue for a report of a fire inside Madison Kipp Corporation at about 7:15 a.m. Madison Gas and Electric also responded. Staff quickly evacuated the building as crews arrived to the scene.

Oshkosh firefighters change a toy collection tradition

While they’re not going door-to-door this year because of the pandemic, Oshkosh firefighters are still collecting toys and cash donations to help out families in need. Their holiday collection effort kicked off Thursday night, with Santa leading the effort. Oshkosh firefighters set up in a parking lot just outside Station 15, and cars and trucks lined up to donate gifts.

Rock County adds 107 new cases of COVID-19 as Wisconsin nears 400K cases

Over 100 new COVID-19 cases and no additional virus-related deaths were reported in Rock County on Thursday, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS). Rock County added 107 new cases, bringing the countywide total to 9,660 cases and 90 deaths. A total of 58,681 negative tests have been reported and 7,606 county residents have recovered from the virus.

Ogema man dies after single-vehicle crash in Price County

An Ogema man died Thursday after a crash in Price County. Authorities responded to a single-vehicle crash around 6 p.m. on County YY, about a half mile east of Stucker Roade in the town of spirit, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol. Officials said a 2016 Chrysler 200 Limited was going south on County YY when it mishandled a curve, went into the south ditch and hit multiple trees.

Wisconsin governor orders flags at half staff for Ixonia EMT who died of COVID-19

Gov. Tony Evers signed Executive Order #96 ordering the flags of the United States and the state of Wisconsin to be flown at half-staff in honor of Cpt. Kelly Lynn Raether of the Town of Ixonia Fire & EMS. Raether passed away on Nov. 26, 2020 after contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty as she responded to the emergency medical needs of a COVID-19 patient.

La Crosse Fire Department battles blaze on Rose Steet

The La Crosse Fire Department was on the scene in just over three minutes after receiving the call of a garage fire at 309 Rose St. around 3:11 p.m. Wednesday. Crews saw heavy smoke and fire coming from inside the garage and extinguished the fire in about an hour and a half. The garage had significant fire and heavy smoke damage, according to the La Crosse Fire Department.

As deaths from COVID-19 in Wisconsin mount, new cases continue to decline

Wisconsin has reported nearly 500 deaths from COVID-19 in just the last 11 days. On Nov. 21, the state's coronavirus death toll passed 3,000. On Wednesday, it passed 3,500. The state Department of Health Services on Wednesday reported 3,777 new cases and 82 deaths, bringing the death toll to 3,502.

Clayton fire chief hospitalized with COVID-19, community comes together to help the family

A western Wisconsin community is rallying around its fire chief, who has been hospitalized with COVID-19 for 24 days. Fire Chief Don Kittelson is a third-generation firefighter who has served the Clayton Fire Department for 34 years. The small, rural village is about an hour northeast of the Twin Cities.

Two people killed, one injured in crash in Somers

Two people were killed and a third person injured following a two-car crash in the 3500 block of Green Bay Road (Highway 31) Tuesday afternoon. The crash occurred at 3:42 p.m. in the southbound lane of Green Bay Road, according to Lt. Steven Beranis of the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department. Minutes later, Somers Fire and Rescue personnel responded and transported two people to local hospitals, both of whom later died.

Madison Fire Department brings heavy-duty tiller aerial ladder in service

Madison Fire Department brings back old technology with a tractor-drawn aerial ladder truck to meet modern needs. According to a release, a 107-food heavy-duty tiller aerial ladder from Pierce Manufacturing is serving Fire Station 1. The tiller is though to be the fourth tiller in the history of the Madison Fire Department.

Multiple departments respond to marsh fire near Tichigan Lake

Multiple fire departments responded to a large brush fire near Tichigan Lake Tuesday afternoon. Smoke could be seen from Highway 83, more than a mile away. A Mutual Aid Box Alarm System alert was reportedly called, bringing in aid from Waukesha and Kenosha counties, as well as from eastern Racine County, to help fight the blaze near the intersection of Bridge Drive and Marsh Road, which is north of the Tichigan Wildlife Area and northwest of Tichigan Lake.

Greater Beloit Shop With A Hero events look different this year due to COVID-19

The 20th annual Greater Beloit Shop With A Hero event has been cancelled this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, according to Town of Beloit Police Chief Ron Northrop. “The committee decided to cancel it this year, but we are looking at all options going forward,” Northrop said. For nearly two decades, City of Beloit and Town of Beloit first responders, both police and fire staff, have come together for a day of Christmas shopping for families in need.

Chippewa Falls structure fire causes damage, no injuries

A structure fire early Monday morning in the city caused about $10,000 in damage but no injuries. According to a news release from the Chippewa Falls Fire Department: Firefighters and the EMS Department responded to the blaze at 210 E. Willow St. at about 1:40 a.m. They found smoke and flames coming from the attic area and all occupants evacuated.

Crews put out large dumpster fire inside Fond du Lac loading dock

PHOTO: Fond du Lac firefighters responded to a dumpster fire inside a building on Monday, Nov. 30. Crews were dispatched to Milk Specialties near Hickory Street and Tompkins around 1:14 p.m. Upon arrival, first responders discovered that the dumpster was located inside the building and eventually pulled it outside where the fire was extinguished.

New Berlin names Mark Polzin as fire chief

The New Berlin mayor and Police and Fire Commission are announcing the appointment of Mark Polzin as fire chief. According to a press release, Polzin comes to New Berlin after working in the Racine Fire Department for 26 years. He most recently held the position of Division Chief of Fire Prevention.

Fatal fire in Appleton under investigation

Investigators are looking for the cause of a weekend fire that killed a man in Appleton. Officials say the man’s house was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived Saturday. A next-door neighbor spotted the flames and called 911. Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control in about 30 minutes and found the victim once the fire was extinguished.
