Sauk Prairie area first responders aid neighbors during flooding

Although no reports of flooding were reported in the Sauk Prairie area Aug. 19-20, neighboring communities like Black Earth, Mazomanie and Cross Plains – where an unofficial reading from a rain gauge reported 15.33 inches in a 24-hour period – kept the Sauk City and Prairie du Sac fire departments busy.

South Shore EMS station bids come in over budget

The bids to build the north side ambulance station in Mount Pleasant are in and the results are not what was anticipated. The village budgeted $500,000 to build the EMS (emergency medical services) station proposed just south of the intersection of Spring Street and Emmertsen Road, and officials were hoping to begin construction later this year.

Survive Alive House educates Fond du Lac area children on fire safety

VIDEO: A donation made to a local fire department will help educate children on fire safety. The Francis & Ruth Oberreich Foundation purchased an inflatable Survive Alive House for Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue. The inflatable offers a realistic experience of a house fire. During demonstrations Tuesday, firefighters offered fifth graders fire safety tips while helping them navigate through the smoky home.

Marathon Fire Department remembers 9/11 victims with silent march

Garage destroyed, structures damaged after fire breaks out in Fond du Lac

A garage was destroyed and several more structures were damaged following a fire on Tuesday evening. Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue crews were called to a home on Ruggles Street shortly after 6 p.m. for a report of a detached garage fire. Upon arrival fire crews reported smoke and fire showing from the exterior of the garage and fire beginning to burn the single family dwelling nearby.

Machine contributing to Janesville's impressive cardiac arrest survival rate

According to numbers from public health and the American Heart Association, the cardiac arrest survival rate in Janesville is 45 percent compared to the nation's average 10 percent.

Due to staff shortage, there was only one Hales Corners firefighter on duty on Labor Day

The village had just one firefighter/emergency medical technician on duty to cover the entire community on Labor Day. It reflects a staffing problem that has been long in the making. Staffing is such a problem that some shifts were covered by only two firefighters in July, Fire Chief Martin Freibergs reported to the fire and police commission.

Firefighter treated for exertion after garage fire spreads to Appleton apartment

PHOTO: The Appleton Fire department was called to a early Tuesday morning garage fire that was attached to a three-unit apartment. Officials say the fire spread to the attic and second floor causing heavy damage. Only two-units were occupied when the fire broke out. Four adults and six children are without a home since the apartment is no longer inhabitable.

West Bend man charged with attacking off-duty West Allis firefighter

VIDEO: A West Bend man is charged with attacking an off-duty firefighter. Robert Patrick Ryan, 32, is accused of striking the victim in the back of the head, who was in the middle of trying to save a woman's life. West Allis firefighter and EMT Chad Staszak explained he was at a music festival with family last month when he saw a woman collapse.

Madison paramedics deliver two babies in two days

Four paramedics and eight EMTs earned their stork pins last week as they helped deliver two newborn babies within two days. According to a release, a mother-to-be pulled over her minivan on the side of the road Thursday night when her baby was on the way and she couldn't make it to the hospital. Officials said Medic 3 and Engine Company 5 were sent to the intersection of East Washington Avenue and Highway 30.

Stevens Point Man Faces Five Arson Related Felonies

A Stevens Point man is facing five felony charges for committing arson in late August. Gary McDonald, 61, is charged with two counts of attempted intentional homicide, two counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety, and one count of arson without the owners' consent. McDonald started the fires at a home he foreclosed on in the 2500 block of Simoins Street.

Milwaukee Fire Department chief: Aldermen will be notified when placards go up on abandoned buildings

VIDEO: Officials with the Milwaukee Fire Department on Monday, Sept. 10 explained the controversial vacant structure placarding program to Milwaukee Common Council members after some aldermen expressed concerns. Tomahawk honors fallen first responders of 9/11

Tuesday will mark the 17th anniversary of 9/11. On Sunday, a group in Tomahawk gathered to recognize that anniversary. The event held in Lincoln County's Veteran Memorial Park honored the first responders who lost their lives. "It's a difficult time when you have an event such as this when emergency service people do what they do every day," said Nokomis Fire Department Chief Don Richert.

Firefighters extinguish two-car vehicle fire in Belleville early Sunday morning

‘It’s just a mess:’ House fire that spread to 2 other Milwaukee homes near 40th and Garfield investigated as arson

Toddler rescued by firefighters in Menasha

A fire captain and firefighter made the rescue of an 18-month-old boy from a fire at an apartment building Thursday afternoon east of Menasha's downtown. The condition of the boy, who was not breathing when he was pulled from the building, was not released as of Friday morning. But Assistant Chief Vernon Green of Neenah-Menasha Fire Rescue said more details are expected later on Friday.

La Crosse firefighters 'Fill the Boot' for the Muscular Dystrophy Association

Many organizations have iconic containers for monetary donations — the Salvation Army has its Red Kettle, Unicef its Trick-or-Treat for change boxes. But the Muscular Dystrophy Association takes a unique approach to fundraising, collecting dimes and dollars in sturdy rubber boots. On Thursday afternoon, 16 members of the La Crosse Area Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 127 took turns holding out their boots to passerby, collecting donations on behalf of the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
