Update: No SAFER grant for Caledonia Fire Department

The Village Board on Tuesday denied a request from the Caledonia Fire Department to apply for a grant that potentially could have helped fund the addition of six firefighters to its staff. Instead of authorizing the department’s application for a federal Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response — or SAFER — grant, the village trustees agreed to create an ad hoc committee to look into various options for financing and staffing at the department.

Fire at Janesville home displaces 5 people, causes $25,000 in damage

A fire at a Janesville home has displaced five people and left $25,000 worth of damage, according to a news release from the Janesville Fire Department. Firefighters responded to a single-story, single-family home at 3206 Canterbury Lane for a report of a residential fire just after 8:45 p.m. Monday.

Fire extinguished at K&S Fuel Injection in Weston

Firefighters have extinguished a fire at K&S Fuel Injection in Weston. The call for the fire came in just before 9 p.m. Monday night. According to the South Area Fire and Emergency Response District, the fire was out within 20 minutes of them arriving at the scene. There's extensive damage to a corner of the building where construction was being done.

White Lake Volunteer Fire Department roof collapses

On Sunday around 8:30 a.m. the roof of the White Lake Volunteer Fire Department in Langlade County collapsed causing emergency response vehicles to be caught underneath the debris. No one was inside the building at the time of the collapse. “It was kind of shocking at first, you think it's never going to happen to your department but it does," stated Allan Holbrook, assistant chief with the White Lake Fire Department.

Caledonia Fire officials say more firefighters are needed, but it’ll be costly

The village has some decisions to make. Leaders of the Caledonia Fire Department believe 18 more firefighters need to be hired, but the cost of that would be in the millions and is more of a long-term goal. For starters, Fire Chief Richard Roeder and Battalion Chief Jeff Henningfeld want to add six new firefighters.

'It's OK if you need help': Superior firefighters focus on mental health

Superior firefighters know what it's like to lose one of their own. Battalion Chief Erik Sutton died by suicide in April 2018, a few weeks after retiring. 12 people displaced after apartment fire in the Town of Madison

Representatives with the Red Cross are assisting 12 people, including nine children, displaced after a fire Sunday afternoon. Firefighters responded around 4:15 p.m. to a fire inside the Parker Place Apartments on the 2000 block of Parker Place in the Town of Madison. Residents who were home at the time of the fire escaped without injuries, officials said.

Verona: Farm Safety Day trains first responders on how to handle farm rescues

Stateline Farm Rescue trained area first responders on how to safely execute farm rescues at Doerfer Farms on Saturday. Approximately 60 first responders from 10 area fire departments participated in the hands-on training that focused on grain bin extractions and auger entanglement, two common farming incidents.

Sauk City Fire receives grant to help with water rescues following summer flooding

The Sauk City Fire Department has received grant money to purchase 10 new warm-weather water rescue suits. Assistant Chief Mike Breunig says the suits are necessary to make water rescues safely. "It's just about knowing, no matter what I'm wearing, I'm protected from the water," he said. "That I have the right gear to do my job and not have to worry about not having the right gear when I'm out in the water.

Madison firefighters prove to be fastest at 2019 American Lung Association Fight For Air Climb

The Madison Fire Department took home the medals for fastest female firefighters at the 2019 American Lung Association Fight For Air Climb Saturday afternoon. Firefighters had to climb the 47 floors, 1,034 steps, to the top of the US Bank Center in Milwaukee to raise awareness and funds for the American Lung Association.

Gov. Tony Evers proposes $6.7M for Parkside fire alarm upgrades, Ellsworth plans defered

Gov. Tony Evers is proposing spending spending more than $1 billion of his $2.5 billion proposed capital budget on upgrades for different schools within the UW-System. For the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, Evers is proposing spending $6.7 million for a campuswide upgrade of the fire alarm system.

Manitowoc garage severely damaged in fire

A residential garage in Manitowoc suffered significant damage Thursday afternoon after a fire broke out inside of it. Fire crews were dispatched about 4 p.m. to 732 S. 22nd St. for a report of smoke coming from a two car unattached garage, a press release from Manitowoc Fire and Rescue said. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the roof and closed overhead door of the structure, the release said.

Dangerous carbon monoxide levels send Milwaukee family of 4 to hospital

Deadly levels of carbon monoxide (CO) sent a family of four to the hospital. It happened on Milwaukee's northwest side. "They were having symptoms of headaches and a bit disoriented," said Battalion Chief James Hardy, with the Milwaukee Fire Department. A carbon monoxide leak brought firefighters out on a cold day to a home just north of 79th and Hampton.

Two months after their captain's death, Lake Mills fire department keeps memory alive

A man accused of killing a Lake Mills firefighter was officially charged in Dane County Court Thursday. Originally, Cremers was arrested on a tentative charge of homicide by drunken driving. He blew a .079 during a breathalyzer test, which is below Wisconsin’s legal limit to drive. Cremers is now charged with knowingly operating a vehicle with a suspended license.

No OWI charges for driver who killed Lake Mills firefighter

The man accused of hitting and killing an off-duty firefighter during a New Year's Eve crash will not be charged with drunk driving. Court records filed Wednesday show that Samuel Cremers will instead be charged with knowingly operating a vehicle while his license was suspended causing death. Cremers allegedly caused the crash that killed Lake Mills Fire Captain Chris Truman after Truman had pulled over to help a stranded motorist along the Beltline.

'Boots vs. Badges': The good guys go head-to-head with the good guys on the court in Oshkosh

In Oshkosh, it was the good guys vs. the good guys Wednesday afternoon. The Oshkosh Fire Department, and the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office faced-off in the Boots vs. Badges charity basketball game. But for some, being on the court was foreign to them. “I know nothing about basketball!” said Winnebago County Sheriff John Matz who was also the Badges’ head coach for the game Wednesday.

Janesville company develops glycol-free training smoke

Fire departments train almost every day. “We want the visibility to be what we think we’re going to go into when we go into an actual fire,” said Janesville Deputy Fire Chief James Ponkauskas. “That’s what we’re looking for when we’re training.” While cancer prevention has come to the forefront for many departments battling real fires, Ponkauskas says only recently has the Janesville Fire Department looked at the dangers they face while training.

Pine River firefighters lose everything after firehouse burns down

Firefighters in far northern Wisconsin are living their worst nightmare after their own firehouse burned down Tuesday night. According to a Facebook post from the Pine River Fire Department, firefighters of the La Pointe, Wisconsin Fire Department in Madeline Island lost their firehouse. Initial reports suggest the building and everything inside was destroyed including firetrucks and firefighting equipment.
