Kenosha unrest, arson: 4 indicted for 2020 crimes

A federal grand jury has indicted four men, in two separate cases, for various offenses committed during the unrest in Kenosha in August 2020, a U.S. Department of Justice news release indicted Tuesday, July 13. In the first case, Allen King, David Garner and Kevin Martinez are charged with conspiring to steal controlled substances and transport stolen goods in interstate commerce.

Kansasville Fire, always in need of new volunteers, looks to get kids interested in firefighting

Kids put on firefighter hats, climbed into first responder vehicles and even saw a helicopter touch down Sunday morning in Kansasville. The Kansasville Fire and Rescue Department held its annual Pancake Breakfast and Safety Day again at its station, 23730 Durand Avenue, after last year’s event was canceled due to the pandemic.

Camp Hero in Milwaukee helps Girl Scouts learn the skills to be firefighters

Training at the Milwaukee Fire Academy isn't just for men. More and more young women are climbing the ladder of success. They're learning first responder skills thanks to Camp Hero. 19-year-old Elizabeth Canadas says, "This camp lets girls see that they have the ability to do these first responder careers.

Milwaukee man sentenced to life in prison for Waukesha murder, arson

Amani Smith was sentenced to life in prison Monday, July 12, in Waukesha. The 22-year-old was convicted a few weeks ago in the murder of Dennis Huelse. Huelse was killed in 2019. Investigators found a knife in his neck. Amani Smith was also convicted of setting fire to Huelse's house and stealing his 1969 Pontiac Firebird.

Apartment fire extinguished on Milwaukee's north side, man taken to hospital

Firefighters on Monday morning, July 12 responded to the scene of an apartment fire near 38th and Good Hope Road in Milwaukee. The call came in around 4:50 a.m. The fire started on the second floor and was contained quickly. One man was injured and taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. He is in serious condition.

Kimberly woman dead, four others injured, after crash in Manitowoc County

A Kimberly woman was killed, and four other people were injured in a crash Saturday in Manitowoc County. Deputies responded around 4 p.m. to a two-vehicle crash at Highway 42 and County VV in the town of Two Rivers, according to the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff’s office officials said Kristen VandeVoort, 31, of Kimberly was driving a 2010 Chevy Impala east on County VV when the vehicle didn’t stop at a stop sign at the intersection and was hit by a 2019 Dodge Ram going south that was driven by George Dearborn, 71, of Appleton.

4 displaced following Forest Junction house fire

Officials say four people, including two children, have been displaced following an overnight house fire in Forest Junction. According to Fire Chief Carl Weber, crews were called to N8811 Church Street at 3 a.m. for a report of a fully involved house fire. When they arrived, they found flames coming out of the home and through the roof.

La Crosse Fire Department to run Holmen Area Fire Department for $14,583 a month in new pact

The La Crosse Fire Department will assume administration of the Holmen Area Fire Department for a year under a resolution the La Crosse Common Council approved Thursday night. Council members Mark Neumann and Doug Happel characterized the approval, at a cost of $14,583.33 a month to the Holmen district, as one of the most important actions the council took Thursday, if not stretching back further.

Arrests, fire after Milwaukee crash near 40th and North

Two people were injured and arrested after a crash near 40th and North Thursday evening, July 8 involving a vehicle that was fleeing police. According to police, the fleeing vehicle crashed into a house just before 6 p.m. after striking a parked vehicle. There were people inside the house but none were hurt.

One dead, one injured in Oconto County house fire

Firefighters responding to a house fire in the Town of Lakewood Thursday morning found a burn victim outside the home and a man dead inside. The Oconto County Sheriff’s Office says the fire was reported on Big Bear Lane at 6:33 A.M. The house was engulfed when firefighters arrived. As they fought to put out the fire, firefighters rescued a 74-year-old woman who had suffered burns and found a 78-year-old man inside.

Update: Ashland fatal house fire victims identified

The three people who died in a house fire in northern Wisconsin have been identified as a mother and her two teenage daughters. According to police, 36-year-old Jordan Chowning, 14-year-old Alyssa Chowning and 17-year-old Michelle Hathaway died Monday when fire swept through their home in Ashland. One adult and two other children escaped the fire and a third adult who was away at the time returned to find the house ablaze.

Witness turns rescuer as cars collide, catch fire on interstate near Janesville

Among those of a maze of motorists suddenly stopping on I-39/90 Tuesday as a chain reaction crash unfolded was Janesville's Paul Matchett. "And then we could see the plume of smoke starting to rise," Matchett said. Matchett's photos from the scene of the roadway chaos near Janesville show incredible damage, with crashed, burned vehicles strewn across lanes.

Superior Fire Department Trains on Old Manning Motel

The Superior Fire Department had its turn to practice on the old Manning Motel today after the Superior and Douglas County SWAT teams used it yesterday. The crews began the first of three days training, as new and former firefighters practiced rescue scenarios. Firefighters were eager to have a flat roof to train on, which they don’t encounter often.

Madison home, RV sustain serious damage in fire

A residential and RV fire on Madison’s north side caused more than $200,000 in damage early Wednesday morning. Fire officials said crews were dispatched to the 1100 block of Shasta Drive around 12:20 a.m. for a report of a structure and RV fire. Neighbors called 911 after noticing an “orange glow” outside of their home.

Madison Fire Dept. says spontaneous combustion of rags to blame for garage fire

Investigators with the Madison Fire Department say rags and painting materials that weren’t thrown away correctly are to blame for a garage fire on the city’s far east side Wednesday. The fire department was called to Alton Drive near the Highway 30/I-90/94 interchange just after 1:30 p.m. Wednesday after a homeowner returned home to find alarms sounding and smoke coming from the front door.

Racine man fighting for his life after falling 35 feet while volunteering at Camp Anokijig

Steve Leger gives all his energy to his family, friends and community. From volunteering as an assistant Boy Scouts leader for 15 years, to working as a firefighter-paramedic for nearly 30 years, Leger was born to take care of others. “My dad is one of the most giving persons I’ve met, with his time, his money and his love and support,” said 21-year-old Zach Leger, one of Steve’s sons.

New fire chief selected in Beaver Dam

Beaver Dam has a new fire chief. Without discussion, the city’s police and fire commission unanimously voted to approve Michael Wesle as the new fire chief for the city fire and rescue department. Wesle was previously a lieutenant with the Rhinelander Fire Department after many years of experience. He replaces Alan Mannel, who retired in April.

Milwaukee south side crash; driver sought, 3 injured

The Milwaukee Police Department is investigating a fiery crash that occurred early Monday, July 5 near Cesar Chavez Drive and Washington Street around 12:50 a.m. One driver rear-ended another, and the impact caused the striking car to then hit a pole. The driver of the other car, a 49-year-old woman, and passengers of that car, a 77-year-old woman and a 7-year-old boy, sustained non-life-threatening injuries; all transported to a hospital for treatment.
