Salem Lakes, Bristol and Somers fire departments rely on federal grants

Firefighting equipment is expensive and can eat up most of a small department’s budget, fire chiefs throughout the county report. As a result, departments look for federal grants, like ones available through FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program, to help offset costs. “These grants help us purchase needed equipment without taking away funding for operations,” Salem Lakes Fire Chief Mike Slover said.

Veteran Portage firefighter sworn in as PFD's full-time engineer

An experienced firefighter was sworn in Monday as the Portage Fire Department’s new engineer. In the Common Council chambers of the Portage Municipal Building, in front of an audience of firefighters, law enforcement, family and city officials, Fire Chief Clayton Simonson Jr. introduced Capt. Matthew Asch, 40, as the department’s new engineer.

Madison fire crew rescues stranded dog with badly broken leg

A Madison fire crew helped a dog that was badly injured in a fall from a rooftop Saturday, officials said. The Madison Fire Department said a passerby reported hearing the cries and whimpers of a dog trapped on the roof of a house in the 100 block of North Butler Street at 5:23 p.m. When firefighters arrived four minutes later, the dog had already jumped or fallen off the roof and had badly broken its leg, according to the report.

Woman in custody after 1-year-old girl dies following Milwaukee house fire near 28th and Meinecke

A 31-year-old woman has been taken into custody on preliminary charges of child neglect after a 1-year-old girl died following a house fire on Milwaukee's north side Saturday, Feb. 10. Family members told FOX6 News Quamyiia Owens just celebrated her first birthday in December. She was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries after the fire, and sadly, she did not survive.

Man dies after Saturday house fire in Madison

Child with lighter reportedly starts Racine house fire

A child playing with a lighter in a bedroom reportedly caused a house fire with an estimated loss of $20,000. According to a press release from the City of Racine Fire Department, firefighters and the Racine police were dispatched to the 1000 block of Mayfair Drive at 12:12 a.m. on Saturday to find smoke coming from the upstairs window of a unit in a duplex.

Fitchburg firefighter injured in early Saturday morning house fire, officials say

La Crosse second-grader honored for role in saving grandma's life

Nobody injured in Downtown Madison apartment fire, officials say

A fire caused by a package of cookies on top of a stove forced the evacuation of a Downtown apartment building Wednesday morning. Nobody was hurt in the incident. The fire was reported at about 6:40 a.m. at the Highlander Apartments, 121 W. Gilman St., the Madison Fire Department said. Crews respond to structure fire in Sun Prairie

Mahlon Mitchell says Wisconsin firefighters union has made changes based on critical 2015 audit

The state firefighters' union has made recommended changes since a 2015 U.S. Department of Labor audit found it did not adequately document expenses including hotels, meals and reimbursements for its leaders, its president said Tuesday. Oshkosh fire chief announces retirement
