Somers Fire and Rescue appoints Andersen as new deputy fire chief

Ben Andersen on Tuesday was appointed deputy fire chief for the Somers Fire and Rescue Department, effective Aug. 1, and is poised to take over for Chief Carson Wilkinson when Wilkinson retires this fall, pending the village Fire Commission’s approval in September. Wilkinson, who has served as fire chief for Somers for over five years, will work closely with Andersen for the next few months through the on-boarding process.

Authorities investigating cause of fire in Freedom

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of a fire in the Town of Freedom Wednesday morning. According to the Freedom Fire Department, crews were called to a house fire on the N2500 block of Maloney Road in the Town of Freedom at about 9 a.m. The home’s location is west of Wrightstown and north of Highway 41.

House explosion in Milwaukee

A house explosion and fire near Keefe and Teutonia in Milwaukee sent one person to the hospital Wednesday, July 21. Milwaukee police said a 28-year-old man was seriously hurt. The cause is under investigation but police said it may have been a result of fireworks. Neighbors said it was extremely loud.

La Crosse Fire Department honors fallen firefighter on newest fire truck

The La Crosse Fire Department is honoring a fallen firefighter through a new addition to its fleet. Engineer James McCormick passed away in November 1957 after experiencing chest pains at the scene of a fire. McCormick’s name is now etched on the department’s newest fire truck. To avoid any future health complications while on the job, the department is working to implement national physical standards.

In midst of dedication at La Crosse fire station, crash is heard, as truck rolls over a block away

AUDIO: It may have been the fastest response time to an accident in the history of La Crosse. And most covered. A truck flipped onto its side just outside the VFW Hall in La Crosse at 6th and Market, shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday. It just so happened that, a block away, firefighters and police were already basically on the scene, as they were gathered to watch the dedication of a new firetruck, while the media reported.

Fire causes about $25K damage to Eau Claire home

A fire caused an estimated $25,000 damage, but no injuries, Tuesday at a city residence. According to a news release from the Eau Claire Fire Department: Firefighters responded at about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday to 661 Wisconsin St. Upon arrival, the crews found a working fire on the second floor of the two-story structure.

Madison firefighters share electrical safety tips after responding to report of smoke in eastside residence

Madison fire crews were able to educate some residents about proper electrical safety protocols when they responded to an east side home Sunday morning for a report of smoke in the basement. When crews arrived to the residence in the 1800 block of Helena Street shortly before 2 a.m. they didn’t find any signs of smoke or fire, but they did discover an odor of burned plastic and a light haze of smoke in the basement.

Longtime Manitowoc paramedic needs help to pay medical bills after serious illness

The year 2020 and the coronavirus pandemic were challenging for just about everyone. But for one local paramedic, it was an especially difficult period. For more than four decades, Lori Krueger was devoted to helping others as a paramedic and emergency medical technician. And for nearly 17 years, she aided people in crisis as a 911 dispatcher.

Nine area fire departments respond to fire in Durand

Multiple fire crews spent seven hours Saturday trying to put out a fire on L. Poeschel Road in Durand. When firefighters arrived around 11 a.m., two of three connected pole sheds were on fire. One of them was already burned to the ground. They were able to save one of the sheds and half of another one.

No injuries reported in Racine house fire

Crews were called to a house fire on Deane Boulevard in Racine shortly after midnight Sunday for a report of flames coming from a backyard. Upon arrival, crews found visible smoke and flames coming from an upstairs bedroom. Firefighters made the initial attack from the rear of the house and battled the stubborn blaze until it was extinguished.

Three Rescued From Oshkosh House Fire

Three people and three pets were rescued from their burning home Saturday morning in Oshkosh. At about 7:39 a.m., the Oshkosh Fire Department was called to a house fire at 1627 Western Street. The woman who called said she and her two children, along with two dogs and a cat were trapped upstairs by smoke.

Cooking 'mishap' sparks Sun Prairie fire, displacing family of 5

A kitchen fire Thursday displaced a family of five and caused thousands of dollars in damage to a Sun Prairie duplex, authorities said. Family members were cooking in their duplex in the 2000 block of Wisconsin Avenue when a "mishap" lead to the fire, Sun Prairie Fire Chief Christopher Garrison said.

Wisconsin Fire Crews Sent to Northern Minnesota to Help Fight Wildfires

Fire crews from Wisconsin are working on a couple fires burning in northern Minnesota. Dry conditions have led to a couple of small wildfires near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. They started popping up after a lightning storm moved through the area. Two of the fires are about 20 acres and are under control.

Green Bay Metro Fire forced to 'make adjustments' with Mason Street Bridge stuck upright

The Mason Street Bridge will likely remain in the upright position until the end of July. The Department of Transportation says there's a mechanical failure that needs to be fixed. Doing so could cost nearly $500,000, and the small spaces workers are dealing with are causing longer construction times.

Waukesha police, fire departments seek funds for City Hall memorial

Kiel house fire believed to be caused by lightning

A family is safe after their home caught fire in Kiel Wednesday night during a storm. The Kiel Fire Department was called to the 600 block of 10th Street for reports of smoke and flames. Firefighters were able to contain the flames within ten minutes after arriving on scene. The residents were home at the time of the fire, and were able to evacuate safely.

Extension cord causes brief electrical fire in Madison home

An extension cord sparked a brief electrical fire inside a Madison residence Tuesday afternoon. Officials were sent to a home on the 1800 block of South Thompson Drive at around 2:15 p.m. According to an incident report, a resident said an electrical outlet in their house “began to arc, caught fire and then self-extinguished.

Onalaska Firefighters push rig into its new home, bringing back a station tradition

Driver killed in Platteville following crash between car, semi

One person is dead following a crash in Grant County on Tuesday morning. Officers responded to the intersection of Business Highway 151 and Commercial Drive at around 10:15 a.m. for a report of an accident involving a semi truck and car. A Facebook post from Platteville police said the driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering significant injuries in the crash.
